Plenty of managers have experienced the sensation of qualifying easily before failing spectacularly at a major competition. Fabio Capello, Sven-Goran Eriksson and Roy Hodgson failed to reach the final tournament highs that they did during qualification.

Tuchel could be the one to finally lead England to another major international title. With his first game potentially showing signs of things to come, we have taken a look back at every England manager’s first matches in charge.

1 Walter Winterbottom Ireland 2-7 England, 1946 British Home Championship

Walter Winterbottom became the first manager of the England national team in 1946. Prior to this, the team was picked by a variety of international selectors, who also chose the starting XI.

Winterbottom was in charge of the nation between 1946 and 1963, with his first match coming against Ireland in the 1946 British Home Championship.

It proved to be an excellent start, as England ran out 7-2 winners over their opponents. His last match came against Wales in November 1962, a 4-0 victory in the same competition – one that he won 13 times during his spell as head coach.

2 Sir Alf Ramsey France 5-2 England, 1964 European Nations' Cup qualifying

Alf Ramsey will go down in the history books as the first – and so far, only manager – to lead England to a major international trophy, winning the World Cup in 1966.

However, his reign got off to the worst possible start as they suffered a hammering at the hands of France.

The 5-2 defeat ensured England wouldn’t qualify for the main stages of the 1964 European Nations’ Cup (later to be known as the European Championship), which was won by Spain.

Along with the World Cup in 1966, Ramsey led England to the quarter-finals of the 1970 edition, falling to West Germany, while they qualified for the 1968 European Championship, losing to Yugoslavia in the semi-finals.

His last match came in 1973 as England failed to qualify for the World Cup the following year.

Don Revie took Leeds United from the Second Division to the top flight before making them arguably the finest club in England. Two league titles were won, along with the FA Cup and League Cup, but they should have won more.

With this in mind, he was the best choice to lead England, and his first match in charge was a success, securing a 3-0 win over Czechoslovakia in 1974.

England failed to qualify for the 1976 European Championship, as the team Revie had defeated in his first match eventually went on to win the competition.

4 Ron Greenwood England 0-0 Switzerland, friendly

Ron Greenwood led West Ham United to the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup the following year. His appointment in 1977 was seen as a safe choice.

His first match was a friendly clash against Switzerland which finished 0-0. During his reign, he secured qualification for the 1982 World Cup. Although they made it to the second group stage, England failed to score in their two games and were eliminated.

5 Sir Bobby Robson Denmark 2-2 England, Euro 1984 qualifying

Sir Bobby Robson’s success at Ipswich Town, winning the FA Cup and UEFA Cup, indicated that he was the best choice for the role.

His first match against Denmark ended in a 2-2 draw. The Danes ended up securing the qualifying spot for the 1984 European Championship. Robson eventually led England to the finals of the World Cup in 1986 and Euro 1988.

It was their performance at Italia 90 which gave Robson a great send-off as they made it to the semifinals, losing to West Germany.

6 Graham Taylor England 1-0 Hungary, friendly

Graham Taylor’s first match in charge of England was a 1-0 win over Hungary at Wembley. He managed to lead the nation to Euro 1992, although England failed to make it beyond the group stage.

More strife was to come, as Taylor couldn’t steer England to the 1994 World Cup, suffering defeats to the Netherlands and Norway in qualifying.

7 Terry Venables England 1-0 Denmark, friendly

Terry Venables took over the job from Taylor, securing a win over Denmark in his first match in charge. Due to England hosting Euro 1996, England didn’t play any qualifiers, relying on various friendlies to keep them ticking over.

A run to the semi-finals of the competition was England’s best display since the 1990 World Cup, but the penalty-shootout defeat to Germany proved to be Venables’ final match in charge of his country.

8 Glenn Hoddle Moldova 0-3 England, 1998 World Cup qualifying

Glenn Hoddle secured an easy 3-0 win over Moldova in his first game in charge of the Three Lions, which featured a young David Beckham making his England debut.

He led the nation to the 1998 World Cup and hopes were high for the tournament. Facing Argentina in the last 16, England were (once again) knocked out on penalties.

His last match came against the Czech Republic in November that same year.

9 Kevin Keegan England 3-1 Poland, Euro 2000 qualifying

Kevin Keegan’s reign got off to a flyer, defeating Poland 3-1 as they secured a win in their hopes of qualifying for Euro 2000.

They sealed their place at the tournament held by Belgium and the Netherlands, but defeats to Portugal and Romania ensured the nation flew home early.

He resigned after a 1-0 loss to Germany in October 2000, allegedly in the toilets.

10 Sven-Goran Eriksson England 3-0 Spain, friendly

Sven-Goran Eriksson became the first foreign coach of England, and began his tenure with an impressive 3-0 win over Spain in a friendly.

Across his five and a half years in charge, Eriksson led the nation to the quarter-finals at the World Cups in 2002 and 2006, as well as at Euro 2004.

Having the so-called ‘golden generation’ at his disposal, he ought to have reached at least one final, but penalties proved to be his undoing more often than not.

Esses dados foram levantados pelo historiador do clube Michael Serra. Em um período de 30 dias, o Tricolor eliminou duas equipes fora de casa neste modo e em duas competições diferentes.

No dia 14 de julho, o São Paulo eliminou um dos seus maiores rivais nas oitavas de final da Copa do Brasil. A equipe de Rogério Ceni bateu o Palmeiras no Allianz Parque após vencer uma disputa de pênaltispor 4 a 3, depois de uma derrota por 2 a 1 no tempo normal. Na ocasião, Jandrei defendeu duas cobranças dos alviverdes.

Poucos dias depois, nesta quarta-feira (10), foi a vez de bater o Ceará na Copa Sul-Americana. Na Arena Castelão, o Tricolor seguiu um padrão parecido. Também foi derrotado em tempo normal, por 2 a 1. Mas por conta da vantagem do jogo de ida, disputado no Morumbi, a decisão ficou nas penalidades, onde o São Paulo se deu melhor e eliminou o Vozão na casa da equipe cearense.

Antes disso, o menor intervalo entre duas vitórias fora do Morumbi em disputas de pênaltis – que valiam por classificação ou título – aconteceu há quase 30 anos, em 1993.

Na ocasião, o Tricolor bateu o Cruzeiro, pela Recopa, e o Atlético Nacional, pela Supercopa, entre 29 de setembro de 1993 e 10 de novembro do mesmo ano.

Mas além desta marca, outra foi rompida pelo clube na mesma decisão. Com a classificação frente ao Ceará, o time se tornou recordista brasileiroem semifinais do continental. Foi a equipe nacional que mais alcançou semifinais em toda a história da competição: cinco vezes.

Os pênaltis, por sua vez, se tornaram frequentes em decisões positivas recentes do Tricolor. Nos últimos quatro enfrentamentos que se envolveu, todas elas tiveram um resultado positivo – e uma boa participação dos goleiros. Na quarta-feira (10), o novo reforço Felipe Alves ficou na responsabilidade do gol.

Muito desse retrospecto se deve ao foco da equipe nos treinamentos das cobranças e no preparo mental para enfrentar este tipo de situação. E o recorde em um período curto de tempo exemplifica bem esta questão.

Foram duas decisões importantes, com adversários complicados e com o fator da torcida adversária – uma vez que ambas as classificações ocorreram fora do Morumbi.

Luciano, que ficou responsável por uma das conversões, destacou que nos treinos recentes este fundamento foi bem visado por Rogério Ceni, além da ênfase na força psicológica.

– A gente treinou ontem. Estava todo mundo bem concentrado e nosso goleiro ajudou também – destacou o atacante.

O pênalti marcado por Diego Costa também expõe bem este fator. O jogador atua como zagueiro e também foi bem na cobrança.

– A equipe do Ceará é muito boa, ainda mais na casa deles. Mas a gente conseguiu se portar bem no jogo. Merecemos a classificação, sim. Fico feliz pela classificação e a entrega do grupo – afirmou o defensor sobre a classificação.

Esta sequência de jogos decididos por penalidades fora de casa pode ampliar ainda mais. Na próxima quinta-feira (18), o Tricolor volta a encontrar o América-MG pelas quartas de final da Copa do Brasil. O confronto, por sua vez, acontecerá no Estádio Independência.

O São Paulo também chega com a vantagem de um gol. Caso a partida de volta termine em um empate no placar agregado (1 a 0 para o Coelho), novamente a resolução ficará nas penalidades.

Manchester United avoided defeat in all competitions through March. In fact, Ruben Amorim’s side are currently riding a seven-match unbeaten run.

There’s so much work to do. However, signs are appearing, sprouting like spring shoots. Maybe the Red Devils have a future under the wing of their Portuguese boss; maybe these interminable years of strife are going to be consigned to the history books, something to look back on with pride at leaps taken since INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe arrived at Old Trafford.

Chances of seasonal success through the Premier League are negligible. 13th, United’s hopes of salvation lie on the continental front, with Athletic Bilbao awaiting next month in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Amorim must make do with the resources available for the remainder of the campaign, but the wider picture portrays the need for drastic action. A host of players needed to be shipped on, but Rasmus Hojlund is surely one of the most pressing cases.

Rasmus Hojlund's nightmare season

Manchester United have been put through the wringer this season, but there’s surely only one way the club can go henceforth. It really has been the nadir for the prestigious outfit, one of the biggest on the globe.

INEOS must be ruthless, and while he’s still young, Hojlund isn’t cutting it and should be sold this summer to make room for a new and exciting number nine.

Reports suggest that the Denmark international is among the most likely names to depart this summer, with Italian side Napoli named. United might have paid Atalanta £72m for this raw centre-forward, but losses need to be cut.

Hojlund finally broke his duck in the Premier League before the international break, slotting home against Leicester City, but that’s only his third league goal of the term – and across 24 matches at that.

Profligacy is one thing, but Hojlund’s dearth of missed chances actually underpins the deeper fissures splitting United’s core. He’s bereft of service, unable to fashion openings for himself, incapable of leading confidently at the bow of Amorim’s ship.

In fairness, the likes of Erling Haaland would have struggled to meet expectations in United’s team this season, but Hojlund still hasn’t pulled his weight. Journalist Sam Pilger branded him “anonymous,” stating his “confidence is on the floor.”

United want to replace him this summer.

Man United lining up Hojlund upgrade

According to Manchester United’s former chief scout Mick Brown – speaking to Football Insider – INEOS are prepared to launch a statement move for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres this summer and are even considered favourites to complete a deal.

That’s in spite of interest from rival suitors such as Arsenal and Liverpool, chiefly because Amorim turned the Sweden striker into a free-scoring machine before moving to England and is the driving force behind the potential deal.

Gyokeres wouldn’t come cheap, but the Devils wouldn’t need to fork out for his full £83m release clause, with the Liga Portugal champions fielding enquiries worth £63m.

Were Hojlund to be sold this summer, things could come together at the Theatre of Dreams.

What Viktor Gyokeres would bring to Man Utd

There’s a reason why Gyokeres is one of the most coveted players in world football. In fact, journalist Mark Ogden has described the 26-year-old as “the hottest striker in Europe.”

Born in Sweden, reared at Brighton, but made under the watchful wing of Amorim. Coventry City’s goalscorer came close (but not close enough) to securing qualification to the Premier League in 2022/23, earning a £20m move to Lisbon.

Scorer of 83 goals, placer of 25 assists, winner of the 23/24 Liga Portugal title – all across 91 appearances. Not bad at all for a Seagulls reject. Is it any wonder he’s been hailed as a “powerhouse” in front of goal by analyst Ben Mattinson?

He’s not restricted his output to any one front this term, notably firing a hat-trick past Manchester City in the Champions League several months back – with Amorim still at the helm.

As per FBref, Gyokeres ranks among the top 4% of strikers across Europe’s top-five leagues over the past year for goals scored, the top 6% for pass completion and shot-creating actions and the top 4% for progressive carries per 90.

He does, after all, boast 40 goals from 41 matches this season. It seems inconceivable that he wouldn’t prove to be an upgrade on Hojlund, whose lack of presence at number nine, his reduced ball-carrying output and ball-striking quality, does make a telling comment on where he should fit into INEOS’s market strategy this summer.

Hojlund might not be the most wasteful forward in front of goal when observing the statistical analysis, but Gyokeres is far more predatory, combining movement, pace and potency to supercharge Sporting’s project.

He takes 4.2 shots per Liga Portugal match this season, missing just 17 big chances despite having scored 28 goals. Gyokeres is everything that Man United need up top and more.

Amorim knows him, loves him. Gyokeres hailed the gaffer back in November, saying: “We’ve done amazing things together.” Why not some more?

Hanuma Vihari made 839 runs in 16 Tests for India•BCCI

In an effort to reignite his India career, Hanuma Vihari is set to play for Madhya Pradesh in the 2023-24 domestic season. The 29-year-old, who has played 16 Tests, will be one of two professionals in the mix, subject to a No Objection Certificate from his current employers, the Andhra Cricket Association.Vihari will join an already strong middle order comprising Rajat Patidar, Venkatesh Iyer and Shubham Sharma. Vihari is currently captaining South Zone in the Duleep Trophy and may be in contention to lead Madhya Pradesh as well. It is understood he was keen to play under Chandrakant Pandit, a renowned domestic cricket coach who has won the Ranji Trophy with Mumbai, Vidarbha and, most-recently, with MP.Vihari hasn’t been part of India’s Test squad since July last year, when they played the final Test of the five-match series in England. In his 16-match career so far, Vihari has managed 839 runs at an average of 33.56 with his lone century coming against West Indies.In his most recent domestic season, where he captained Andhra to the knockouts, Vihari managed just 490 runs in 14 innings with two half-centuries. His final act was a gutsy rearguard effort where he batted left-handed – he is a right-hander normally – to protect a broken forearm. Overall, his first-class numbers are quite formidable. He averages 53.41 across 113 matches that have brought him 8600 runs, including 23 centuries and 45 half-centuries.Having started his career with Hyderabad, he moved to Andhra in 2015-16. He then briefly returned to Hyderabad prior to the 2021-22 season before moving to Andhra again. MP will be his third team.Madhya Pradesh were also keen on signing a left-arm fast bowler and have zeroed in on Kulwant Khejroliya, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders, the IPL franchise coached by Pandit.Khejroliya, 31, has an opportunity to establish himself across formats after years of frustration in Delhi. Since his debut in 2017-18, he has managed just 14 first-class matches for a modest return of 32 wickets. Khejroliya’s List-A numbers are far more impressive, though. In 29 matches, he has picked up 61 wickets at an average of 19.52. The MPCA has named Vihari and Khejroliya among the probables who will go through a conditioning camp before the start of the season.

Dessa forma, qualquer cirurgia está descartada, e o clube optou por um tratamento conservador devido ao retrospecto recente do atleta. No primeiro momento, havia o temor de que a lesão fosse mais grave, porém um exame de imagem no menisco medial tranquilizou o atleta e o clube carioca. O jogador tem ido a campo e feito corridas com os fisioterapeutas do clube. Ele sofreu a lesão no revés por 1 a 0 para o Corinthians, dia 10 de julho, em Itaquera. Na época, o defensor sofreu um estalo na região e deixou o gramado.

Em dezembro de 2021, o zagueiro passou por uma artroscopia e teve complicações em virtude de uma infecção. Neste ano, ele disputou 12 partidas e fez sua estreia diante do Altos, pela Copa do Brasil. Diante das lesões, o Flamengo foi ao mercado e contratou Pablo e Fabrício Bruno para o setor.

ZAGUEIRO TEM SOFRIDO COM CONSTANTES LESÕES

Rodrigo Caio tem sofrido com lesões, algo que se intensificou em 2020. No início daquela temporada, sofreu um corte no joelho direito, em janeiro, e uma lesão na coxa esquerda, em fevereiro. No fim daquele ano, tevedesgaste muscular, edema ósseo no joelho direito e lesão na panturrilha direita. Na época, também contraiu Covid-19 e ficou afastado dos gramados.

Em 2021, logo em janeiro, teve um problema muscular na coxa esquerda. Meses depois, em abril, apresentou uma fibrose na coxa direita e em junho, dores na perna direita. O jogador passou por uma cirurgia no fim de 2021 e teve uma inflamação durante o período de folga, o que retardou seu retorno.

Enquanto isso, o São Paulo segue com 29 pontos, na 13ª colocação. Mas o que gera mais preocupação são algumas estatísticas e a proximidade com times que estão na zona de rebaixamento.

No Brasileirão, até o momento, o Tricolor contou com seis vitórias, onze empates e sete derrotas. De todas as vinte equipes que disputam o torneio de pontos corridos – conforme dados levantados pelo FootStats – o elenco de Ceni está entre as com menos vitórias no campeonato.

O time só está atrás de três elencos. No caso,Juventude (3), Atlético-Go (5) e Ceará (5). Destes, somente o Ceará não se encontra no Z4. Outro ponto que chama atenção é a quantidade de gols sofridos.

No duelo com o Fortaleza, foi mais ofensivo e pressionou bem o adversário. Porém, mesmo assim, não conseguiu aproveitar nenhuma oportunidade. Já o Leão do Pici, em uma das poucas chances que encontrou, abriu o placar e saiu com vitória.

Das 24 rodadas do Brasileirão disputadas até o momento, o São Paulo só não foi vazado em cinco. Desde a volta de Jandrei, pela Copa do Brasil contra o América-MG, o Tricolor paulista marcou três gols e sofreu sete.

Durante a coletiva de imprensa pós jogo, Rogério Ceni destacou que mesmo que a equipe venha de três derrotas consecutivas, o maior problema não é o setor defensivo, mas sim as oportunidades que as equipes adversárias encontram.

– A gente finaliza muito no gol adversário, os times não finalizam tanto. O Flamengo finalizou quatro, o Fortaleza só uma no nosso gol. O duro é se o nosso goleiro fosse sempre o melhor em campo fazendo oito defesas, era preocupante dando muitas chances ao adversário – disse.

Em meio a esta situação, a corda está ficando cada vez mais apertada no pescoço do time. Vivo em três competições, mesmo que conversas referentes à ‘prioridades’ tenham sido negadas, isso foi evidente.

Com o resultado negativo contra o Flamengo no primeiro encontro válido pela semifinal na Copa do Brasil, a situação no Campeonato Brasileiro passou a ser mais percebida.

Dos últimos dez jogos no campeonato, o Tricolor saiu com somente duas vitórias – sendo estes contra o Atlético-GO e o Red Bull Bragantino. Com este retrospecto, o clube passou a flertar com equipes localizadas na zona de rebaixamento.

Atualmente, está somente a quatro pontos do 17º colocado, o Cuiabá. Caso siga nesta tendência, há chances reais de passar por um sufoco parecido com o vivido na temporada passada, onde chegou perto de ser rebaixado pela primeira vez em toda a sua história.

Entretanto, os olhares agora se voltam para a Copa Sul-Americana. Na próxima quinta-feira (1), às 21h30, o São Paulo encontra o Atlético-GO em casa pelo primeiro jogo válido nas semifinais do continental.
