According to The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a January move for Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, and it would be the ultimate blow to the frozen-out Kyle Walker-Peters.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Daily Mail report that Spurs want to strengthen in that particular position in the New Year, and it isn’t too surprising given Walker-Peters, Moussa Sissoko, Davinson Sanchez and Serge Aurier have all played there this season, with varying degrees of success.

The latter in particular has struggled from a defensive point of view, and was quite frankly shocking during the 7-2 humiliation against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, picking up a 2/10 rating from Football London.

Now it appears as though Mauricio Pochettino wants a proper replacement for Kieran Trippier following his summer exit, which seemingly means Aurier and Walker-Peters aren’t considered up to the task.

Meanwhile, Aarons has started seven of Norwich’s top flight games in 2019/20, missing the other two through injury.

Fall of KWP

When the 22-year-old started Tottenham’s first three Premier League matches of the season, it seemed as though it was finally going to be his time to shine in the first team.

However, injury hit in the third of those appearances against Newcastle United, and he has only played once since – in the EFL Cup loss against League Two Colchester United.

To show just how far he has fallen down the pecking order, he hasn’t even been named in the matchday squad for their previous six Premier League fixtures as well as two in the Champions League, as he has ultimately become completely frozen out.

The fact that someone as error-prone as Aurier being in front of him is bad enough, but if Pochettino brings in a 19-year-old it would surely deal the ultimate blow to him, and potentially bring his Tottenham career to an end.

Kyle Bartley has only actually had three permanent clubs during his career, but the defender has certainly been around in the sense that he has had six different loan spells since becoming a professional footballer at Arsenal.

The Englishman impressed on loan at Leeds United during the 2016/17 season – making 50 appearances in all competitions – before completing a permanent move to West Brom in the summer of 2018.

Last term, Bartley made 34 appearances for the Baggies, whilst he has been a key player for the club this season – playing the full 90 minutes in each of West Brom’s 14 Championship matches.

Everton have struggled defensively this season and sit in 16th, just two points off the relegation zone. Marco Silva’s men have let in 16 goals in just 10 games so far, making them the joint third-worst defensive side in the Premier League.

Right-back is far from a problem position for the club with both Seamus Coleman and Djibril Sidibe available to Silva, but he will surely be keeping a close eye on Jonjoe Kenny’s time at Schalke with the prospect of a 2020 breakthrough in his mind.

The Liverpudlian burst onto the scene under Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce in 2017-18, making 19 Premier League appearances that season and providing two assists. Two seasons on, Kenny is showing his brilliance in the Bundesliga.

Schalke manager David Wagner is a huge fan of his and told The Independent (via Bundesliga.com): “I can tell you what, he’s already close to becoming a fan favourite here in our stadium. He’s done an amazing job so far and scored a wonderful goal against [Hertha] Berlin. He’s, for sure, one of the best signings which we have made this summer.”

Not only has Kenny received praise from his manager, he has also won the Rookie of the Month for August in the Bundesliga and was again nominated for the award in September.

It is no surprise to see the 22-year-old earning such praise when he has started all nine Bundesliga games, registering a goal and two assists along the way.

Watching Kenny perform so well will give Everton fans hope for the future, as Coleman is now 31 and may not have long left at Goodison Park. Also, Sidibe is only on loan from Monaco, which means the right-back slot could be his for the taking next season if the Toffees decide against making his deal permanent.

This story is yet another example of a British talent flourishing abroad and it’s a trend that suggests managers should trust these players and used them more often.

Kenny may have to wait until next campaign to fully make his mark on Merseyside, but his early success in Germany suggests he could be ready to succeed Coleman in 2020.

Granit Xhaka could leave Arsenal in January, and according to The Times Newcastle are interested in taking him off their hands.

What’s the word?

Xhaka’s unhappiness at the Gunners is now no secret thanks to his extraordinary outburst in the home match against Crystal Palace a few weeks ago, where his display to the fans was rather unfriendly.

His antics have cost him his captaincy, and he has subsequently missed the two matches since, with a possibility that he could remain sidelined for the foreseeable future.

The Times suggest that if that was to happen, he would request a January move – and Newcastle could be his destination, with Steve Bruce thought to be a big admirer of the Switzerland captain.

However, due to his £100,000-a-week salary a permanent departure may be out of the question, but since the Magpies would be able to offer him Premier League football and perhaps a key role in the team, the 27-year-old could be open to a short-term switch, with Euro 2020 not far away.

Worth the risk?

Much of the hostility that exists between Xhaka, who cost £35m im 2016, and the Arsenal faithful has come about due to their belief that the midfielder has underperformed.

That, along with his poor attitude, could be of concern to Newcastle, particularly as they will probably have to spend a lot of money on his wages.

Also, the Magpies are not in urgent need of a midfield addition, with the Longstaff brothers along with Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden all capable of fulfilling a first-team role.

However, none of them can match Xhaka’s 87% pass accuracy or 61 average passes per game, and in new surroundings away from all the vitriol at the Emirates he could begin to find his best form once more.

After all, he is the skipper of a national team, and will be determined to impress after the recent fall-out, as his place in the European Championships could come under threat.

As a result, he would probably be a useful addition to the Newcastle squad, and if on a short-term basis it could be hugely beneficial to all parties.
