Graeme Swann to mentor England Lions' spinners

Former England offspinner will travel to UAE for first week of Lions training camp

Graeme Swann will spend the next week working with three of England’s best young spinners in the UAE after his success as Trent Rockets’ spin-bowling coach in the Hundred.Swann’s involvement with England has been limited since his sudden retirement from international cricket in 2013 and he has often expressed his frustration that he has not spent more time working with young spinners developing through the English system.Related

Rehan Ahmed 'mentally ready' if fast-track development leads to England call

But he was a popular member of support staff in the Hundred this year, working closely with Samit Patel, Matt Carter, Rashid Khan and Tabraiz Shamsi as the Rockets won the title, and ECB announced on Friday that Swann would spend a week working as a mentor during the Lions’ three-week training camp, which starts on Sunday. There are three frontline spin bowlers involved in the Lions training group in Rehan Ahmed, the Leicestershire legspinning allrounder, Sussex offspinner Jack Carson, and Nottinghamshire allrounder Liam Patterson-White, while Dan Lawrence is also an occasional offspinner with three Test wickets to his name.Ian Bell, Swann’s former England team-mate, is also part of the Lions coaching staff and will work with the training group’s batters, along with Surrey assistant coach Jim Troughton. Jon Lewis and Durham’s Neil Killeen will work with the seamers and Kent’s Min Patel will be the main spin-bowling coach.”In Ian Bell and Graeme Swann, we have two people with so much international experience,” Mo Bobat, the ECB’s performance director who will lead the tour, said. “It’s brilliant to have them as part of the group, and I know everyone will be looking forward to working with them.”It’s a really exciting staff team for a trip that I think will be of huge benefit to all of our players. There’s a wide range of experience to call upon, from across the game, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone come together this weekend.”

ANÁLISE: Coletivo funciona, e Corinthians assegura pontos preciosos

Leeds now considering signing £5m Sunderland star and "interesting" striker

Leeds United are now considering signing a £5 million Sunderland player and an “interesting” striker in the summer transfer window alongside their ongoing interest in Cameron Archer, according to a new report.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites still have 13 games left to play in this Championship season, but with a seven-point gap ahead of third place Burnley, attention is slowly turning towards next season. Leeds obviously can’t go ahead with the plans yet until it is confirmed what league they are going to be in, but once it is, they will have things in place to make their move in the transfer market.

Leeds reporter shares development over permanent Manor Solomon transfer

Talk over the future of Solomon at Leeds has gathered pace in recent days.

ByBrett Worthington Feb 19, 2025

The future of Manor Solomon has become a topic this week, with the player said to be happy at Elland Road and Leeds also happy with how his loan has gone.

The winger has scored seven goals and assisted seven in the Championship this season, and it has resulted in talk about the Whites signing him on a permanent basis. However, a Leeds reporter has revealed that Leeds are still undecided about whether to make Solomon’s move a permanent one, as several factors still need to be looked at.

Southampton'sKyleWalker-Petersin action with Tottenham Hotspur's Djed Spence

As well as weighing up Solomon’s future, Leeds are also keeping an eye on Kyle Walker-Peters, as he is set to become a free transfer at the end of the season. It looks unlikely that he will sign a new contract at Southampton.

Leeds considering signing £5m Sunderland star and Ivory Coast striker

There are now two new players joining the Whites’ transfer shortlist, as according to TEAMtalk, Leeds are interested in signing Wilson Isidor and Evann Guessand from Sunderland and Nice, respectively.

The report states that the Championship leaders will look to bring in a new striker in the summer, with Southampton’s Archer still a top target. However, even if the club signs Archer, they could still look to add a more defined number nine given the youngster can be used right across the front three.

It is reported that Isidor has been shortlisted by Leeds, as he continued his excellent campaign by netting his 12th Championship goal against the Whites on Monday night. Isidor is not the only option for Daniel Farke’s side, as they are also keeping a close eye on Guessand, who has nine Ligue 1 goals to his name this season.

Both players are very young but have proven this season that they are clinical goalscorers. Isidor joined the Black Cats on loan originally in the summer, but in the January transfer window, it was made into a permanent transfer, with Sunderland reportedly paying Zenit St. Petersburg 6 million euros (£5 million).

Meanwhile, Guessand, who has been dubbed “very interesting” by analyst Ben Mattinson, joined Nice in 2014 and in the last two seasons has become a regular in the starting XI, chipping in with goals and earning his first Ivory Coast cap.

Both players are having very productive campaigns, and Leeds need to add more firepower to their forward line, as Patrick Bamford continues to struggle with injuries, meaning Joel Piroe is heavily relied upon.

The concern would be that Isidor or Guessand haven’t played in the Premier League before, but they could be two low-key signings who give Leeds a different edge in the Premier League, should they secure promotion.

James Anderson feels the rare thrill of the unknown ahead of Pakistan Test bow

Veteran of 2005 tour prepares to play first Test in country in 19-year international career

Vithushan Ehantharajah29-Nov-2022

If you’ve been paying even vague attention, you’ll have heard that James Anderson is the only member of this England touring party to have played international cricket in Pakistan prior to this winter.Back in the winter of 2005, a younger, sprightlier but no less downbeat Anderson was part of the squad that last played Test cricket in the country. He did not get on the park during the three-match series, which the hosts took 2-0, but did take part in the subsequent ODI series, finishing with seven wickets. That included 4 for 48 in the final match – a consolation win with England losing 3-2 overall – at Rawalpindi, the venue for the first Test of this series.Given his lack of red-ball action on that tour and the time between visits, the 40-year-old Anderson is reluctant to play the role of wise old sage when it comes to predicting how things could pan out. Heading into the first Test, he and the rest of the team are happy to take cues from the conditions, while maintaining Brendon McCullum’s assertion earlier in the week that, however things pan out, a draw is not on the agenda.”No, not at all,” Anderson said, when asked if he had anything to pass on. “Seventeen years is a long time. It would be wrong if I said ‘the pitch is going to play like this, or this is what to expect’. It’s a completely different team we’re playing against, completely different conditions.”It’s about adapting when we get out there. We talk a little bit about the opposition but mainly concentrate on what we do well – that’s what we did in the summer. We don’t know how it’s going to play. Traditionally it is flat. We’ve seen Tests in recent times – the Australia game was very flat. It ended in a draw. We’ve got a captain and coach that don’t want draws. We’re not playing for draws. We’ll come out and try to win the game – we might have to be creative in how we do that.”The extent of England’s adaptation will be dictated by the varying conditions over the next month, and indeed over this first Rawalpindi Test match. England have noticed there has been dew for their morning training sessions, which will no doubt play a part early on given the 10am starts on match days, adding a bit of juice in the air and moisture into the pitch. Both of which bring Anderson to the front and centre of their plans.England have also been concentrating on honing their reverse-swing skills in anticipation of what might lie ahead. The training camp in Abu Dhabi last week saw them experiment with an assortment of balls worn to varying degrees. Anderson had also been fine-tuning his technique with the Lions in Dubai since the start of November. Both he and Ben Stokes will be the main proponents of the craft this week, with Mark Wood out recovering from injury. However, Anderson doesn’t expect it will play too big a part in the first Test.Related

“Just looking at the pitch out here and the outfield, it looks quite lush so whether reverse will play a huge part here, I’m not sure, at this particular ground,” he said. “But we will try and cover all bases and make sure we’ve got options, if and when we need them.”As Anderson approaches the 20th anniversary of his England debut, this Test bow in Pakistan represents a new and final frontier. It will be the ninth country he has graced in the format, and even coming into this series with 175 caps and a seam bowler’s record haul of 667 wickets, there is a palpable excitement from the usually reserved Lancastrian.”Firstly, it’s amazing to be back here,” he said. “I want to say thank you on behalf of, not just myself, but the whole team for the welcome we’ve had. We know how many cricket fans there are in Pakistan and how much they love and support, not just Pakistani cricket, but cricket in general around the world. I’ve not played a Test match here so I’m delighted to have the chance to be able to play here.As for who that first red-ball victim in Pakistan might be, Anderson claims he isn’t fussed, even if he recognises that one man in particular is likely to be a key adversary in the days ahead.”We are well aware how important a wicket Babar is for Pakistan, being the captain, as well as I’d say their best player. Yes, we will give him attention, but also we need to focus on the other guys as well because they’re very strong.”And I don’t care who it is, as long as I get a wicket and try and help the team towards a win. That’s what we’ve come here for – we want to win the series, so that’s our main focus.”

Sold for £3m, now worth 2070% more: Chelsea may rue selling Nkunku upgrade

Chelsea have been known for having one of the very best academies in England, as seen by their triumphs in the FA Youth Cup over the last couple of years.

The Blues have won the title a total of nine times, with only Manchester United winning more since its formation, handing the first team a conveyor belt of young talent.

Enzo Maresca is the current manager to be the beneficiary of the youth system, with youngster Levi Colwill the player who’s benefited the most, featuring in 25 Premier League matches to date.

Chelsea defender Levi Colwill

The centre-back has been a regular at the heart of the defence but also provides a threat in attacking areas, getting himself on the scoresheet in the 4-0 win over Southampton on Tuesday.

However, despite the quality of the players coming through the ranks, Todd Boehly has splashed the cash at Stamford Bridge, dropping over £1.2b on new players, including one player who’s struggled in England.

Todd Boehly’s biggest Chelsea signings

Since taking over in 2022, the American businessman hasn’t held back in providing various managers with the ammunition to succeed at the Bridge.

Moises Caicedo arrived in the summer of 2023, costing a mammoth £115m from Brighton & Hove Albion – a fee that broke the record for the highest transfer fee spent in the history of English football.

Moises Caicedo celebrates for Chelsea

However, the Ecuadorian has proved to be a superb addition for the Blues since his big-money move, featuring 78 times, scoring twice, including a phenomenal effort from the halfway line against Bournemouth last season.

Enzo Fernández is another player who cost a small fortune, setting Boehly back £106.8m in January 2023, and struggling to make an immediate impact in West London.

The Argentine has managed to resurrect his Blies career, becoming a key member of Maresca’s side in 2024/25, registering four goals and eight assists in all competitions this season – playing a key role in their Conference League success to date.

However, the pair could’ve been joined by one player who has outperformed another first-team star whose value has skyrocketed and is now valued more than another big-money addition.

The former Chelsea player who’s worth more than Nkunku

Christopher Nkunku is another player who has cost big money over the last few years, joining in a £52m deal from RB Leipzig during the summer of 2023.

However, he’s since struggled to nail down a regular starting role, usually relying on cup action and minutes off the bench to feature in Maresca’s side.

The injury to Nicolas Jackson has allowed for a string of starts over the last few weeks, but he has only managed to notch one goal and one assist in his last four outings.

As a result, the club may have been better off keeping hold of striker Dominic Solanke, with now-Tottenham Hotspur striker previously being on the club’s books as a youngster.

The Englishman would only make one first-team appearance for the Blues, featuring for a total of 17 minutes, before leaving for Liverpool in a measly £3m deal during Antonio Conte’s reign in 2017.

Fast-forward to 2025, after a successful four and a half years at Bournemouth, fellow Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur decided to fork out £65m for his signature in the summer transfer window.

Such a fee has seen a rise of 2070% on the fee the Blues sold him for eight years ago, potentially offloading a talisman who’s been dubbed “clinical” by one talent scout.

In his first few months across the capital at Spurs, the 27-year-old has managed 11 goals and six assists in all competitions throughout 2024/25, outperforming Nkunku in numerous key areas.

Given the club’s hunt for a new attacker over the last few years, Solanke may have been the solution to their ongoing issue, especially when considering the stats he’s produced in comparison to the Frenchman.

However, their loss appears to be Spurs’ gain, with the forward having the ability to catapult the side to success in the next few years, further adding more pain to the Blues after allowing him to depart.

South Africa's bowlers may need to help themselves to have enough runs

“Partnerships are key for us and the bowlers know their role…with top-order batters,” coach Malibongwe Maketa said

Andrew McGlashan15-Dec-20220:50

Maketa: Warner has always brought a lot of intensity against us, we expect nothing different

South Africa will need to be greater than the sum of their batting parts if they are to challenge Australia across the three-Test series which could have a huge bearing on who reaches the World Test Championship final in June. While there is an expectation that the visitors will be able to go toe-to-toe with their pace attack – albeit one light on experience in Australia – they will need every run they can muster from what looks a fragile order leaning heavily on Dean Elgar and Temba Bavuma, the latter with concerns over a niggling elbow injury and off the back of a T20 World Cup where he faced huge scrutiny.South Africa’s batting problems are not new. On the tour of England earlier this year, where they went 1-0 up before losing 2-1, they managed just one half-century in the three games. Since 2019, only West Indies and Ireland have a lower collective batting average and only Ireland, Afghanistan and Zimbabwe have made few centuries.Related

“If you look the way we’ve played in the past, our bowlers have allowed us to get into good positions by getting 350-360,” interim coach Malibongwe Maketa said. “So from that point of view partnerships are key for us and the bowlers know their role…with top-order batters and that has worked well for us.”The victory against England at Lord’s is a model of what Maketa was referring to. On that occasion Keshav Maharaj (41 at No. 8) and Anrich Nortje (28 not out at No. 10) made important runs to stretch South Africa’s lead. Maharaj is averaging a very handy 22.75 this year in Tests. But it’s the player who batted at No. 6 that day, Marco Jansen, and made 48 who is looming as the big hope to offer balance to the side. If South Africa are to play five frontline bowlers at the Gabba – and Maketa’s hint was that would be the route – he will likely have to take on a role that is probably a little much at the moment, but if they want to hit Australia with their big four quicks and have Maharaj in the XI it looks like the only way.Marco Jansen has a big role to play, in every sense•Getty Images

“We are growing him in terms of his all-round ability and he has the ability to do something special with the bat,” Maketa said. “From our point of view he’s a work in progress and we know he could and he is capable of being part of at least two fifty partnerships.”We are going to have to back our batters to score the runs and our bowlers to take the wickets.”And with a Test bowling average of 18.59 it would appear very difficult not to play Jansen for his bowling, although South Africa did find a way to do that against England at Old Trafford when they opted for two spinners.”It’s been a sharp rise,” Maketa said. “We know for a fact that people around the world have taken note and now coming up in this series it will be a different challenge, people have seen enough of him to come up with different plans. But when it comes to his performances we are very pleased because he gives us variety we need for our attack. In terms of pace and height and the areas he hits, it sets him apart in terms of a lot of other left armers.”Kagiso Rabada is the only one of South Africa’s quicks with Test experience in Australia – he was their leading wicket-taker with 15 at 22.40 in 2016-17 – and he will have an important mentoring role to play.”He’s still young, but in terms of experience and having been here before it’s something that a lot of the other bowlers are using to lean on him for information,” Maketa said. “We’ve been quite clear in terms of lengths we want to hit, if you look at the Wanderers it offers the same, more or less, where you can get carried away with the sexy bounce and be ineffective so we’ve been working hard on making sure we hit the fuller length and making the batter play.”
