In Focus: Premier League big guns will believe Asonganyi can match Alli impact

According to reports in The Mirror, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are among a number of Premier League clubs ready to make a January bid for 16-year-old MK Dons hotshot Dylan Asonganyi, who has scored 20 goals this season.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that the Gunners, the Red Devils and the Blues – along with top flight rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Leicester City – all had scouts to watch the impressive teenager in action as he starred in the Dons’ FA Youth Cup win against Barnet in midweek.

The striker is yet to make his debut for the first team but The Mirror says that his prolific goalscoring record and performances for the U18 and U23 sides this season mean that he is on the verge of being involved for the Dons in League One.

How good has he been this term?

He has been quite brilliant and it is no surprise that he is attracting admiring glances from the Premier League.

We may only be in November but Asonganyi broke through the 20-goal barrier against the Bees, and he has 20 goals in 17 appearances for the young MK Dons teams so far this season.

Could he be the ‘new Dele Alli?’

While Alli also came through the academy at MK Dons before earning his move to Tottenham in 2015, the fact that they play in different positions means they can’t really be compared.

Those interested clubs will certainly look at the England international’s progress and feel that Asonganyi has similar potential though, and there could be almighty battle for his services when the first bid is submitted.

Who will lead the race for his signature?

It’s difficult to say.

While all of the top five or six clubs in the Premier League are likely to lodge bids, Tottenham could hold a slight advantage due to their previous relationship with MK Dons when they bought Alli previously.

The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United will be keen to ensure they don’t lose out on another starlet with such potential though, and it could all come down to the location where he is most likely to get a first-team opportunity.

In Focus: Pulis can bring back organisation to faltering Rangers team

As reported by The Mirror, Tony Pulis is interested in becoming Rangers’ next permanent manager in the new year.

What’s the story?

Rangers have been searching for a replacement for Pedro Caixinha since October and with interim manager Graeme Murty struggling to find the consistency they need to challenge at the top of the Scottish Premiership table, a new boss needs to be named soon.

The Mirror report that Tony Pulis is interested in the position, with decision makers at Ibrox also growing increasingly keen that he is the man to lead the Light Blues forward.

However, Rangers will have to wait until the New Year to land their man, according to the paper, who say that Pulis is looking forward to having a rare festive period out of the game to spend time with family.

Interestingly, this weekend, the former West Brom manager enthused about Rangers as a club when speaking to beIN Sports on a Facebook Live broadcast.

Speaking to Richard Keys and Andy Gray, Pulis said:

That is one of the great clubs of British football. If you put Celtic and Rangers in the Premier League, I am telling you, the Premier League don’t want them because they are that big. I don’t think anybody can question the support or the size of the club.

Certainly sounds as if the Ibrox side are on his radar, but will the stars align to see him arrive as their next manager?

What can he offer Rangers?

Relative to the demands of Scottish football, Rangers actually have a pretty talented squad right now. They aren’t blessed with quality in every position and as a defensive unit there are question marks, but they certainly have enough for a manger like Tony Pulis to work with.

Despite being sacked recently by West Brom, Pulis is still a respected manager in British football and while there may be valid criticisms about his sides’ style of play, it’s undeniable that he’s always put discipline and organisation at the heart of his teams’ identity.

That philosophy, combined with the squad already in place at Ibrox, could be a winning combination.

He has vast experience at the top level and until recently has always managed to find results that match his former clubs’ ambitions.

His name is certainly one that should be interesting the hierarchy at Ibrox and with options limited and time of the essence, they could do a lot worse.

Rafa Benitez is a top-class manager and he should be performing better – he’s letting Newcastle down

Having secured the Championship title and an instant return to the Premier League last season by securing 94 points, Newcastle United fans would have been hopeful of a successful top flight campaign – as long as Rafa Benitez stayed with the club.

That wasn’t a certainty even after they went up, with the Spaniard unhappy that he hadn’t been backed by owner Mike Ashley during the January transfer window as he looked to get the players in that he felt would ensure promotion.

However, just days after they secured the trophy, the 57-year-old held positive talks with Ashley and decided to stay after the duo agreed on their summer transfer strategy.

It is fair to say that strategy probably didn’t go to plan though, and while he would have been happy to bring the likes of Joselu, Jacob Murphy, Mikel Merino and Florian Lejeune to St James’ Park, he would have been disappointed that he didn’t strengthen his team even further with more players with Premier League experience.

Benitez would certainly have liked to have brought in a new goalkeeper, and it certainly wouldn’t have been a surprise if he wanted a left-back and another striker as well.

However, that never happened and the former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss had to make do with what he had at his disposal to January.

Things weren’t looking good after the opening two Premier League matches with two successive defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and fellow newly-promoted side Huddersfield Town with no goals scored.

Their fortunes soon changed though and three straight wins followed against West Ham United, Swansea City and Stoke City as the Magpies moved into the top-half of the table.

Following another disappointing 1-0 defeat against the team they narrowly beat to the Championship title – Brighton and Hove Albion – Newcastle would have known that they needed to bounce back again, and once again they succeeded.

Draws against Liverpool and Southampton were followed by a much-needed three points against Crystal Palace in October – the last time the Tyneside outfit won a top flight match.

Since then, they have only taken one point from the possible 18 available and while they have suffered somewhat expected defeats away against Manchester United and Chelsea, home defeats against Watford, Bournemouth and a loss at Burnley were more disappointing.

With 15 matches of the season gone, Newcastle have been beaten by Huddersfield, Brighton, Burnley, Bournemouth and Watford and while it may be understandable given matches between teams outside of the top six have been so tight, Benitez and the club’s supporters will also be disappointed.

While it is clear to see that the Magpies don’t have the best team or squad in the English top flight and things are complicated off the pitch with owner Mike Ashley putting the club up for sale , those fans may have expected that with the experienced Spaniard at the helm that they would be doing better than they are right now.

Having led Liverpool to Champions League success and managed other big clubs like Real Madrid and Napoli in his career, Benitez should have the experience and know-how to not only get the best out of his players, but also to pick up positive results.

The 57-year-old should also be experienced in getting teams out of slumps, and that is exactly what Newcastle find themselves in right now.

Quick-fire home matches against Leicester City and Everton at St James’ Park this week give the Tyneside outfit the perfect opportunity to do just that, and Benitez needs to show his managerial class and experience to help the Magpies to at least four points with difficult-looking fixtures against Arsenal and leaders Manchester City on the horizon before 2018.

HYS: Should West Ham United make audacious swoop for Kovacic?

The transfer window is called silly season for a reason, and West Ham United fans are finding out why.

On Monday, Tuttomercatoweb reported that the East London outfit have made an offer for Real Madrid midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255571″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Five outrageous World Cup stats you won’t believe are true”]

The 24-year-old may end up moving on from the Spanish giants this summer purely due to lack of game time.

Last season, Kovacic made 35 appearances in all competitions and scored three goals in that time.

However, it would be a huge shock if he were to end up at the London Stadium.

Who do you think will win the World Cup? Let us know here and win any World Cup shirt of your choice.

The Hammers would surely not have the funds to launch a satisfactory enough bid for Los Blancos to accept.

In addition, the Premier League outfit could struggle to match Kovacic’s wages, although there is always the option of trying to secure a loan deal.

It would be an audacious move, but is it one that West Ham should take a chance with?

Jay Rodriguez return would make so much sense for Southampton

Southampton have already added Stuart Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi and most recently Angus Gunn to the squad, but manager Mark Hughes is not finished in the transfer market yet.

According to Sky Sports, central defender Jannik Vestergaard is expected to arrive at St. Mary’s at the start of next week after Southampton agreed a £18m fee with Borussia Monchengladbach for the 25-year-old’s services.

And once that is finally wrapped up, the Saints are likely to try their luck with bringing in a new centre-forward.

Guido Carrillo’s loan move to La Liga side Leganes and the different dilemmas that surround his other strikers means Hughes will be desperate to add a new No.9 to the squad.

Considering the above, West Brom and former Southampton man Jay Rodriguez could be a good option for Hughes.

Rodriguez, who is valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, netted seven times in 37 Premier League appearances for the Baggies last season and looks to have put his injuries behind him after featuring in all but one of his side’s league fixtures.

At Southampton, a team that plays more brave and expansive than West Brom, Rodriguez could hit double figures again as he did during his first spell at St. Mary’s.

Rodriguez scored 15 goals in the Saints’ 2013/14 Premier League campaign and, with West Brom condemned to the Championship, the 28-year-old could be available for transfer at the right price.

Tottenham fans urge club to sign Ivan Perisic after his World Cup final display

Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic impressed and scored in Croatia’s 4-2 World Cup final defeat to France in Moscow on Sunday, and Tottenham Hotspur fans have urged their club to sign the 29-year-old, rated at £36m by Transfermarkt.

The attacker impressed out wide for his country throughout the tournament in Russia, and he brought his nation back on to level terms with a brilliant finish into the far corner from just inside the penalty area.

It was his third goal of the 2018 World Cup, and he also showed what a big-game player he is with a goal and an assist in the 2-1 extra-time victory against England in the semi-finals, which ended Gareth Southgate’s side’s dreams of lifting the famous trophy.

These Tottenham supporters, some of whom have delivered their verdict on the story that one of their top targets could be set to join one of their London rivals, were quick to have their say on Perisic’s performance via social media, and while one told the chairman Daniel Levy to “please buy him”, another believes he “would fit perfectly as a Kane alternative or left-sided FWD”.

Tottenham fans would prefer to sign another winger instead of Wilfried Zaha

According to reports in The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are lining up a cash-plus-player bid for £60m-rated Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha, and Spurs fans have been quick to react with names of players they want instead.

The Mirror report that the north London outfit are willing to offer their neighbours from the capital Moussa Sissoko and money to try and bring the Ivory Coast international to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, as Mauricio Pochettino looks to add a new dimension to his attacking options.

However, they have also been linked with a whole host of other names this summer including Anthony Martial, Christian Pulisic and Malcom, and it seems as though they are among the names that would be preferred over a player that flopped when he made a big-money move to Manchester United previously.

Tottenham supporters, some of whom have reacted to a bizarre link with a prolific centre-forward, took to social media to give their thoughts on the latest transfer rumour, and while one said “I like Zaha but would prefer Pulisic or Martial”, another said “why get Zaha when you can get Malcom or Pulisic for cheaper”.

Recent reports could prompt Liverpool into move to re-sign Raheem Sterling

According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Raheem Sterling’s Manchester City future is far from certain amid a contract ‘stalemate’. The 23-year-old was outstanding for Pep Guardiola’s men last season in netting 23 goals and laying on 17 assists in all competitions, 18 goals and 15 assists of which coming in the Premier League as the Citizens stormed to the title in accumulating 100 points from their 38 matches.

Yet City are reportedly willing to sell the £81 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) next summer if he does not agree a new deal, and these reports could prompt Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool into an audacious move to re-sign the attacker.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the 23-year-old left Anfield back in 2015 after coming up through the ranks and beginning his senior career on Merseyside, with the England international scoring 23 goals and laying on 25 assists in 129 games for the Reds.

Yet his move to City was met with widespread negativity given the way it was seemingly handled, but one cannot deny that it was a decision that has advanced Sterling’s footballing career given he has since gone on to win the Premier League under Guardiola, and produced the best season of his career last time round.

And while it is unlikely to be a popular move among Liverpool fans, their side should seek to lure Sterling back to Anfield, as doing so would provide them with greater depth and competition in the forward ranks.

The lethal front three of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah netted a staggering 91 goals between them in all competitions last term to underline their status as one of the best attacking forces in Europe, yet the strength in depth outside of the trio is very much lacking.

And that’s because Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke are the first in line when it comes to replacing any of the aforementioned trio, and while Xherdan Shaqiri’s arrival from Stoke City will go some way to giving Klopp another option, he’s not at the same level as messrs Firmino, Mane, and Salah – Sterling is though.

The 23-year-old scored 18 goals in the Premier League last season to help City comfortably win the title, but his tally of 15 assists also underlines that not only does he have the goal-scoring in him, but he’s also got the creativity to contribute even when not scoring, which has become a requirement of the modern-day winger.

Yet with his City future somewhat uncertain, Liverpool could seek to make an audacious move to lure the England international back to Anfield.

Revealed: 74% of West Brom fans don’t want new-boy Townsend to start over Gibbs

Darren Moore has continued his assembly of a West Brom side fit to make an instant return to the Premier League by beating Championship competition to sign left-back Conor Townsend from Scunthorpe United, for an undisclosed fee.

Meanwhile, reports in Italy suggest that Moore is open to the idea of offloading former England international Kieran Gibbs, with Torino interested in securing the left-back’s signature.

With one left-back coming in around the same time that a more experienced one coming it, it is tempting to consider that one may be a replacement for the other.

With Chris Brunt and Allan Nyom at the club and able to deputise in the left-back role, Townsend could well take on the role of first-choice left-back from Gibbs, so we asked West Brom fans whether they would like that to be the case.

They don’t; 74 per cent of the fans who responded do not want new-boy Townsend to start ahead of Gibbs during the new season, as shown by the full results below…
