Slot has struck gold on Liverpool ace who’s playing like a £200m superstar

Before a ball had been kicked this season, 30 BBC Sport pundits were asked to jot down their Premier League pre-season title predictions. Not one pundit picked Liverpool as champions.

In fact, only two pundits – Stephen Warnock and Fara Williams – had the Reds in their top two, for Jurgen Klopp had left, and in his place was Arne Slot, former Feyenoord boss and relative unknown.

Rivals rejoiced, because Klopp was gone, and with him a legacy that would not easily be mimicked. Liverpool, you see, had fallen by the wayside under Brendan Rodgers and looked headed for more interminable years in the background of Europe’s biggest scene.

Well, here we are. The 2024/25 campaign has reached March and Liverpool find themselves in top spot, some 13 points clear at the top of the ladder, with Arsenal depleted and Manchester City all but deposed, startlingly below their usual lofty standards.

Liverpool have been immense. Mohamed Salah is a shoo-in for the Player of the Year awards at this point, but Liverpool are certainly not a one-man outfit.

Liverpool's best players in 24/25

In case you hadn’t heard, Salah’s doing rather well this season, scoring 30 goals and supplying 22 assists for his teammates across 38 matches. Three months of the season remain, by the way.

Mohamed Salah celebrates for Liverpool

In defence, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate have been impregnable at times. No team in the Premier League has kept more clean sheets than Liverpool’s 12.

The midfield has been the lifeforce, with Klopp’s 2023 summer rebuild paying dividends this season. Alexis Mac Allister’s mischievous and battling personality has seen him go as one of the unsung heroes of the campaign. But still, he’s very much integral.

Ryan Gravenberch’s rise from the murkly waters of untapped potential has been the glue which has kept Slot’s vision together. After efforts to sign Martin Zubimendi failed last summer, the silky and mobile midfielder was identified as an internal solution, pushed into a more disciplined and deeper central role. He’s been a revelation.

Then there’s Dominik Szoboszlai, who has been playing out of his skin in recent times and is now looking at the prized number ten position in English football.

Slot has hit the jackpot on Dominik Szoboszlai

This is Szoboszlai’s second season in Red, having left RB Leipzig for Merseyside in a deal worth £60m in 2023.

He had his ups and downs last term but has gone from strength to strength in Slot’s system, with his performances over the past few months leading content creator Asim Mahmood to describe him as an “absolute monster” and a “champion performer.”

Dominik Szoboszlai celebrates for Liverpool

Hailed as an “absolute engine” by journalist Bence Bocsak, the Hungary skipper is uncontainable at times, running at full throttle amid a forest of tired legs in late stages. He just doesn’t stop churning.

And now, with greater clinical output in the final third, Szoboszlai is being compared to a name that holds some weight at Liverpool: Jude Bellingham.

Jude Bellingham celebrates for Real Madrid

Bellingham was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool when he played for Borussia Dortmund, before the Reds opted out and focused on a more evenly spread central overhaul.

The Three Lions superstar, 21, might be one of the best players in the world but it’s hard to argue against FSG’s logic, with Gravenberch, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo all playing important roles.

And according to FBref, Szoboszlai’s form has actually put him in the same bracket as Bellingham, who is one of the deadliest midfielders in the game but also works with an indefatigable drive.

Both looking to get on the ball whenever they can and influence play, Szoboszlai’s energy outstrips his Los Blancos rival’s, though Bellingham does boast the superiority in goal involvements.

Szoboszlai can also defend when needed. Liverpool put themselves in an almost uncatchable position when beating Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday, and while the 23-year-old got his name on the scoresheet after bagging at the Etihad last weekend, he also won eight of his ten contested duels and made five tackles, as per Sofascore, further illustrating his complete nature.

Only one month ago, Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher said he wasn’t “Szoboszlai’s biggest fan,” acknowledging the player’s energy but raising questions over his clinical output.

This is fair enough. After 81 Liverpool appearances since signing, Szoboszlai has scored 14 goals and provided ten assists for his teammates, marking a goal contribution rate of 0.30 per game.

In the same timeframe since joining Real Madrid, Bellingham has clinched 58 goal involvements from 78 matches, a rate of 0.74 per fixture.

Jude Bellingham celebrates winning the Champions League

There’s a reason he’s regarded as “one of the best midfield talents in the world” by his colleague David Alaba, with CIES Football Observatory, the world’s leading platform in statistical football studies, recording that the £331k-per-week talent is currently valued at about £225m on the modern market.

This is staggering, and not a figure that Szoboszlai is likely to reach during his career. No shame in that, Dom.

However, it does act as a barometer of sorts that can determine the quality of player that Liverpool have on their hands. Quite simply, Liverpool’s robust and athletic number ten is proving himself to have the wide-ranging arsenal to inflict damage on opponents, control matches through technical distinction and indeed get stuck in

He has the full gamut, just like Bellingham. Liverpool have their own version of the English sensation, and they also have a dynamic midfield comprised of important parts.

FSG won’t rue their decision to look elsewhere back in 2023.

Not just Porro: Levy must ensure £35m flop isn't at Spurs next season

Whilst the injury crisis at Tottenham Hotspur this season has derailed their European chances, it has allowed numerous players to stake their claim for a regular starting role.

Djed Spence is one player who’s forced himself into Ange Postecoglou’s plans, forcing himself into the starting eleven, starring with regular minutes in the first team after previously being left in the dark.

The full-back has made 15 appearances in the Premier League to date, even being nominated for February’s Player of the Month – an indication of how impressive he’s been in recent weeks.

Tottenham star Djed Spence

It’s been a welcome surprise for the supporters, undoubtedly being the shining light in what has been a dismal period on the pitch, which has seen the Lilywhites drop to the bottom half of the table.

Such an emergence from Spence could potentially spell the end of one player’s time in North London, with Daniel Levy and Co potentially needing to offload the star in the summer should one side come knocking again.

Pedro Porro’s stats for Spurs in 2024/25

Right-back Pedro Porro has been a player who’s been inconsistent throughout 2024/25, struggling to live up to the expectations placed on him after his £39m move in 2023.

The Spaniard has been Postecoglou’s first choice on the right side of the backline but has failed to deliver in recent weeks – as seen in the draw against Bournemouth, misplacing his pass and being caught out of position for the opener.

However, despite his recent form, he’s previously been touted with a move to Real Madrid, with the Spanish giants previously interested in his services over the last couple of months.

The 25-year-old has been dribbled past 1.1 times per 90 in the Premier League this campaign, with his attacking nature often restricting him in defensive areas.

Given the emergence of Spence this season, the club could be tempted to cash in, potentially joining another player out of the exit door in North London.

Not just Porro:

After such a crisis, there’s no denying that additions are needed in the summer to prevent such a situation from happening again and offer the depth needed to boss Postecoglou.

However, if he is to make the additions he wants to improve the squad, he will need to offload multiple players, including Porro and midfielder Yves Bissouma.

The Malian joined Spurs back in the summer of 2022 from Brighton for £35m but has been an inconsistent figure in the side, often failing to deliver when called upon.

He’s been prone to a mistake, subsequently having to make fouls to prevent them being costly, as seen by his tally of six yellow cards – with his most recent coming in the draw against Bournemouth.

As a result, he’s struggled to nail down a regular starting role in the starting eleven, making just 13 league starts to date – with one analyst dubbing him “shambolic” due to his lack of quality at times.

Ange must look to sell him, with Bissouma currently halting the progress of midfielder Archie Gray, who joined the Lilywhites for £40m in the summer from Championship side Leeds United.

The 18-year-old has often featured in various defensive roles, covering multiple absentees due to the injury situation – doing an admirable job in the process, given it’s an unnatural role for the teenager.

With the returns of Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven over the last few games, the Aussie now has the opportunity to hand him minutes in his preferred position and allow him to showcase his talents.

Gray deserves the chance to play at the heart of the side given his versatility at his tender age, having the potential to be a key player for the club for many years to come.

However, he’s been unable to do so with Bissouma somehow still receiving more minutes ahead of him despite his own lack of form in the middle of the park.

At 29, he’s coming into the back end of his career, with the club needing to cash in on his services in the summer to allow Gray to thrive with frequent opportunities.

Tottenham Hotspur's YvesBissoumareacts after being substituted

It may seem a harsh call to sell him and Porro in the coming months, but ultimately, Ange needs to be ruthless if he is to turn around the current situation and lead the club to a long-awaited trophy.

Rain prevented a run chase for Sydney Sixers after big-hitting cameos from Colin Munro at the start and Michael Neser at the end powered Brisbane Heat to 147 for 6 off 13 overs at North Sydney Oval.Persistent drizzle before the game returned near the end of the Brisbane innings and did not stop in time to allow play to resume, even with a further reduction in overs.New Zealand import Munro had earlier wasted no time after the game started 65 minutes late, smashing 38 off 14 balls. The left hander belted six sixes in an explosive cameo, easily clearing the short boundaries of the ground as Heat bashed 29 off their two powerplay overs.Heat plundered seven sixes before hitting their first four but their innings lost momentum, with six falling for 50 runs once Munro fell.Neser (45 not out off 18) wrested back the initiative as rain fell again, hitting five fours and three sixes In a quickfire seventh-wicket stand of 56 with Nathan McSweeney.Munro hit sixes off two of the first three balls of the innings off Ben Dwarshuis and then smacked legside sixes off successive balls in overs from Sean Abbott and Steve O’Keefe.Veteran spinner O’Keefe, back after a hamstring injury, got Munro to glove a reverse sweep up to wicketkeeper Josh Philippe to bring his innings to an end.Wickets then fell at regular intervals, with Sam Billings falling to Hayden Kerr, and O’Keefe adding the scalps of Jimmy Peirson and Josh Brown, the hero of last Sunday’s game between the two sides. Each team takes a point from the first no result of the competition.

Jamie Smith falls short but Surrey reinforce commanding position over Middlesex

The 22-year-old keeper batter made 97 as Surrey look for victory against a dogged Middlesex

Vithushan Ehantharajah13-May-2023

Jamie Smith fell agonisingly short of his century•Getty Images for Surrey CCC

Surrey 380 (Smith 97, Burns 88) lead Middlesex 209 (Robson 76, Malan 66, Worrall 5-48) and 128 for 3 (Holden 42*, Clark 1-3) by 43 runsThe weather apps lied to the 3,000-odd people who turned up at the Kia Oval on Saturday. It was not sunny, nor was it warm. The “real feel” overshot by about 10 degrees. Of the things Saturday promised, this was the biggest lie. It was also the only one.Coming into day three of this encounter, the scope was of Surrey asserting dominance or Middlesex showing some mongrel. By the end, both had played out to a point. A first-innings lead of 171 was established, then whittled down to 43 in 41 overs of dogged resistance that certainly raised the temperature under the collars of those out on the field. This London Derby always tends to surprise with its ill-feeling, and this was no different. Surrey had to work harder than they’d have liked for three second-innings wickets and the atmosphere out in the middle was gnarly, in the best way possible. This stuff still matters to these players. We’ll get a reminder of just how much on Sunday when tensions will rise a little more. That Surrey control the match and the environment around it was primarily down to Jamie Smith extending his knock from 55 to 97. Watchful at first, particularly in the face of some suffocating bowling, typified by the impressive Ethan Bamber, he expanded his repertoire to what looked a certain hundred.Alas, number seven will have to wait a little longer, but the 42 runs added was the foundation for a doubling of Surrey’s overnight score to 380. The 22-year-old set a new season-high at least, beating his 88 against Warwickshire a couple of weeks ago. There was palpable dismay at his dismissal, particularly as the crowd swelled as he approached what would have been a second century this year. The first came in Sri Lanka for England Lions, and alerted the rest of the country that this kid is going places. As such, an “I was there when Jamie Smith carried Surrey” was replaced with a “I was there when Luke Hollman tied Jamie Smith down and eventually got him to york himself into a stumping”.From Middlesex’s perspective, it was an overdue dismissal. Smith was dropped on 24, then again on 55 off the last ball of day two. Even this morning, there were enough plays and misses to wonder if Smith might finish Saturday winning Eurovision. Most, if not all of that angst came from the youngster’s end because wickets were coming pretty regularly at the other. Tim Murtagh needed just six deliveries to take out Foakes, thanks to an exceptional catch by John Simpson standing up to the stumps. The Middlesex wicketkeeper spent most of the morning with his helmet on, making everything a little more claustrophobic for the batters. Will Jacks didn’t seem bothered at first, standing in his crease to lift Bamber over wide mid-on for six to level Middlesex’s first-innings score of 209 for the loss of just four wickets.Bamber would get his revenge, Jacks neither forward nor back with Simpson breathing down his neck, allowing enough room between bat and pad for a delivery to nip through and take off stump. Similar indeterminate footwork did for Jordan Clark, slapping Ryan Higgins to backward point.Upon Smith’s departure, the lead was only 74 but a long tail delivered as the final four contributed 101 with the bat. Abbott and Worrall were the main grantors, albeit in wildly different styles. Abbott was prim and proper; attacking no doubt, particularly as he danced down the track and slapped Higgins into the stands in front of the Pavilion on the stroke of lunch, but in a calm, calculated manner.Emerging after the break, Abbott took the lead from 82 to 131 before falling short of a second half-century of the season, inadvertently guiding a delivery down onto his stumps. In tagged Worrall for something far more agricultural, clearing his front leg to smack Higgins down the ground first ball, then heaving a six over mid-on and smiting a drive on the up for four through cover in successive deliveries of the allrounder’s next over.Roland-Jones eventually tamed Worrall with a short delivery through to the keeper, after the Australian had seemingly found a remedy with a guide over the top of the slips. A swat through to Simpson (standing back) brought an engaging innings to a close. With 49 overs to go against a visiting line-up that had lost nine wickets inside 21.1 overs two days ago, thoughts turn to a possible Sunday off with an Innings victory. Sam Robson and Mark Stoneman knuckled down, getting through a 30-minute spell before tea, ensuring at the very least Middlesex will fight another day.The openers returned with the same patient approach, not quite taking it to Surrey’s experienced, seam-laden attack but certainly doing enough to frustrate them into ball complaints. Midway through the 13th over, those were heeded and a replacement called for.And yep, you guessed it – wickets followed. Though there was no sense Middlesex were undone just by a change of Dukes, they were certainly unlucky. Not so much for Robson’s dismissal, snicked off by the impressive Abbott, but certainly for Stoneman’s.On 28, he went for a wild square drive to Gus Atkinson, as the ball shot through to Foakes. It turned out the ball attributed to the nick came through bat hitting the floor, with replays showing a clear gap between bat and ball.Of course, there is no DRS, though the presence of Sky’s camera meant Atkinson’s front foot was checked via stump cam. There had been a handful of high-def replays of potential stumpings and run-outs, with another coming later on when Max Holden was almost seen off for 28 with a direct hit from Rory Burns. Nevertheless, it did feel an odd ad-hoc overstepping of the usual guidelines the County Championship is played under. Then again, if you’ve got the technology there, why not use it? They did so again to check Clark’s front foot – this time from a parallel camera – when he trimmed off Eskinazi. It felt a shame they didn’t raise the stump mics in the process, as Surrey and Eskinazi exchanged a few words before a second send-off after the delivery’s legitimacy was confirmed. You could sense the host’s frustration, which they perhaps have themselves to blame for exacerbating after Jacks gave Holden a life on 18, dropping a simple catch at second slip from Kemar Roach. Burns then pulled up the umpires for allowing Holden and Simpson to walk off after 38 overs. The light was bad, but Burns seemed to suggest there was no communication that Surrey’s pace quintet were pushing their luck until Worrall went short to Holden. Burns coaxed the batters back to the middle with the offering of pace-off. A couple of overs of Jacks’ off-spin sandwiching one of medium pace from Ryan Patel later, stumps was officially called.
