Man Utd offered free Eriksen replacement Solskjaer tried to sign for £26m

Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign a player who is currently without a club, according to a new report.

The Red Devils had a very busy transfer window, as they added five new players and also oversaw 13 departures. But the change in personnel hasn’t had the desired effect as yet, as the club has won just one of their three league games.

As stated, Manchester United saw 13 faces leave the club over the course of the summer, with players such as Scott McTominay, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Jadon Sancho all departing. However, one player who didn’t leave Old Trafford and might have been expected to was midfielder Christian Eriksen.

The 32-year-old, who joined the club on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, is now in the final year of his contract, and there was an expectation that he would be moved on. However, that didn’t happen in the transfer window, but there has been talk it could still occur as some transfer windows around Europe remain open.

It was claimed earlier this week that Anderlecht are interested in signing the Denmark international, as the club’s chief executive, Jesper Fredberg, is a “long-term admirer” of the player.

However, the Belgian side is running out of time to get a deal completed, as their transfer window shuts on the 6th of September. There could also be a stumbling block, as the midfielder’s £150,000 wages may prove a sticking point. As Eriksen’s future at Old Trafford continues to be uncertain, the Red Devils have now been offered the chance to replace him.

Man United offered the chance to sign experienced free agent

According to HITC, Manchester United are one of a number of clubs to be offered the chance to sign Yusuf Yazici on a free transfer. The 45-cap Turkey international had been with French side Lille since 2019, but he now finds himself without a club after they decided not to renew his contract.

This report states that Turkish giants Galatasaray are leading the race for the attacking midfielder, but they also face competition from AC Milan, Lazio, and a host of Premier League clubs, including Man United. It goes on to add that Manchester United would only be able to add Yazici, who was once described as being “incredible” by former Arsenal player Mesut Özil, to their squad if they moved Eriksen on.

This isn’t the first time that United have been linked with a move for Yazici, as in 2019 the Red Devils were looking to sign him from Trabzonspor, and they were ready to bid €27m plus €4m in add-ons (a total of £26m) to add him to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. However, they missed out on his signing, and he instead joined Lille.

Door not closed on Sri Lanka seniors – Mickey Arthur

Batting coach Grant Flower reckons SL’s inexperience has played a role in their first series loss against Bangladesh

The lack of experience in the top order may have played a role in Sri Lanka’s poor batting performances in Bangladesh. And the door’s not closed on the seniors who were left out of this series. These are the conclusions Sri Lanka’s coaches have come to after a dispiriting series loss against Bangladesh (their first ever), in which a relatively green top order collapsed twice in pursuit of testing totals.Sri Lanka had left out the likes of Angelo Mathews for this series, and for batting coach Grant Flower, having batters with experience in situations such as facing good spin bowling after early wickets had fallen, could have led to better results. The absence of seniors has been made particularly stark by the excellent innings produced by Bangladesh’s most-experienced players – Mushfiqur Rahim in particular, who has hit 84 and 125 so far in the series, to win both Player-of-the-Match awards.”[The lack of experienced batters] looks like it’s had quite a big impact at this stage,” Flower said on the eve of the third ODI. “The young guys who were selected are good players, but are lacking a lot of experience. When you look at Mushfiqur’s experience or Tamim Iqbal – they’ve played a hell of a lot of cricket.”Related

Mehidy Hasan: 'I focused on economy rate'

Flower’s comments chime with those made by head coach Mickey Arthur earlier in the day, who had emphasised that although senior players had been left out for this series, they are not totally out of selection contention. (Arthur, to be fair, had said similar things about Mathews even before the series loss.)”The door’s not closed for anybody – certainly not,” said Arthur. “We’ve started on a journey with what we think is a team that will play in 2023, but the door’s no closed on anybody. Certainly some senior players can come at any given time depending on performances. We’re trying to create depth within our side, so everybody puts pressure on each other.”Flower commented on Mathews specifically, whose omission always seemed the harshest, from among the senior lot. Not only was Mathews by far the most experienced player in Sri Lanka’s ODI player pool, with 218 appearances, he’d also averaged 52.57 with the bat in the four years between 2016 and 2019, though with a strike rate of 79.61.”Someone like Ange could come off and he is still a fine player,” Flower said. “His record suggests that just recently in the contractual period, he’s done ok. But over time, the selectors and director of cricket thought it was time to blood some new people. Whether or not they change their minds and ask Ange to come back, I’m not sure.”As far as the third ODI goes, Flower said he wanted batters to play more aggressively than they had in the previous two games. In both chases so far, Sri Lanka had stuttered in the early overs and allowed the required rate to climb rapidly past a run-a-ball early in the middle overs. They were chasing 258 and 247.”Definitely take more calculated risks and play the way they do in the nets – that’s what you work on. Good bowlers at this level are going to keep landing it on the spot. But you have to be proactive and move your feet, or play the odd sweep, or get deep in the crease. Mushfiqur, for example, is not a big hitter but he manipulates the ball brilliantly. The boys have got a great example playing against them.”Offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been Sri Lanka’s prime destroyer, taking seven wickets in the two matches so far.”Mehidy’s just got to No. 2 in the rankings, so he’s a very good offspinner. I think we’ve played him with too much respect.”

Liverpool struck gold selling Anfield sensation for stunning 1570% profit

Where did it all begin? Jurgen Klopp dug Liverpool out of the trenches after replacing Brendan Rodgers at the helm, crafting a dynasty that restored the Premier League side as a global superpower.

He was a brilliant manager, and he worked wonders on Merseyside, inculcating an absorbing style of football that claimed silverware across every front. The whole gamut.

Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool beat Chelsea in the 2022 Carabao Cup final.

Partnered with Michael Edwards' transfer expertise, Liverpool thrived, and one of the biggest masterstrokes, if not the biggest, has got to be the £34m signing of Mohamed Salah from AS Roma.

The legend of Mohamed Salah

Salah earned a second shot at the Premier League back in 2017, having flattered to deceive as a younger, unpolished prospect with Chelsea, scoring two goals for the Blues before moving to Italy.

Mohamed Salah for Liverpool

You know the rest… he's now one of the finest forwards in Premier League history, having scored 214 goals and added 92 assists across 352 appearances, hailed for his "world-class" ability by analyst Raj Chohan, among many others.

The Egypt international is an extraordinary forward, with peak athleticism, deadly finishing and elite-level technique and creativity that makes him a unique attacking asset.

Salah turned 32 in July, but he's started life under Arne Slot with utter dispatch, posting three goals and three assists apiece across Liverpool's opening three Premier League fixtures, recently tearing Manchester United to shreds.

He continues to shine as Liverpool's centrepiece, but what if the signing of Salah was not actually Liverpool's watershed moment?

It was actually an outgoing transfer that had the biggest effect on Klopp's dynasty and the present-day fortunes of Slot's Reds. It was the sale of Philippe Coutinho.

Selling Coutinho was Klopp's watershed moment

It was, at the time, as if a hole had ripped Liverpool's beating heart asunder. Klopp's tenure was in full swing, and the Merseysiders were starting to establish themselves as an incredible attacking force.

The iconic front three: Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino. They enjoyed over five years together and won it all during that timeframe, but for five balmy months, they were supplied by the ball-playing brilliance of Coutinho.

Coutinho only made 14 Premier League in 2017/18, before he fled during the winter, but what a masterclass in scoring, in assisting, in dominating. Lucas Leiva, former Redman, hailed him as a "magician" and, honestly, it's fitting.

But alas, Coutinho had caught wind of Barcelona's interest, and, let's be frank, was playing out of his skin to convince Barcelona to pay the big bucks to secure his signature, having enjoyed several successful years in England, joining Liverpool from Inter Milan for just £8.5m in January 2013.

Philippe Coutinho scores for Liverpool

In August 2017, the former Brazil international handed in a transfer request as he sought to force his way through to Catalonia, and though this was rejected by Klopp and Co, La Blaugrana returned in January with an offer that could not be refused.

Barcelona paid £146m to bring Coutinho from Anfield to Camp Nou in January 2018. Look, he was rather irreplaceable, but he wasn't that irreplaceable. That's quite the payday for FSG, no doubt giddy and in need of a lie down upon the official bid.

After all, that sale meant that he left for 1570% more than was once paid for, which can only go down as brilliant business.

It was the most important bit of transfer business that Liverpool have conducted in a long, long time. More so than the signing of Salah, more so than the signing and sale of Luis Suarez, an iconic centre-forward of which Liverpool may never see the like of again.

Why? It opened up a world of opportunity, of course. Liverpool went on to sign Virgil van Dijk (£75m) and Alisson Becker (£67m), in the year that followed, ending a Klopp side that teemed with attacking talent but suffered for its defensive fragility.

Philippe Coutinho scores for Liverpool

They revolutionised the squad, proved to be transcendental deals that took a good team and turned it into a great one. It's a Liverpool side that still enjoys the veteran performances of both players today, and looks ready to tackle the obstacles for the biggest prizes under Slot's leadership.

Coutinho made it all very real. He proved to be the winning lottery ticket toward a golden age. We love him for his performances in Red, but we thank him for moving to Barcelona and sparking the most illustrious of periods.

Campeão Sub-20, capitão do Inter dispara: 'A meta é o profissional'

Liverpool send scouts to watch Ballon d’Or nominee who once dominated Trent

As the Champions League returned in midweek, Liverpool reportedly sent scouts to watch one target in action who once dominated Trent Alexander-Arnold in a Reds defeat.

Liverpool transfer news

The January transfer window could be a busy one for Arne Slot and Liverpool, with the Dutchman settling in well and getting to know exactly what his side need in terms of winter reinforcements. On that front, reports have suggested that the Reds want to sign both a left-back and defensive midfielder in 2025, having been linked with moves for the likes of Milos Kerkez as a result.

Slot must drop Jota and finally unleash Liverpool's "unstoppable" star

The Reds need to return to winning ways in the Premier League…

ByAngus Sinclair Sep 21, 2024

The Bournemouth full-back enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in the Premier League last time out and has picked up where he left off in an excellent start to the current season. Anfield, of course, could get the chance to see his quality for themselves when the Cherries square up against a Liverpool side looking to avoid back-to-back Premier League defeats.

Aside from a defensive midfielder and a left-back, meanwhile, those in Merseyside could also strengthen their attacking options once again in 2025 with reports suggesting that they’ve set their sights on one star winger.

According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Liverpool sent scouts to watch Ademola Lookman in Atalanta’s 0-0 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League this week. The Gunners were also taking note of his quality, while both teams were also watching his teammate, midfielder Ederson, who has long been linked with Premier League sides.

Alexander-Arnold would certainly be a relieved man if Liverpool signed Lookman, having struggled against the former Everton man on more than one occasion, including when he ripped the Reds academy graduate to shreds in Leicester City’s 1-0 victory in 2021.

The winger came off the bench in the 56th minute, before netting what proved to be the winner in the 59th minute and ending the game having won six of nine duels and completed 100% of his passes and take-ons to leave Alexander-Arnold bewildered.

With that said, it’s fair to say that the Liverpool star would rather call Lookman his teammate rather than opponent.

"Instinctive" Lookman could now combine with Trent

It would be quite the turn of events if Lookman – a former Everton player – arrived at Anfield to form a deadly partnership with Alexander-Arnold down Liverpool’s right-hand side for years to come. Now 26 years old and in his prime, there couldn’t be a better time for the Nigeria international to finally make his mark in the Premier League once and for all.

Dubbed “instinctive” by analyst Ben Mattinson after scoring a hat-trick in Atalanta’s shock Europa League victory over Bayer Leverkusen last season, Lookman is one to watch having even made his way onto the Ballon d’Or shortlist.

With plenty of interest in his signature, Liverpool cannot afford to hesitate when chasing the arrival of the Atalanta man, however.

Fatima Sana and Nashra Sandhu’s four-wicket hauls guided Pakistan Women to victory against the West Indies Women in the fourth ODI in North Sound on Friday. The visitors chased down the target of 211 with four wickets in hand and nine balls to spare, with Omaima Sohail top-scoring with an 89-ball 61. West Indies Women, though, had already sealed the series and lead 3-1.Asked to bat first after a delayed start, the hosts rode on Kyshona Knight’s 88 off 140 balls and captain Stafaine Taylor’s 77-ball 49 before the team suffered a collapse. Medium-pacer Sana struck early to dismiss both openers Hayles Matthews and Deandra Dottin inside eight overs, but Knight and Taylor put on 142 runs together to stabilise the innings. It was also the highest partnership for the third wicket in ODIs for the West Indies Women.Taylor’s dismissal in the 40th over triggered a collapse as the West Indies went from 171 for 2 to eventually be bowled out for 210 in 49.4 overs. Sana was the pick of the Pakistan bowlers, claiming 4 for 30 – including two maidens – in her eight overs. Left-arm spinner Sandhu took 4 for 49 in 9.4 overs.Despite losing top-order batters Muneeba Ali and captain Javeria Khan early in the chase, Sidra Ameen and Sohail ensured Pakistan crossed the finish line. Shakira Selman and Mathews picked up two wickets apiece for the West Indies. However, it wasn’t enough to threaten the visitors.”I think we fell short by about 15 to 20 runs,” Anisa Mohammed, West Indies Women’s vice-captain, told after the loss.”At the beginning of the series, we kept saying we wanted to score over 225 that would give them some competition, and we just fell short today. The pitch was a bit damp at the start, so our batters found it a bit hard to score but having Kyshona batting really well and seeing us through, I think just in the middle, coming down to the end we lost too many wickets at crucial times. As bowlers, we weren’t as consistent as we should have been.”
