Newcastle wanted to sign "elite" star, now he’s outperforming Isak & Gordon

After a disappointing campaign last year, Eddie Howe and his Newcastle side will be looking to qualify for European football once again, having tasted Champions League action during the 2023/24 season.

However, Newcastle were unable to make big investments this summer due to PSR, making two big sales, and only spending €68.20m (£57m) on five incomings this summer.

The two players that left for big fees were Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, two highly-rated youth players who could have helped Newcastle this season, both of whom have started strong for their new clubs and would fit in like a glove alongside the likes of Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle attack's start to the campaign

Isak has started this term fairly slowly, only managing one goal and one assist in his five Premier League games played. Gordon has also had a slow start, only scoring the one goal in his five Premier League appearances.

However, despite an underwhelming opening few games for their main men, Newcastle have got off to a strong start as a team, winning three of their opening five matches and sitting sixth in the league on ten points.

It is actually Harvey Barnes who has started the campaign strongest, scoring three goals, and providing one assist in his 248 Premier League minutes.

But if Howe had his way this summer, Barnes could have found himself with far fewer minutes, and may not have started the season in red-hot form, as the English manager was eyeing a possible right-wing addition to boost Newcastle’s chances.

Newcastle's interest in Noni Madueke

Newcastle reportedly had a strong interest in Chelsea winger Noni Madueke this summer with the Blues changing their stance on his availability over the course of the transfer window.

The 22-year-old has got off to a flyer under new manager Enzo Maresca at Chelsea, scoring four goals in his opening six games in all competitions. Madueke has been described as an “elite talent” by scout Jacek Kulig in the past, and he is definitely showing that level this season so far.

Stats taken from FBref

Madueke has started the season best in terms of goal threat, scoring 0.77 goals per 90 minutes, and taking a crazy 4.36 shots per 90, really showing his confidence and intention to test the opposition goalkeeper, and make things happen in the final third.

Barnes and Gordon have better passing metrics, averaging more key passes per 90 than Madueke, and more shot-creating actions. However, Madueke still averages more assists per 90, with 0.26 compared to Barnes’ 0.24.

With how Maresca sets up his Chelsea team, Madueke’s responsibilities lie in the final third, receiving the ball out wide, looking to beat his man 1v1, and then attack the goal, something he has done effectively to start the season, especially in their 6-2 win against Wolves, where the young forward netted a hat-trick.

The question is, would Madueke have started so strong for Howe’s side, and if he did join, would it have stopped Barnes thriving? One thing is for sure, the English winger definitely would have made the Newcastle squad stronger.

James Vince trumps Babar Azam's 158 as England seal stunning 332 chase

Maiden international hundred sets up record run-chase and England 3-0 clean sweep

James Vince’s maiden international century led England to a stunning victory and a 3-0 series sweep in their final ODI against Pakistan at Edgbaston.Vince’s 102 off 95 balls came in a 129-run stand for the sixth wicket with the impressive Lewis Gregory, who scored 77 in just his third one-day international as the hosts pulled off the highest successful ODI run-chase at Edgbaston. It came after Babar Azam’s career-best 158 lifted Pakistan to 331 for 9. Azam shared a third-wicket partnership worth 179 with Mohammad Rizwan, whose 74 off 58 balls was pivotal in pushing Pakistan’s total into territory which had previously evaded them on this tour. Imam-ul-Haq also contributed a valuable 56 and put on 92 runs for the second wicket with Azam.Brydon Carse, like Gregory, playing his third ODI after being called into England’s new-look side following a spate of positive Covid tests in the original squad, claimed five wickets, including that of Azam late in the innings.Carse was there at the end too, striking the winning runs – a four off Shaheen Shah Afridi – as he and Craig Overton held the England innings together after the loss of Vince and Gregory. On the eve of England’s second anniversary as World Cup champions, it was a very different side which produced this fairy tale ending. After disappointing returns from the three matches he played in England’s World Cup campaign, Vince’s innings saved his side after Phil Salt, Zak Crawley and Ben Stokes made starts but failed to press on.Exquisite on the drive square of the wicket, his advance to Hasan Ali before crunching him through the covers summed up Vince’s poise. He duly reached his hundred via a blistering four off Ali through the leg side, brandishing his bat and letting out an almighty roar as he watched the ball race to the boundary.Babar Azam swings into a pull during his masterful innings of 158•PA Images via Getty Images

Gregory, who starred with bat and ball in the previous match at Lord’s, backed up his innings of 40 there with another accomplished knock of 77 from 69 balls, including six fours and three sixes.England needed only 62 from the last 10 overs and, so long as he and Vince remained at the crease, they looked in prime position. But when Haris Rauf accounted for both – Vince holing out to mid-off and Gregory skying to silly point, where Shadab Khan took an excellent catch running from the covers – the requirement was 38 off 43.Rauf claimed career-best figures of 4 for 65 but Pakistan were left to rue a rash of costly fielding errors long before Overton and Carse arrived to see England home.England’s pursuit began brightly, thanks to Salt, who clubbed Afridi for four boundaries in five balls during the opening over of England’s innings.Ali had Dawid Malan caught behind by Rizwan for a duck with his second legitimate delivery, having sent down three wides to begin, and while replays raised doubt over whether Malan had laid bat on ball, the batter had already walked.Salt continued in enterprising fashion to reach 37 off just 22 balls, but when Pakistan introduced Rauf in the seventh over, Salt fell to his first ball, clipping off the pads to Fakhar Zaman at midwicket.Related

Rauf then flattened Crawley’s off stump to bring Stokes to the middle, but England’s stand-in skipper couldn’t stick around for long, despite being handed two extra lives on a platter.Pakistan had been sloppy in the field but when Stokes hit Khan straight to Ali at fine leg, the ball inexplicably slid straight through the fielder’s hands. Khan was the bowler again when Stokes picked out long-on where Shoaib Maqsood got a hand to the ball stretching to his right but failed to cling on as it dribbled away for four.Having seen his long hop mowed over the fence at cow corner, Shadab finally removed Stokes, who attempted a slog-sweep but succeeded only in sending a narrow edge to Rizwan, who ended up having to be replaced by Sarfaraz Ahmed after being struck on the inside of his knee by a ball thrown in from the outfield.Earlier, Pakistan had made an understandably watchful start, given their collapses in Cardiff and Lord’s where they were all out for 141 and 195 respectively. They lost Zaman for just 6, his attempted punch through the off side off Saqib Mahmood stymied by the awkward bounce and finding Crawley at slip. The team fifty took 13.4 overs and after 17 they were 59 for 1.Coming with scores of 0 and 19 from the first two matches, Azam took 15 balls to get off the mark amid consecutive maidens from Player of the Series Mahmood. He crept to 15 off 38 but then he started to find the boundary more regularly.Imam also entered the match in need of runs and, after 11 overs, 24 of his 26 runs had come through boundaries. He passed 2000 ODI runs in the course of his innings.Azam unfurled a beautiful extra cover drive off Carse to bring up their fifty partnership and he punished Gregory’s off-cutter over cow corner before smashing Matt Parkinson over long-off.It was Parkinson who broke their union with a ripper that turned sharply from well outside off and clattered into middle stump. With Pakistan 113 for 2, Rizwan arrived in typically attacking mood and he reached his half-century in 42 balls.Azam, meanwhile, reached his 14th ODI century with a crisp cut to the boundary off Mahmood. He was dropped on 126 when he struck a Parkinson full toss with gusto to midwicket, where Carse was unable to hold what would have been a wonderful catch, and Azam went on to score 13 off the over.Carse had Rizwan out edging an attempted pull to keeper John Simpson and then removed Maqsood and Ali cheaply. Mahmood took two wickets in as many balls when he bowled Faheem Ashraf and had Khan caught behind.Azam finally fell top-edging Carse to Malan at cover with four balls left in the innings and Carse had Afridi caught by Vince two balls later to claim his fifth wicket.

Sold for £6.3m: Birmingham hit gold with ace who’s now worth millions less

Birmingham City garnered a reputation for being big spenders during the summer, entering League One very much as a big fish in a small pond.

16 new faces would end up joining Chris Davies’ ever-growing camp, including one notable deal which saw Jay Stansfield return to St. Andrew’s for an eye-watering £20m, after he lit up the Championship for the Blues on loan even during their relegation woes.

However, splashing the cash isn’t just reserved for this chapter in Birmingham’s story, with the West Midlands outfit prone to splurging out excessive amounts when still competing in the second tier.

Sunjic's transfer to Birmingham

Ivan Sunjic arrived at Birmingham as a major buy back in 2019, leaving behind his native Croatia for a new opportunity in England, costing the Blues a significant £6.3m fee in the process.

This move would ultimately feel like a waste of money when Sunjic departed five years later, with the ex-Dinamo Zagreb man showing signs of his class in patches, but always held back by playing in a Birmingham side constantly teetering on the edge of relegation down to League One.

Sunjic racked up more managers than goals at St. Andrew’s, having seen a staggering nine head coaches enter and exit the dug-out in the West Midlands during his 173-game spell with the club, registering seven goals and six assists along the way.

It’s fair to say, fast forwarding to the present day, the likes of Stansfield are more than justifying their obscene price-tag over the costly Croat, with the former Fulham ace having bagged three goals already in a Blues shirt on his return.

It would end up being a sorry end to Sunjic’s Birmingham career this summer, with the relegated outfit allowing the 27-year-old to leave the building on a free transfer, as Cypriot side Paphos gambled on the former £6.3m man’s services.

Davies’ men were likely just glad to get Sunjic off their books, as they began their mass overhaul of the squad in the busy transfer window, with the one-time Croatia senior international still worth way less than his previous high price, despite settling in well to his new surroundings so far.

Sunjic's transfer value in 2024

The statement Blues buy has seen his value collapse to £674k playing out in Cyprus, according to Football Transfers.

That’s way off the £6.3m Birmingham splashed out on the midfielder in 2019, with a lot of regret now on the end of the third-tier giants that they ended up coughing up such an excessive amount.

Across the course of his Birmingham stay, Sunjic saw his value fall more and more, with the 27-year-old worth just £1.6m last October, before moving on for nothing recently.

There will be an annoyance on the end of Davies’ men that they couldn’t get a fee out of Sunjic when he did leave the building, but the absence of their former midfield dud hasn’t been felt whatsoever in the squad now, with Tomoki Iwata and Paik Seung-Ho striking up a formidable partnership in central midfield for the promotion chasers so far this campaign.

Seung-Ho has even won himself a call-up to the South Korean national team, as the ambitious Blues eye up an immediate return to the Championship.

At least in the here and now, Birmingham’s lavish spending looks to be justified, away from splashing out the cash on the likes of Sunjic who have already been forgotten about in St. Andrew’s quarters.

Birmingham must rue selling £3m ace who's now worth as much as Stansfield

Abdul Razzaq moves from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to Central Punjab in PCB coaching shake-up

Four of the six provincial teams will have new coaches for the 2021-22 domestic season

Umar Farooq20-Aug-2021

Under Abdul Razzaq, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa won three trophies last season•PCB

In a major shake-up in Pakistan’s domestic cricket, the PCB has juggled four head coaches ahead of the 2021-22 season. Abdul Razzaq, whose Khyber Pakhtunkhwa side won trophies in all three formats last season, will now coach Central Punjab. In turn, Shahid Anwar will move from Central Punjab to Southern Punjab, and Abdur Rehman from Southern Punjab – where he spent two seasons – to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The former WAPDA batter Rafatullah Mohmand will be Rehman’s assistant.Ijaz Ahmed Jnr, who was sacked last season despite winning the 2019-20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with Central Punjab, will now take over at Northern, who had been without a head coach since Mohammad Wasim became the men’s national team’s chief selector.Basit Ali and Faisal Iqbal are the only two head coaches who will remain with their old teams, Sindh and Balochistan respectively, for the new season. There has been a drastic tweak of coaching appointments in the Second XI circuit as well. The change is meant to aid the development of Pakistani coaches, allowing them to work in diverse environments and conditions, though the flip side could be that the rotation might have an adverse impact on player development. Razzaq, for example, will not be able to build on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa squad that won three trophies last season, and will instead have to start afresh with an entirely new set of players.”This will not only help us in boosting our pool of Pakistan coaching candidates, but also develop strong self-reliant players by learning from multiple coaches who are ready to take on different challenges from the early stages of their careers,” said Grant Bradburn, the PCB’s head of high-performance coaching. “In Pakistan, we get very few opportunities for our coaches to experience different assignments and learning opportunities. Particularly, in Covid-19 times, it has been difficult to provide outside learning experiences for our leading coaches.”Therefore, we are openly creating a variety of challenges for our coaches to grow. This gives the background to some of the changes and rotations you will see we have made this season. All of our domestic coaches and city coaches are supported and challenged with two clear tasks – put your team into contention to win, and develop players. Our job is also to challenge and develop our coaches and we do this in a number of ways: 360-degree reviews, individual coach profile, coach learning groups, in-season workshops, coaching courses, one-on-one mentoring, and international camp/tour assignments.”Grant Bradburn, the PCB’s head of high-performance coaching, says the shake-up will enable coaches to ‘experience different assignments and learning opportunities’•Peter Della Penna

The coaches for all six associations have been appointed by the high-performance unit, ranging from youth (U-13 to U-19) to the senior level. The National T20 Cup set to begin on September 25, kicking off a 266-match domestic season. This is the third season in a row with the same domestic structure, which was put in place by the Ehsan Mani-led board that dismantled the earlier mix of departmental and regional cricket and adopted a provincial-team model at the insistence of Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is the PCB’s patron. The new model is solely controlled and regulated by the PCB even though each of the six associations has an independent board. The change in domestic structure sparked a country-wide outrage with the new system costing several players, especially those employed by departmental teams, their livelihoods. Eventually, the PCB created jobs for the veteran cricketers at the association level, inviting them to take up positions in various fields such as coaching, administration and umpiring. The new appointment saw dozens of retired players making their way into the coaching profession. Notable names from the circuit, including Shoaib Khan, Humayun Farhat, Aamir Sajjad, Aizaz Cheema, Saeed Bin Nasir, Mansoor Amjad have been given roles in various team managements as assistant coaches. Other than the national setup, the PCB has also appointed coaches for the 93 city cricket associations.”Our primary objective is to develop coaches who are capable of providing the support for our players and teams to be the best in the world,” said Bradburn. “Ideally, we would prefer our national coaches of the future to come from a strong pool of Pakistan coaches who have proven coach performance at the highest level. Together we have set some ambitious goals over the next five years to be in the top three in all formats. We are working hard with our coaches and players to clarify that pathway, what is needed in every aspect of achieving those ambitions.”

O Corinthians bancaria o teto (R$ 1 milhão) e a empresa garantiria o restante do salário.

Cardiff have last candidates to replace Bulutl; includes Real Madrid legend

In what could finally see the Bluebirds find their next manager, Cardiff City have reportedly narrowed their options down to two final candidates, which include a Real Madrid legend.

Cardiff's managerial candidates

Since sacking Erol Bulut at the end of September, Cardiff have relied on Omer Riza on an interim basis. But whilst results have improved somewhat after Bulut took charge of their worst start to a season in 94 years, the Welsh side still sit rock bottom of the Championship table, three points adrift of safety and in desperate need of a permanent appointment.

Whoever comes in will have an almighty task, but Cardiff have at least turned a corner in their last two games, with a 1-0 victory over Millwall followed by a 1-1 draw against Bristol City last time out.

Get things right on the managerial front, and the Bluebirds may just build on those results to eventually move out of the drop zone and towards safety to put such a disappointing start behind them, especially if they make the right choice between the two reported final candidates.

"Fantastic" new coach would jump at chance to join Cardiff City – Palmer

The pundit “can see him leaving”.

According to Chris Wheatley of LondonWorld, Cardiff have narrowed their candidates down to Ruben Selles and Claude Makelele, with the latter being a potential arrival to steal the headlines. The Welsh side are reportedly in talks with the Chelsea and Real Madrid legend as he prepares to become the latest star to take to the dugout in the Championship.

Leaving after just three weeks in charge of Greek side Asteras Tripolis, Makelele will be desperate for another attempt in the technical area in what would be his second spell in Wales, having been Swansea City’s assistant manager in the 2016/17 campaign.

Meanwhile, although Selles wouldn’t grab the same headlines, the Reading boss represents a solid option in his own right amid the chaos that he’s been forced to deal with in charge of the Royals amid their financial crisis.

Makelele could follow Rooney and Carrick path

In what makes a lot of us feel old these days, the likes of Tom Cleverley, Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick no longer find themselves competing or playing alongside each other on the pitch. Instead, the former Premier League players find themselves competing in the technical area to add an added element of intrigue to the Championship.

All have had varying fortunes during their time in management, and could now be joined by former Chelsea midfielder Makelele. The Frenchman, perhaps alongside Rooney at Plymouth Argyle, would arguably have the most difficult task out of the fresh crop of former players turned managers.

Keeping Cardiff afloat – particularly without extensive experience – looks a tough task on paper, but this could be the true rebirth of Makelele’s managerial career which stalled in Greece, having returned to the dugout after five years away.

As the international break goes on, the Frenchman could be one to watch with Cardiff now down to their final candidates in their search to replace Bulut.
