Arsenal ready to approve conditional January exit as reps travel for talks

Arsenal are ready to give the green-light for a squad member to leave the club in January as representatives travel abroad for talks, but the transfer will only be approved by Mikel Arteta’s side on one crucial condition.

Arsenal cruise to 3-0 win over Monaco in the Champions League

The north Londoners enjoyed a terrific night back in the Champions League on Wednesday, cruising to a 3-0 win over AS Monaco and ending their barren run without a goal from open play since late November.

Arsenal believe £352k-per-week striker is Arteta's "ideal" next signing

The Gunners are convinced he could “raise the team’s level”.

It was a convincing display by the Premier League title hopefuls against elite opposition, with Bukayo Saka’s brace and Kai Havertz’s neat little finish at the near post cementing a vital three points for Arsenal on Europe’s biggest stage.

Arsenal could’ve had many more, with out-of-form striker Gabriel Jesus squandering two golden chances in on goal, but it was a very positive night for Arteta who watched his side create plenty of openings against a team challenging Marseille and PSG for the Ligue 1 title right now.

That being said, Arteta sent a clear message to his players about being more clinical in front of goal.

“We have a massive responsibility,” said Arteta on Arsenal’s conversion rate.

“I cannot kick the ball but we can coach them, we can teach them and sometimes they have to take a step back as well, it’s a decision they have to take. They cannot be thinking about what they have to do, what we’ve told them as well. We try to provide the right information and right tools so they can understand the defence, understand the keeper a lot of things that we work on, and after that it’s their execution. It’s a difficult thing to do in football but they have a lot of talent to deliver that.”

Monaco had chances of their own to get on the scoresheet, but luckily for the Gunners, previously out-of-favour centre-back Jakub Kiwior slotted next to William Saliba nicely, with the home side keeping them at bay.

The Poland international has come in for Gabriel Magalhaes in recent weeks, starting against both Man United and Fulham, with Kiwior proving a very useful asset in the absence of both Gabriel and Riccardo Calafiori.

Kiwior has been linked with a move to Italy regularly, and you’d think his new-found place in Arteta’s starting line-up would nullify those claims, yet reports continue to surface.

Arsenal ready to green-light January exit for Jakub Kiwor on one condition

However, despite his importance recently, Italian newspaper Il Mattino claims that Arsenal are ready to green-light a loan move for Kiwior in January – but it is conditional.

The outlet, via Calcio Napoli, writes that agents have travelled to Italy for talks this week to “lay the foundations” of a potential transfer, with Serie A title contenders Napoli looking to reinforce Antonio Conte’s backline for the second half of 24/25.

Arsenal “will say yes” to Kiwior joining Napoli on a temporary deal, but the deal must include an obligation to buy the 24-year-old outright, linked to him making a certain number of appearances under Conte.

In any case, Kiwior’s potential departure to Napoli is described as entirely plausible, and it will be interesting to see if Arsenal would sign a replacement for him in the winter.

The end for Bamford: Leeds plot move for star who’s "a beast on the pitch"

Leeds United look in a strong place to end their stint in the Championship by the end of the season, with boss Daniel Farke doing a phenomenal job in charge.

His side were ransacked during the summer window, arguably losing their three most important players in Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville and Archie Gray for a combined £105m before add-ons.

Despite such departures, the German has led the Whites to second place after the first 21 matches, sitting three points off current leaders Sheffield United.

However, despite the club having the best goalscoring record of any side in the division, the hierarchy are targeting added reinforcements in January to bolster their promotion ambitions.

As a result, they’ve identified one player who could dramatically improve Farke’s options at the top end of the pitch should they complete a deal for his services.

Leeds United targeting European star in January

According to the Daily Mail, Leeds are eyeing a potential move for Maccabi Tel Aviv striker Dor Turgeman ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

The 21-year-old has impressed in recent months, scoring nine times in 21 matches this campaign, including four goals in the Europa League to date, including one against Spanish giants Real Sociedad.

The report fails to mention a potential price tag for the Israeli talisman, but does claim that Farke’s side have been scouting him over the last few months ahead of a potential swoop.

However, Turgeman has a valuation of €3.5m (£2.9m) as per Transfermarkt, but it’s highly unlikely that the youngster would be available for that sort of fee given his recent goalscoring exploits.

Turgeman can also operate off either wing, making him a versatile option, with his relentless pressing nature making him an excellent talent in the final third for the club as they enter the final months of the 2024/25 campaign.

Such a move could end one player’s spell at Elland Road, also providing an upgrade on the star and supercharging the Whites’ promotion ambitions.

Why Turgeman signing could be the end for Bamford

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford will forever be a name that the supporters will cherish after his goalscoring record during their return to the Premier League during the 2020/21 campaign.

The Englishman scored 17 times during the Whites’ return to the top flight, finishing as the fourth top scorer in the division – leading to a maiden England call-up under Gareth Southgate.

However, he’s massively struggled in recent years, scoring the same amount of goals as he did in the aforementioned year, but this time over four campaigns rather than just the one.

Injuries have restricted him to just nine appearances in 2024/25 to date, with Turgeman providing the quality that they have been desiring at the top end of the pitch in recent weeks.

The Maccabi Tel Aviv talisman, who’s been dubbed “a beast on the pitch” by current boss Zarko Lazetic, has produced some impressive numbers, as demonstrated by his goalscoring tallies.

In the Europa League, the 21-year-old has completed 50% of his dribbles, whilst also winning 21 duels, showcasing he can star in a variety of roles, creating opportunities for teammates whilst doing the dirty work for the side.

Such figures would make him the perfect striker for Farke’s current 4–2-3-1 system, handing the club that added attacking threat as they look to return to the Premier League.

However, on the flip side, such a transfer could spell the end of Bamford’s stint in Yorkshire, especially considering his hefty wages, which see him pocket a staggering £70k-per-week.

It would be a sad closure to his time at Elland Road, but ultimately, football is a brutal industry with the Englishman potentially needing to be sacrificed if they are to complete a deal for Turgeman.

Normal service resumes as Nottinghamshire ease to victory at home

Duckett shows fine touch with twin fifties as Broad bags four second-innings wickets against Worcestershire

David Hopps30-Apr-2022

Ben Duckett scored twin fifties•Getty Images

Normal service has been resumed as Nottinghamshire, beaten in their first home match of the season by Glamorgan, made it six wins in seven at Trent Bridge with a five-wicket defeat of Worcestershire. The prospect of a lengthy rain delay on the final day heightened their anxiety to chase down a target of 233 in 56 overs by the close and they timed it to perfection as Joe Clarke on-drove the winning boundary from the last ball to leave recourse to an extra half-hour unnecessary. The choicest innings came from Ben Duckett, whose 78 from 85 balls had almost but not quite broken the chase when he hacked at a ball from Charlie Morris and was caught at the wicket, a puff of dust from the surface offering him an alibi for his error.Duckett can be an exhilarating watch, a figure of barrel-shaped invention. That barrel could be full of real ale, frothing and intoxicating, blissful in its belief that anything was possible, unaware of the potential for disaster. Josh Baker, an 18-year-old left-arm spinner playing only his eighth first-class match, has probably faced no more untameable opponent, enduring cuts, sweeps and reverse sweeps from a batter who is addicted to adventure whenever a spinner comes on.In such a frame of mind, it is possible to understand what England saw when they chose Duckett, then at Northants, for the 2016 tour of India. The gamble failed – “I got worked over by one of the best spinners the game has ever seen” he once said of his agonies against Ravi Ashwin. He has rarely entered England’s thoughts since and he is unlikely to enter them again soon as the pressing need is at the top of the order, but he now has a century and four fifties from his last five innings and is arguably in his best touch since those heady days.Batting is often something of an escapade for Notts, who can be careless with their talent. They are awash with character, alive with strokeplay and their flaws are always lurking just below the surface. They are not the sort of side to look at an iffy weather forecast, mutter “you can only control the controllables” and leave their run chase to Sunday and hours of peering at leaden skies from dressing room windows. They are all the more welcome for that.Worcestershire, spearheaded by the admirable Ed Barnard, fought valiantly, but ultimately, they were found wanting. They deserved better luck than to be a man down because of an injury to Dillon Pennington. A Baker’s dozen would normally have been too many, but he had to bowl 19 overs and went for 90, recovering his poise a little after Duckett’s dismissal, although Jack Haynes did not welcome his half-tracker which meant he took a painful blow from Clarke at short leg.Worcestershire needed new-ball wickets and they managed one with their fourth ball when Morris had Ben Slater caught low at first slip. The indefatigable Barnard, who followed up more than five hours at the crease with 15 overs, squeezed one past Haseeb Hameed’s outside edge to clip off stump, took a fine catch at slip to intercept Lyndon James’ reverse sweep (note to James: don’t reverse-lap when the man who can do no wrong is stood at slip) and he was still passing the outside edge on occasions as Clarke assembled his first half-century of the season to guide Notts home.Neither had Barnard quite finished with Nottinghamshire with the bat. His unbeaten 101 on the second day had organised Worcestershire resistance that few expected, and he extended that to a career-best 163 from 310 balls, unconquered to the last as Worcestershire’s innings finally came to grief on 339. The target felt very achievable but with the potential to be messed up.Barnard did not give a chance, although he did pack an over’s worth of misjudgements into a single one from Dane Paterson, on 120, when his thought processes briefly went haywire.Stuart Broad finished up bowling 27 overs, which was probably a heavier workload than he would have preferred in his first of three matches designed to win back his England place. Figures of 4 for 72 in 27 overs will do him no harm. He quickly dislodged Jamie Cox with an excellent ball that bounced and left him before resorting to a succession of wicket-taking theories and unconventional fields which owed something to the nature of the surface, but also a little perhaps to his own impatience.”To be impatient is to be hooked on the future,” said the American psychiatrist, Gerald Jampolsky, which seems appropriate to Broad, whose priority is to be in mint condition for the Lord’s Test. That said, he doesn’t appear to be the sort who gives much credence to Californian self-help books.

Shan Masood drives Derbyshire as top billing is shared in notable double-header

England Physical Disability take the stage in breakout moment for sport’s inclusivity

For most of the spectators at New Road today, cricket meant the Rapids and the Falcons; it meant Dwayne Bravo, Pat Brown and Ed Barnard; it meant hoping that the home side could respond to Moeen Ali’s comments the previous evening when the skipper had described his side’s performance at Northampton as “embarrassing”. Those supporters did not get the response they wanted. The team that have contested two Blast finals in the past five seasons cannot take a short-form trick this season. This was Worcestershire’s seventh defeat in eight games and their vain pursuit of 169 revealed all the maggoty doubt that infects sides on a desperate streak.None of which pays sufficient credit to a Derbyshire team who have won four of their eight T20 games this season and who were able to drop three seemingly vital catches yet still win the game very comfortably as Mattie McKiernan’s leg-spin engineered a collapse that saw the Rapids lose six wickets for 27 runs in 34 balls. Derbyshire loyalists watching McKiernan bowl Jack Haynes for 35 and then add the wickets of Kashif Ali and Ben Cox will recall this evening fondly. Their side’s chances of reaching Edgbaston on July 16 still have all their vital signs in place. But the perspective of those at the evening’s cricket had not been shared by everyone on the ground today. Consider, for example, the various standpoints of 80 schoolchildren from the SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disability) cohort who got the opportunity to practise their cricket with the England Physical Disability team on the outfield this morning prior to the EPD’s T20 game against the Lord’s Taverners this afternoon. That contest was the first part of a double-header which concluded with this evening’s match and it was the first time that a disability team had provided the prelude to a Vitality Blast contest. And who is to say which, in the long run, will be seen as the more important game? The spectators who thronged the Diglis End this perfect June evening expressed a natural preference, of course. They enjoyed seeing their attack contain Derbyshire to 168 for 7, with even that total swelled by two sixes, one driven, one ramped, in Brown’s final over. But they were mightily less enamoured of the loss of three prime wickets in the powerplay, especially as they included Moeen, who was leg before first ball to a fine delivery from Mark Watt, and Colin Munro, who was brilliantly stumped by Brooke Guest off Wayne Madsen when the batsman idly lifted his foot.”Teams that lose three wickets in the powerplay do not win T20 matches”; so runs the Confucianesque analect of the bright young analysts. And the predictions of the cloistered data-hounds were proved accurate once again. Languishing on 46 for three after their first six overs, Worcestershire looked to have recovered when Haynes and Brett D’Oliveira put on 65 in 41 balls and Derbyshire’s twice dropping D’Oliveira seemed to encapsulate a change in the game’s weather. It did no such thing. Haynes tried to pull a ball from McKiernan but was bowled, probably off the pad, and from that moment, Shan Masood’s well-drilled attack never surrendered a speck of advantage. Hayden Kerr, Alex Hughes and Mark Watt all conceded less than 30 runs from their four-over spells and D’Oliveira’s 43-ball 55 was the only sweetener for a home crowd who have four more home games left to play – or fear – in this year’s Blast. Unsurprisingly, the reaction of social media has been pretty harsh, which is not unusual at any of the counties who are used to excelling in this format. The greater the emotional investment, the greater the perceived betrayal. And yet… and yet…for those who thought the support act was top of the bill today, it was important the Physical Disability cricketers honoured the occasion and they achieved this with something to spare, defeating the Taverners by 60 runs. Liam Thomas made 68 in his side’s 168 for three before Callum Flynn’s seven-man attack restricted their opponents to 108 for nine. And the broader theme of inclusion and diversity was maintained when Worcestershire gave a debut to 24-year-old Kashif, who was only signed on a short-term contract yesterday and whose wide-ranging cricketing education has included fine performances for the South Asian Cricket Foundation.Unfortunately for the debutant, the highlight of his match was probably the catch he took at point off Moeen to get rid of Hayden Kerr for only 4; thereafter, he was left, like the rest of those at Worcester, to watch Masood make the 47-ball 65 that provided the foundation of his team’s total. Yesterday, the Pakistani opener became the quickest Derbyshire batsman to score 1000 runs in all formats when he reached the landmark in his sixteenth innings. This evening, he struck seven fine fours and a sublime six over long-off in the latest example of his commitment to his side’s cause. And the further good news for the county’s supporters is that Masood is staying until the end of a season that has not reached its halfway point. There is still everything to play for, although it might not seem like that to Worcestershire’s supporters tonight.

West Brom want 3-4-1-2 manager who’s beat them twice to replace Corberan

West Brom are now reportedly interested in hiring an “unbelievable” manager to come in and replace Carlos Corberan in The Hawthorns hot seat.

West Brom eyeing Corberan successor

The Corberan era with the Baggies has officially come to an end, with the Spaniard opting to take charge of La Liga side Valencia instead, in a job he ultimately found too difficult to turn down.

Now, it’s a case of West Brom finding the right person to come in and replace their former boss, ensuring that they remain right in the Championship promotion mix until the end of the season.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

Plenty of names have already been mooted as potential options for the Baggies, with Liverpool first-team coach Johnny Heitinga a leading candidate to take charge and guide them to future successes. Whether the Dutchman is willing to leave Anfield so soon after coming in alongside Arne Slot remains to be seen, though.

Meanwhile, a reunion with Tony Mowbray has also been mooted, with the veteran manager out of work since leaving Birmingham City due to health reasons. It would be a decision that may divide the supporters, with some seeing him as a safe pair of hands and others maybe wanting a younger boss brought in.

West Brom keen on "unbelievable" manager

According to The Boot Room‘s Graeme Bailey, West Brom are interested in making Mark Robins their next manager, following his surprise recent sacking by Coventry City.

He is “ready to return to management” and the Baggies are in the mix to hire him, as they look to ensure that they nail their next appointment. He has been described by a fellow contemporary as “the best manager in this league”.

Robins stands out as a good option for West Brom, with many left shocked at his recent firing, considering the job he did at Coventry, guiding them into the Championship and then the playoff final in the 2022/23 season.

Only a penalty shootout defeat to Luton Town prevented him from inspiring his side into the Premier League, and Shaun Derry has waxed lyrical over the job he did in the past, saying:

“You look at some of the teams in and around the top six, you know, there’s a lot of pressure on them teams, of course, to get into the Premier League, the promised land, it’s massive. But if you think about the job that Mark Robins has done, it’s absolutely unbelievable. Complete safe pair of hands at that football club, but now he’s got some brilliant players, young players, really aggressive plays in the final third, and that was a massive win today.”

Robins has caused West Brom problems in the past, picking up two wins in nine appearances against them, and his preferred 3-4-1-2 formation could get the best out of wing-backs and be an awkward system to come up against. He could soon be seen as a front-runner to take charge at The Hawthorns.
