Tournament 'quite wide open' – Bismah Maroof after Pakistan's tone-setting win

They were the last team to join the tournament, but their victory against WI is one of the most complete performances so far

It was a fitting finish. Bismah Maroof skipped down the pitch at her opposite number, Stafaine Taylor, and drove a boundary through off the side to seal a clinical chase from Pakistan. They have had to bide their time to join the tournament as the last team to play a match, but their entry was one of the most complete performances so far. Some context shows how significant the result was. This was their first T20I in Australia for five-and-a-half years; they lost their one official World Cup warm-up match that survived the weather in Brisbane by five runs to Bangladesh; they had only won two of their previous 12 T20Is against West Indies (although this win did make it two in a row after a victory a year ago in Karachi). Was this upset? The history would suggest so.Pakistan have never moved out of the first round of T20 World Cup. Pre-tournament, when assessments were made about where sides stand, they were generally bracketed in the third tier – those aiming for, perhaps, a solitary win and a sign of progression. This performance suggested that they may be able to offer more than that. Pakistan are now one of four sides with two points in Group B and have Thailand to play. England and South Africa will pose tougher challenges, but they are on notice.”We needed this win to move ahead,” Maroof said. “I think looking ahead versus England, this win has given us some momentum and belief. The way this tournament has gone, it’s quite wide open and any team can beat the other.”It all started with the first ball. Diana Baig won an lbw appeal against Hayley Matthews which pitched at least six inches outside leg stump (from a right-arm over bowler to a right-handed batter) but Matthews took too long to decide whether to review. There were some mystified looks in the West Indies dugout when she returned.”Everything went wrong from the first ball of the game with Hayley getting out,” allrounder Chinelle Henry said, aptly summing up West Indies’ evening. The wicket unsettled West Indies and Pakistan took advantage. Baig’s opening spell was 3-0-6-2 as she also claimed the scalp of Lee-Ann Kirby when she carved a catch into the off side. Javeria Khan, who was named player of the match for her momentum-seizing 35 off 28 balls, believed the award should have been Baig’s. “I am really surprised that I got this award. I think more than me, Diana [Baig] deserves it because she gave us the start which we never expected and I think she deserved it,” she said at the presentation.Deandra Dottin was clearly still struggling from the effects of the shoulder surgery that made her briefly ponder quitting the game – she can’t throw in the outfield, relaying everything to a team-mate, and has yet to bowl – and laboured to 1 off 10 balls before picking out long-on in Nida Dar’s first over. Then, as West Indies were staging a recovery through Taylor and Shemaine Campbelle, Maroof showed the value of getting a DRS call correct when Campbelle was initially given not out when she missed a reverse sweep. There was a contrast to the energy in the two teams throughout. West Indies had scrapped together a total that could have challenged Pakistan with early wickets, but they were poor from the start in the field and by the time Khan and Muneeba Ali had added 58 for the first wicket, the game was Pakistan’s to lose. The fact that never came close to happening emphasises how well controlled the chase was. There was a calmness about the batting, and a crispness to the strokeplay, that has not always been associated with Pakistan batting – one shot, a scything hit by Khan off Henry, stood out.”We’ve struggled at times in the past, but we focused to stay calm and stay in the middle…and I think credit to Nida, as well, how she played and finished the game,” Maroof said. “I think how the openers played set the tone for us, and we just needed to get the run rate going. We want to play aggressive cricket and get the bad balls to the boundaries.”When Maroof struck the winning boundary and ran up the pitch there was a little punch of the air. A job very well done. “Pakistan, Zindabad!” came the chant from a couple of small pockets of Pakistan supporters at Manuka Oval. Could this be their breakout tournament?

Kai Havertz’s incredible form could spell the end for Arsenal’s £68m ace

The Premier League title might still be out of their hands, but Arsenal put in a performance to be proud of on Sunday afternoon as they ran out 3-2 winners away to Tottenham Hotspur.

Mikel Arteta's men, seemingly intent on giving their fans heart attacks, came dangerously close to letting their three-goal lead slip in the second half, but a steely backs-to-the-wall performance saw them through. While things looked a little ropey in the end, their team deserves all the praise they are getting, especially Kai Havertz.

The German, once mocked by rival fans, is now one of the Gunners' most dangerous stars, and he showed that again on Sunday, putting in a performance that could spell trouble for another Arsenal ace.

Kai Havertz's performance vs Tottenham Hotspur

The yardstick often used to gauge how successful big-money signings are is how they perform in the biggest games, and after a week in which Havertz scored two goals against Chelsea and scored and assisted against Tottenham, it would be hard to describe his summer move as anything other than a success.

There is no more sure way of winning over the fans than putting in big performances against rivals, and it feels as if the former Bayer Leverkusen star has now firmly established himself as a fan favourite among the Arsenal faithful.

His display on Sunday impressed more than just his travelling support, though, as the Standard's Simon Collings gave the 24-year-old a 9/10 on the day, writing that he put in 'one of his best performances in an Arsenal shirt', an opinion that's hard to disagree with.

That said, if anyone needed any more convincing, they'd just have to take a look at the striker's numbers from the game. In his 96 minutes of action, the Aachen-born ace scored one goal, provided one assist, took 46 touches, made two key passes, created one big chance, eight out of ten aerial duels, won two fouls and made one tackle.

In all, it was a genuinely impressive showing from a player who had, up until this week, split opinion, and while he's likely cemented his place in the starting lineup for the season's remaining games, his brilliant form might just have signalled the beginning of the end for one of his teammates.

Havertz's excellent form is bad news for Gabriel Jesus

Yes, while Leandro Trossard was comfortably Arsenal's worst attacker on the day – picking up a 4/10 from Football FanCast for his efforts – the player who could be at risk of losing his spot in the team thanks to Havertz's form is Gabriel Jesus.

Now, the former Manchester City ace is an incredibly talented player and one who should be playing for a Champions League side – his record of 32 goals in 46 games in the competition is evidence enough of that – but his time as an Arsenal player may well be coming to a close, at least if the Gunners bring in another quality number nine in the summer, that is.

The North Londoners have been linked to a plethora of frontmen already this year, such as Ivan Toney, Viktor Gyokeres, Joshua Zirkzee, and Victor Osimhen. If they do bring any of them through the door in the summer, it seems incredibly unlikely that they would also keep both Jesus and Havertz.

So, with that in mind, how do the pair stack up with one another? Well, when it comes to pure output, it's the recent arrival who comes out ahead, with 13 goals and six assists in 48 appearances – 32 of which were in midfield – to the Brazilian's eight goals and seven assists in 33 appearances.

What about their underlying numbers, then? Does the São Paulo-born ace come out on top there? Unfortunately for the 27-year-old, while he comes out better in certain metrics such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, progressive carries and assists all per 90, he is once again second-best overall, per FBref.

For example, while the "magnificent" German, as described by talent scout Jacek Kulig, registers a lower non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, he scores more often, produces more progressive passes, has a far better goal-to-shots-on-target ratio, maintains a better passing accuracy, produces more goal-creating actions, recovers more balls and wins far more aerial duels, all per 90.

Ultimately, while Jesus is an undeniably gifted forward, if Arsenal can get anywhere near his €80m – £68m – valuation from the CIES Football Observatory this summer, they should consider selling him as if another striker is signed, it seems unlikely that he would be able to displace them and Havertz as well.

Wolves losing "one of the best midfielders" was a bigger mistake than Neves

Wolverhampton Wanderers, having started the season well, are approaching the finishing line with a whimper.

Since beating Fulham 2-1 on March 9, Wolves have won just once in the Premier League, slipping outside the top half of the table in the process.

Despite this alarming drop-off, Gary O’Neil has a solid core to his side, which, if kept for next season while adding in another player or two, could challenge properly for that top-half finish in the league.

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Gary O'Neil.

What is definitely required is some more strength in depth in the midfield, as O’Neil is continually relying on the same players every week.

Did they make a mistake selling Ruben Neves last summer? As his leadership skills and ability could have ensured this late-season dip might never have happened.

How much Wolves sold Ruben Neves for

It was clear that Neves was eyeing a move elsewhere following six seasons at Molineux, where he became one of their key players, helping them secure promotion in 2018 while playing a major part in establishing the club as a regular in the Premier League – scoring 30 goals in 253 games in all competitions.

When an offer of £47m arrived from Saudi Arabia, there was no question the Midlands side were going to accept, especially with the pressure to comply with the financial fair play regulations, but it is clear the club are missing Neves.

Former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves.

For his new team, Al-Hilal, the Portuguese midfielder has scored seven times and grabbed 11 assists. In comparison, no Wolves' midfielder has more than six goal contributions this season, which is slightly worrying.

He remains a big loss to the spine of the team, especially with his continued success elsewhere, but might Wolves have let an even bigger talent slip through the net in recent times? As Paris Saint-Germain midfielder, Vitinha was previously on the books for Wolves.

Vitinha's record at Wolves

In September 2020, Wolves managed to secure the signature of the Portuguese starlet on a season-long loan deal from FC Porto, with an option to buy inserted into the deal.

vitinha-wolves

Given his potential, it looked as though the Old Gold could be close to pulling off another masterstroke in a similar vein to Neves, but Vitinha’s time in the Midlands was far from a success.

Across all competitions, he managed to make just 22 appearances for Wolves, scoring once and providing one assist, failing to really showcase his potential under Nuno Espírito Santo.

It wasn’t until he returned to Porto ahead of the 2021/22 campaign that failing to sign him permanently looked like it could prove to be a massive mistake.

Vitinha's record since leaving Wolves

The midfielder began to really showcase his true worth when returning to Porto, making 47 appearances across all competitions while scoring four times and grabbing five assists.

After impressing in Portugal, PSG completed the signing of the highly rated player in the summer of 2022, spending €40m (£34.4m) to lure him to France, and it has proven to be a tremendous bargain given how well he has performed, especially this season.

Under Luis Enrique, PSG have looked like a much better team than in previous years, finally showing some cohesion as a collective unit, rather than relying on three or four-star names.

Vitinha has been the beating heart of the squad which not only claimed the Ligue 1 title for the third successive season but are into the final of the Coupe de France while coming ever so close to making their second Champions League final.

In Europe’s premier club competition, Vitinha has played a starring role. The 24-year-old currently ranks seventh in the entire tournament for big chances created (five), showing how impressive he has been when compared to fellow competitors in creating opportunities for his teammates.

Despite losing 2-0 on aggregate to Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals, Vitinha has arguably been the star of the show during the knockout stages for the French side.

In the first leg against Barcelona, the youngster finished the game with a 98% pass success rate, made three key passes and lost possession just twice, controlling the game throughout.

Against Dortmund in the first leg, his distribution was incredible. Not only did he succeed with 96% of his passes, but Vitinha was accurate with all 12 long balls he played while winning four of his six ground duels during the clash in what was a sublime display.

The club may have missed out on a second Champions League final, but having a player like Vitinha at the heart of their midfield, it surely won't be long before they actually go on and win the entire thing.

It's no wonder his performances led to high praise, with analyst Ben Mattinson leading the plaudits, saying: “Might not have won the tie but Vitinha showed how he’s been one of the best midfielders in the world this season.

“The close control, IQ, vision, intelligence to dictate the tempo, ball-striking, the time of release, press resistance, mentality, tenacity. So complete.”

There is no doubt that he is going to get better and better in the coming years, especially as it doesn’t look like he has even entered his peak yet.

Wolves already have their next Morgan Gibbs-White lying in wait

He’s been dropping 9/10 performances in the Championship

ByJoe Nuttall May 7, 2024

Would Vitinha have developed this quickly had he remained at Wolves after his underwhelming loan spell? It's hard to tell, but going back to Porto and gaining a chance to be the main man in their starting XI certainly helped him secure a move to PSG.

Losing Neves was a blow, but it was always likely that he was going to leave sooner rather than later, plus turning down £47m would have been a poor move from O’Neil.

Failing to sign Vitinha on a permanent deal in 2021, however, is swiftly becoming one of the poorest choices the club have made in quite some time, no doubt about that.

ECB should seek private capital to prop up Hundred, says report

Selling equity stakes to investors could lessen the financial hit from coronavirus lockdown

The ECB should consider selling equity in Hundred teams to private investors to lessen the financial hit it faces from the coronavirus pandemic and to attract an Indian fanbase, according to a new report from a sports consultancy firm. The Hundred’s current model is similar to that used in the Big Bash, with independent boards running the eight teams under the governing body’s jurisdiction. But the report by Oakwell Sports – who advised private equity firm CVC on its investment into Premiership Rugby and recently brokered a AUS$250 million line of credit for Australia’s NRL – suggests that the competition’s costs could be significantly reduced if stakes in the teams were sold to investors using a franchise model. The Hundred is set to cost the ECB £58.4 million in its first season – including payments of £1.3 million to each county and £11.3 million in playing and support staff salaries – against income of £51 million, and is not expected to break even until its fifth season. The report suggests that a substantial proportion of these could be footed by turning central payments to the counties into equity stakes and looking to attract investment – particularly from India. The report, entitled ‘The Impact of Covid-19 on English Cricket’, states: “The ECB should consider converting its revenue distributions to counties into equity stakes and gifting these to each county. Therefore each Hundred franchise would own its revenue distribution % as an equity stake too.”This has real capital value for a county. This will attract potential private capital into buying stakes in Hundred franchises and help counties fund the overall game.”ALSO READ: Case for Hundred “greater than ever” due to Covid-19 – HarrisonIt is likely that there would be no shortage of interest from Indian investors if the Hundred were to open itself up to a franchise model. Two teams in the Caribbean Premier League are owned by the parent companies of IPL teams – Trinbago Knight Riders (Kolkata Knight Riders) and St Lucia Zouks (Kings XI Punjab). Red Chillies Entertainment (KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan’s company) had also purchased the Cape Town franchise in the aborted Global T20 League in South Africa, while Delhi Capitals’ owners GMR Sports were also due to own a team. In 2008, Hampshire became part of Rajasthan Royals’ ‘Royals 20/20’ venture, albeit little came of it.The report adds: “The Hundred needs to be able to attract Indian players and subsequently an Indian fanbase, too. The Indian subcontinent constitutes 90% of the 1 billion cricket fans aged 16-69 globally.”Indian investment into the Hundred, including from IPL team owners, may facilitate the involvement of Indian players in the longer term. In addition to generating revenue out of India, this would be vital in unlocking the south-Asian UK-based fanbase.”Currently, the BCCI does not allow Indian players to take part in overseas T20 leagues, and while there is little prospect of Virat Kohli or Jasprit Bumrah playing in the Hundred, some older players may be interested. ESPNcricinfo revealed last October that Harbhajan Singh had put his name forward for the Hundred’s inaugural draft, but withdrew after the story broke fearing he would be unable to continue playing for Chennai Super Kings, while Yuvraj Singh said it “could be an exciting format”.The Hundred’s inaugural season is likely to be postponed at an ECB board meeting on Wednesday, with little appetite to launch the competition when it seems unlikely that overseas players will be able to take part or that fans will be able to attend games. Chief executive Tom Harrison denied that the tournament’s future was in doubt on Friday, suggesting that the case for its existence was “greater than ever” on account of the Covid-19 pandemic. The report’s other recommendations include the ECB borrowing against its broadcasting contracts and lending money to help the counties survive expected combined losses of more than £85 million. A spokesperson clarified that the reported was not ECB-commissioned.

Andre Russell wasn't unhappy with me – Dinesh Karthik on IPL 2019 spat

“If I didn’t have a great relationship with him, I think it could have spiralled into something nasty,” captain says of star allrounder

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Jul-2020

Dinesh Karthik and Andre Russell have a chat•BCCI

Andre Russell, man of the tournament in IPL 2019, had criticised the “decision making” of his franchise Kolkata Knight Riders midway through the tournament, when losses for the team were piling up. That criticism had come on the back of Russell having suggested a week earlier that he wouldn’t mind moving up the order given his devastating form, saying: “To go out there and chasing 14-15 per over, it’s not the best way you want to start as a batsman.”KKR captain Dinesh Karthik had copped the blame for Russell batting lower down, but he said on Sunday that Russell was a “heart on sleeve” kind of player, and that they both shared an excellent equation which prevented a sour situation from turning ugly.”I think he’s one of those guys who wears his heart on his sleeve. It’s up to you how you take it,” Karthik said on the . “If you want to take it offensively, the mistake is on your part. If you want to take it constructively, which is how I looked at it… we had a conversation over it. Man to man, we discussed it. He wasn’t unhappy with me, he wasn’t happy that the team wasn’t winning. That is the bottom line.”ALSO READ: Andre Russell questions KKR’s decision-makingKarthik said that there was a gulf between the meaning Russell had intended to convey with his words and how they were perceived.”Whatever he said, I completely respected it. I think he got a taste of the Indian media then as well,” Karthik said. “Because what can be said and what comes out can be two different things. The tone of what you say to what comes out can be very different when it comes in print. He realised (that) and was a little apologetic as well. But at the end of the day, I have a great relationship with him. That makes the difference. If I didn’t have a great relationship with him, I think it could have spiralled into something nasty. Because I have an honest relationship, I can go straight up to him and say, ‘Russ, I don’t think what you said is right, because the way it has come out is not great, so what are we going do?’ And he said, ‘No, skip. This is how I felt about it, not how it’s come out.’ So there itself half the battle is over because what he said to what people are reading are two different things.”Karthik said that the duo had worked out the issues Russell had while explaining his own rationale, and had met his star allrounder “halfway”.”As a leader, I think having different opinions and dealing with it is one of the most important things,” Karthik said. “You need to be able to stand up and have a conversation, sometimes a hard conversation.”

Celtic plotting move to sign £10,000-a-week player who’s pushing to leave

Celtic are plotting a move to sign a "world-class" talent who is earning £10,000-a-week with his current club.

Celtic eye new goalkeeper

Earlier this year, Celtic no.1 Joe Hart announced that he would be retiring at the end of the Scottish Premiership season, ending his career on a high after the Hoops clinched yet another title.

"I wanted to get the message out, as of June I am going to stop playing football", Hart explained in February. "This is something that I have thought about for a while, there's no right or wrong time is there?

"There is obviously a conversation around the goalkeeping position for next season and I think it's really important that with the blessing of the club we get the message out and it takes one thing out of what people are going to speculate over.

"I have gone down every avenue to keep myself in the best possible shape to give my all on game day and I do really think I am at that peak, but I am aware time waits for no man and I don't want my body to be retiring me. That was one of the key factors, thinking I can smash through the finish line."

Joe Hart

Following news of Hart's impending exit, the Scottish champions have been linked with a number of new keepers heading into the summer. Celtic have reportedly made an offer of around £6.4m for the services of Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, who has been a long-term target for the Scottish outfit. Southampton shot-stopper Alex McCarthy is also being monitored ahead of him becoming a free agent this summer.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough shot-stopper Tom Glover appears to be of interest, while Motherwell goalkeeper Liam Kelly is said to be on Celtic’s list of summer targets, although rivals Rangers are also keen.

What an addition this could be at Parkhead.

ByHenry Jackson May 24, 2024

Now, however, another name, arguably of a much higher quality, has seemingly caught the eye of those at Celtic Park.

Celtic plot move to sign £10,000-a-week player

According to Football Insider, Celtic are long-term admirers of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher and are plotting their move. Crucially, it is added that the goalkeeper views this summer as the ideal time to move if he is to become the first choice at another club and also the first choice for the Republic of Ireland.

Kelleher, who earns £10,000-a-week on his current deal, which runs until 2026, was handed a more regular starting berth for Liverpool across the 2023/24 season following injury issues with Alisson. He made 26 appearances across all competitions for the Reds, keeping five clean sheets in the process and there have been claims recently that he is pushing to leave Merseyside.

Said displays earned the 25-year-old high praise from Liverpool and Netherlands stopper Virgil van Dijk. Speaking alongside Kelleher after being named man of the match in the League Cup final versus Chelsea, the Dutchman said:

“He should have got it. I’m probably one of his biggest fans, I think. I have always said he is world class and he stepped up today, again. It’s good to see. He’s a good boy, good goalkeeper and that’s what we need at a club like Liverpool.”
