A former Manchester United employee who worked closely with Sir Alex Ferguson has heard the Red Devils are eying a “top” Ruben Amorim replacement.
Man Utd manager targets with Amorim under pressure
It feels as if Amorim’s sacking at Old Trafford could be a matter of when and not if following a poor start to the Premier League season.
Reports have even suggested that Man Utd will wait until November to part ways with the Portuguese coach, which will lower the compensation due to Amorim as that figure currently stands at £12m.
In regards to replacements, a number of managers have been heavily linked with taking over from the 40-year-old.
Their own Pep: "Incredible" manager favourite to replace Amorim at Man Utd
Manchester United look set to turn to one other manager in their hunt to replace Ruben Amorim.
ByEthan Lamb Oct 1, 2025
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is thought to be open to the idea of taking over from Amorim, Sir Gareth Southgate has been in direct contact with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Xavi Hernandez is another thought to be among the favourites.
However, another name is thought to be under consideration at Old Trafford by INEOS.
Ex-Man Utd employee says Man Utd are eyeing “top” Amorim replacement
Former Red Devils scout Mick Brown, who worked closely under Ferguson during Man Utd’s dominance for more than 10 years, has been talking to Football Insider regarding potential replacements for Amorim.
Brown remains very well-connected at United and has heard that Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler is a “top option” those at Old Trafford would consider.
Hurzeler, who is just 32 years of age, has already been quizzed on the rumours linking him with a move to Manchester, but was quick to respect Amorim.

“Of course it is always an honour to be part of the rumours but I really respect the coach, Ruben Amorim, there. I think it is not the right thing to talk about this.
“Overall, I can say it is a privilege to work with Brighton. I am very happy to be the coach here and we have a lot of work in front of us.”

Former England and Zimbabwe batter Gary Ballance has been added to the coaching staff for Zimbabwe’s tour of England later this month. Ballance, who spent more than a decade playing county cricket with Yorkshire, will join as a coaching consultant for the one-off, four-day Test at Trent Bridge starting on May 22.”We are thrilled to welcome Gary Ballance to our coaching set-up for this historic tour,” Givemore Makoni, Zimbabwe Cricket’s managing director, said. “His deep understanding of English conditions, gained over years of playing at the highest level, will be a valuable asset to our team’s tactical preparation.”Having made his Test debut on the 2013-14 Ashes tour, Ballance became the third-fastest England player to 1000 Test runs, taking just 17 innings (a mark since equalled by Harry Brook). But his returns dipped sharply, and he did not play again for his adopted nation after 2017.Ballance played 23 Tests for England and subsequently opted to represent Zimbabwe, the country of his birth, playing one Test, five ODIs and one T20I in 2023 before retiring. His 137 not out on his Zimbabwe Test debut made him only the second man to score centuries for two Test nations.Zimbabwe are set to leave for the UK on Friday and will play a warm-up match against a first-class County XI in Leicester ahead of the four-day Test. They are also scheduled to face South Africa in Arundel on June 3-6 as part of the South Africans’ build-up to the World Test Championship [WTC] final against Australia.

+ Confira detalhes do documento do caso Damião
E A SITUAÇÃO?

It was Durham’s second Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire in six days

Graham Clark led Durham with a half-century•Mark Fletcher/Durham Cricket
Durham claimed their second Vitality Blast win over Yorkshire in six days as they strengthened their position inside the North Group’s top four places with a comprehensive victory at the Banks Homes Riverside. With this 63-run success, Durham’s fifth in eight matches, they all but ended Yorkshire’s chances of reaching the quarter-finals. This was their sixth defeat in eight as they failed to chase 194.Durham’s 193 for 4 included a series of dynamic contributions, led by opener Graham Clark’s 53 off 35 balls. New Zealand allrounder Jimmy Neesham also starred with 42 not out off 21 before striking twice with the ball in defence.Yorkshire’s forlorn chase continued through a ground power-cut, and they were bowled out for 130 inside 18 overs. Opener Adam Lyth top-scored with 38.Durham beat Yorkshire at York on Sunday, a game in which England seamer Matthew Potts starred with 5 for 17.Yorkshire started tidily in this return fixture, conceding only seven in the first two overs having elected to bowl. But Durham hit back courtesy of their captain, Alex Lees.He clattered four fours in five balls – strong on the pull – as 17 runs came off Will O’Rourke in the third over, the hosts going on to reach 50 without loss from five overs. Lees edged the same bowler behind in the sixth over, falling for 40 off 24 balls.Every Durham batter aside from Ben McKinney, who made 5 before top-edging behind off Jafer Chohan, got set and contributed.Chief among them were Lees, fellow opener Clark and experienced Neesham, who crashed two sixes in his late assault, including a huge heave over midwicket off fellow Kiwi O’Rourke.Clark started the 13th over by muscling back-to-back sixes down the ground off Chohan’s leg-spin before reaching his fifty off 30 balls later in the over.Having shared 56 with Lees, Clark added a third-wicket 62 with Colin Ackermann, 28, before both holed out to O’Rourke in the 15th over.Neesham then ended with a bang to give Yorkshire a sizeable task in reply. The visitors started well with the bat, captain Dawid Malan hoisting a six over midwicket off Callum Parkinson’s spin as 24 came from the first two overs.Malan, on 21, was bowled by Potts with the score on 42 in the fifth over. The brief power cut didn’t stop play despite no floodlights or scoreboard, and it also seemed as if Yorkshire’s power was cut as the score reached 74 for 3 after 10 overs, with 120 more needed.Jonny Bairstow was bowled for 19 as he tried to attack Nathan Sowter’s leg-spin before Will Luxton dragged left-armer Parkinson to long-on.And when Lyth was run out backing up by Parkinson following a fierce Will Sutherland drive, Yorkshire were 91 for 5 in the 12th over and under severe pressure. It was quickly evident that their task was too tall, and with it surely went their hopes of quarter-final qualification.Sowter struck again to remove Jordan Thompson shortly afterwards before Neesham’s seam – 2 for 23 from three overs – ousted Sutherland and Chohan as the White Rose subsided.
While the glory is yet to arrive, Mikel Arteta has utterly transformed Arsenal over the last five years or so.
He took charge of a team that were stuck in mid-table and, within a few years, turned them into genuine challengers for the Premier League and Champions League.
This incredible evolution is certainly due in part to his philosophy and tactics, but it has also been aided by the exceptional players he has signed along the way.
That said, there is a superstar in the team today, signed by Unai Emery, whose valuation has exploded over the years, someone who has been pivotal to the evolution of the backline.
The evolution of Arsenal's backline
The first game of Arteta’s tenure was away to Bournemouth in December 2019, and to say the backline for that match was underwhelming would be an understatement.
Arteta’s first Arsenal XI
GK – Bernd Leno
RB – Ainsley Maitland-Niles
CB – Sokratis
CB – David Luiz
LB – Bukayo Saka
CM – Lucas Torreira
CM – Granit Xhaka
RW – Reiss Nelson
CAM – Mesut Ozil
LW – Aubameyang
CF – Alexandre Lacazette
In fact, the only player still at the club is Bukayo Saka, and the idea of the Gunners’ now playing their best attacker at left-back is patently absurd.
Fortunately, Gabriel Magalhães was signed from LOSC Lille the following summer to replace Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The manager still opted for a three or five-at-the-back system for the start of the 20/21 season, which was soon replaced with the four-at-the-back system that fans were clamouring for at the time.
That season saw Gabriel start most games, and then, depending on who was fit, it would be David Luiz or Robert Holding next to him, with Hector Bellerin or Maitland-Niles on the right and, again, when fit, Kieran Tierney on the left.
That summer saw another key figure join the club in Ben White, who, for the 21/22 campaign, became the other regular starting centre-back alongside the Gunners’ current number six.
The Englishman would move to the right-back position just a year later, the same summer Oleksandr Zinchenko joined the club.
Market Movers
Football FanCast’s Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club’s star player or biggest flop worth today?
However, his defensive fragilities would see him start to lose his place within 18 months and then altogether with the emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly and the arrival of Riccardo Calafiori two years later.
Finally, the defence everyone recognises today was completed upon the return to fitness of Jurrien Timber, David Raya making the goalkeeping role his own, and a certain signing made by Emery, who is now worth a king’s ransom.
The Emery signing now with a fortune
Arsenal’s defence is now a beast but there’s one man, despite Gabriel’s best efforts, who always maintains the same standards.
That man is William Saliba, who joined Arsenal for around £27m in the summer of 2019 when, remarkably, Emery was still in charge.
He didn’t actually play a competitive game for the club until the start of the 22/23 season, when his arrival saw White move to the right.
Impressively, the Frenchman is now valued at a staggering €103m by the CIES Football Observatory, which works out to around £89m, or 229% more than he cost the Gunners over five years ago. To put that into context, CIES believe that he is the most valuable player in the whole squad, even ahead of Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka.
That is an incredible increase, but it’s one that his performances and potential more than justify.
For example, in just his first game for the club, away to Crystal Palace, he helped the team to keep a clean sheet and was named the Man of the Match.
He then went on to play a crucial role in the North Londoners’ surprise title challenge, which unsurprisingly started to come apart following his back injury against Sporting CP towards the end of the season.
Since then, he has undoubtedly become an even better defender, someone who is as capable of putting in a last-minute goal-denying challenge or pinging the ball from the defence up to Saka to create a chance.

For example, FBref ranked him in the top 1% of centre-backs in the Premier League last season for pass completion, the top 4% for live-ball passes, the top 6% for total shots, the top 8% for passes blocked and more, all per 90.
Moreover, he has also helped the Gunners produce the best defence in the league for the last two seasons, and considering they’ve conceded just three goals in seven games this year, it may well be three in a row come May.
It cannot be overstated just how vital the Bondy-born “monster,” as dubbed by content creator Connor Humm, is to Arteta’s project, and so the news that he signed a five-year contract extension last week was as exciting as a new signing.
Ultimately, Arsenal have created arguably the best defence in Europe over the last three years, and Saliba has been a massive part of that.,
"I can guarantee" – Arsenal player reveals exit timeline with next club already decided
Manchester City experienced an almighty fall from grace last season, as Arne Slot’s Liverpool took over the reins of being the Premier League’s classiest side with ease.
Heading into the 2024/25 season, Pep Guardiola’s unstoppable force had collected four Premier League titles in a row, with many wondering if the Sky Blue domination of the English top-flight could ever be stopped.
Yet, come the end of the 38-game marathon, City sat – bruised and battered – with 71 points next to their name and nine defeats picked up, 13 points off the Reds at the summit of the tough division.
Even the likes of Erling Haaland and Kevin De Bruyne, who are both world-class operators in their own right, couldn’t spearhead a push up the punishing league, with that crash back to reality proving to be the revered Belgian’s final season at the club, after a FA Cup final loss to Crystal Palace only added more unbearable salt to the gaping wound.
Ultimately, losing Rodri for the entire campaign through injury was the sickener, with the Spanish enforcer experiencing a superhuman 2023/24 season for both club and country, which was then, unfortunately, met by injury heartbreak.
How Rodri became the best in the world at Man City
Rodri was a standout signing from the get-go, having cost a club-record fee in 2019 of £62.8m to bring to England from Atletico Madrid.
Swiftly, the Madrid-born midfielder would become the heartbeat of a frightening Citizens side gearing up for domestic domination, with only three top-flight games missed during his debut season as his new employers lost out on the title to the unstoppable train of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool, who amassed a mighty 99 points.
Rodri would only get better and better from this point onwards, though, as his personal trophy collection at the Etihad started to overflow.
The assured number 16 would collect 13 goal contributions just in the Premier League alone to guide his untouchable outfit to back-to-back Premier League titles, before becoming an untouchable world-beater during the memorable 2023/24 season for both Guardiola’s men and his nation.
The signs were there that Rodri was about to undergo a Ballon d’Or-winning journey, considering the close of the 2022/23 campaign saw the calm 29-year-old confidently stroke this effort home to finally bring an elusive Champions League back to the Sky Blue half of Manchester. Clearly, he had got a taste for being the man of the moment.
A stunning tally of eight goals and ten assists in league action from the reliable Spaniard the following campaign would clinch a mighty four Premier League titles in a row, leaving Guardiola to hail his dependable hero as “the best midfielder in the world” at that point in time, and it was an argument that was hard to knock down.
It would lead to Rodri picking up the illustrious Ballon d’Or accolade late last year, with the award all but sealed for the 29-year-old to collect when he was the glue that Luis De La Fuente’s Spain needed to lift the 2024 Euros, at the cruel expense of England in the final.
While only one goal contribution would come his way in the fast-paced tournament, Rodri was crucial in other ways as the battling, yet composed figure Spain needed in some crunch moments, with a 93% pass accuracy average, as per Sofascore, matched by a hunger to win 5.2 duels per pain-staking match-up.
Consistently playing at the peak of his powers very much took its toll on the much-loved number 16, though, with a cruciate ligament tear sustained last season by Rodri, obviously devastating news for those with connections to Guardiola and Co. and La Roja.
The road to recovery saw him miss a colossal 53 games for both club and country, as City’s elite club status took a battering, but Rodri looks to be slowly getting up to speed now, as City attempts to challenge Liverpool again for major honours.
Even with the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner now back available for selection, Guardiola actually has another Rodri-like player in his camp at the moment, who is also considered one of the world’s best in his own spot on the pitch.
Man City now have another Rodri-type player
Having experienced such a turbulent season last time out, City clearly felt like splashing significant wads of cash in the summer would suture up their problems effectively.
It has worked out somewhat, too, with new recruit Tijani Reijnders already being branded as “unbelievable” by Guardiola after powering home a confident strike on his Premier League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Having cost a sizeable £46.5m to obtain in the summer, the first impression is that this is money well spent.
For around £16m cheaper, though, City have arguably won themselves the steal of the transfer window when landing Italian favourite Gianluigi Donnarumma, with the brand-new number 25 playing at the very top of his game for some time now, since making his AC Milan debut at just 16 years of age a decade ago.
His agent, when he was just a teenager, in Mino Raiola, even wildly claimed that Donnarumma could go on to become “the best goalkeeper in the world”, with his outlandish comments now looking like unbelievable hindsight when you scan over his very successful career, leading up to his big Etihad move.

The 6-foot-5 beast has become well-known for being a serial trophy winner off the back of collecting 180 career clean sheets – much like Rodri at City – with 12 major accolades coming his way when being the number one stopper for both the Rossoneri and PSG.
In a similar fashion to Rodri, too, he has broken Three Lions hearts for his beloved Azzurri on the international stage, with Donnarumma the penalty shootout hero that saw Roberto Mancini’s Italy upset England at Wembley during the 2021 Euros final.
Also helping PSG to the Champions League glory last season via “elite” saves such as this one tallied up against Arsenal – with Mikel Merino labelling the Italian as such after the close contest at the Parc Des Princes – it’s clear that Guardiola bringing in the 78-time Italy international was done to try and kickstart another patch of success in Manchester, much like what Rodri offered up all those years ago when deserting La Liga.
With just four goals surrendered during his opening three clashes in England, it’s clear that Raiola’s crystal ball prediction wasn’t just wild praise for the sake of it, with Italy legend Alessandro Costacurta reinforcing this notion that he is an elite stopper when calling him “the best in the world” after that standout Gunners showing.
Guardiola will hope he can be a thorn in the side of the Gunners in the Premier League, as well, as Donnarumma attempts to pick up more domestic silverware – having conquered both Italy and France – with City, knowing he has an equally trophy-hungry teammate next to him in Rodri.
Man City duo who "enjoy playing together" are the new Aguero and Dzeko
Sergio Agüero and Edin Džeko are arguably Manchester City’s best-ever strike partnership.
