Charlie Hemphrey and Bryce Street shine to give Queensland a slender lead

The first-innings lead is just 21 with three wickets in hand after Nick Winter claimed three wickets

Patient half-centuries from Charlie Hemphrey and debutant Bryce Street helped Queensland claim the lead against South Australia on a rain-affected second day at the Gabba.Just four balls were bowled in the morning session as rain denied the Redbacks any chance to make further inroads following Wes Agar’s triple-strike late on day one.Marnus Labuschagne and Hemphrey batted steadily when play resumed post-lunch building a 63-run stand while the ball still nipped and swung for South Australia’s seam bowlers. Labuschagne’s frustrating run of uncapitalised starts continued when he edged a superb delivery from the Nick Winter to second slip, having been squared-up on the back foot.Hemphrey was joined by Street and the pair set about recapturing their form from Queensland’s 2nd XI earlier this month where they combined for a sensational 412-run stand against Victoria’s second XI. On that occasion, Street made 345 not out and Hemphrey 151.Against a highly-skilled first-class attack on a more challenging Gabba strip, they had to settle for hard-working half-centuries in an 83-run stand that took nearly 46 overs to compile. Hemphrey struck eight boundaries in his 64 but would be very disappointed with his dismissal. Having nearly steered Queensland into the lead he inexplicably chipped Tom Andrews to mid-off to expose the lower order against the second new ball with the lights in full effect to brighten a dark grey sky.Winter returned to wreak havoc. He found the outside edge of Jimmy Peirson with a similar delivery to that which removed Labuschagne, swinging in and nipping away from the right hander from a good length. He nearly trapped Michael Neser lbw first ball with a full inswinger but got him a couple of overs later with one that swerved late back through the gate to finish with three wickets for the day.Street held firm reaching his maiden half-century in his debut innings with a lovely straight drive. The umpires decided the natural light had faded too much with two balls left in the 87th over and called an end to the day. Queensland will resume on day three with a slender lead of 21.

Leeds academy POTY who debuted under Bielsa is now playing in 4th tier

Leeds United youngsters Mateo Joseph and Archie Gray have emerged as first-team options for German head coach Daniel Farke in the Championship this season.

Gray, 18, has already racked up 33 starts in the division, with the majority of his appearances coming out of position at right-back, after being handed a chance by the boss at the start of the campaign.

There is no guarantee that either of them will go on to have successful careers at Elland Road, though, as the key for them is to now prove that they can be consistent over multiple seasons.

Archie Gray

Players have come through the academy in the past and made their first-team debuts, only to fail to prove themselves consistently and, as a result, drop down the league – as was the case with Robbie Gotts.

Robbie Gotts' Leeds career

The versatile ace, who can play all across midfield and in both full-back positions, came through the youth sides at Thorp Arch before Marcelo Bielsa handed him his first-team debut against Arsenal in January 2020.

Gotts endured a baptism of fire as he had to face off against the likes of Mesut Ozil and Granit Xhaka in central midfield during the FA Cup clash.

As you can see in the table above, the midfielder struggled throughout the game as he was sloppy in possession, weak in his duels, and did not provide any defensive protection for the back four.

His first-team debut and performances for the academy earned him the Academy Player of the Year award at Leeds for the 2019/20 season, which speaks to the progress he made that term.

However, Gotts only went on to play two more matches for Leeds – totalling 18 minutes across the Championship and League Cup – as the versatile gem seemingly failed to convince the manager that he deserved more opportunities, before being sent out on loan to Lincoln City and Salford during the 2020/21 campaign.

Where Robbie Gotts plays now

After his lower league loan spells, Bielsa and Victor Orta decided to sanction an exit for the now-24-year-old as they allowed him to join Barrow on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

Former Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa.

The former Whites academy graduate has made 116 appearances in all competitions for the club in almost three years to date, with the majority of those games coming in League Two.

This means that Gotts is currently playing in the fourth tier of English football, just over four years after he made his professional debut as a starter in midfield against Premier League giants Arsenal in the FA Cup for Leeds under Bielsa.

The 24-year-old whiz has started 19 of their league matches so far this season, and they are sat in sixth in League Two – in the play-off positions – as it stands.

Gotts may not have made a career for himself at the top level, yet, but he is still playing professional football in England after coming through the Leeds academy.

His story may, however, be a warning for Joseph and Gray as it shows that they have a long way to go before they can claim to have made it at Elland Road.

Ben Stokes pleaded with CEO to be restored as England vice-captain

Allrounder was restored as Joe Root’s deputy after text message to Tom Harrison

Ben Stokes’ reinstatement as England vice-captain ahead of this summer’s Ashes came after he pleaded directly to Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, according to details in his new autobiography.Stokes, who was stripped of the role in the wake of the incident outside a Bristol nightclub two years ago, missed England’s tour of Australia in 2017-18 as he awaited police charges following his arrest. However, going into this summer’s Ashes, and with his stock in the side restored following a series of eye-catching performances, both in the field and in training, Stokes decided he had “nothing to lose” in sending a text message to the ECB chief asking to be made Joe Root’s deputy once again.”Of the punishments I’d received in the aftermath of the Bristol incident, losing the Test vice-captaincy was what hurt the most,” Stokes wrote in his book, On Fire.”So I decided I would take the plunge. I sent a text message to Tom Harrison to inform him that I wanted to be Joe Root’s deputy once more. It certainly left him in no doubt how much I wanted things to revert to how they were previously.”Forty-eight hours later, I had Ashley Giles, the England managing director, in contact to offer me the position once more.”My reaction to being told that I had been reinstated was no more than ‘Cool’. But it meant the world to me. Believe me.”Harrison’s willingness to trust Stokes in a position of responsibility again perhaps stems from his comments soon after the Bristol incident, when he declared his desire to see England’s star player “rehabilitated in the field”.It followed, too, a glowing report from the then-England coach Trevor Bayliss on the tour of Sri Lanka last year, when Stokes had to be persuaded to ease up on his own training in the humid conditions.ALSO READ: ‘Bloody Warner’ inspired Stokes to Headingley miracleThe restored responsibility clearly had the desired effect for Stokes, whose century in the third Test at Headingley was hailed as one of the greatest Test innings of all time after England chased a stiff target of 359 to pull off a remarkable one-wicket win.In spite of his desire for greater responsibility within the team, Stokes is adamant that he wants to be Root’s right-hand man, rather than a captaincy rival – as he showed in the wake of England’s series-squaring win at The Oval when he threw his weight squarely behind Root’s leadership while accepting his Man of the Series award.”It [the England captaincy] is not an aspiration for me, currently,” Stokes said in a subsequent interview with the Times “It’s not something that I could ever say no to and it would be a great honour to be asked to do it, but right now it’s not an aspiration.”Joe Root is England captain and there is no one else better in the country to do the job. You could never say no to it, though. I hope it doesn’t happen and I hope Joe doesn’t lose it. I’ve got a very close relationship with Joe on and off the field and I could see the strain he was under.”The man who made way for Stokes as vice-captain was Jos Buttler, who also performs the same role to Eoin Morgan in the white-ball squad. However, he did not seem to be put out by the demotion when quizzed on the subject earlier this year.”When I did it last summer … they said to me in time they’d like Ben to do the role again when he can, so I was very aware that was the situation and natural thing to happen,” he said. “I’m delighted for Ben to be reinstated as vice-captain and it doesn’t really change a lot for me: I’m always willing to offer advice and I’m there if Joe wants to talk to me, as are a lot of other players in the team as well who aren’t vice-captain. It doesn’t change a lot.”

Newcastle showing serious interest in Barcelona’s Xavi to replace Howe

Newcastle United reportedly have serious interest in replacing Eddie Howe with an "incredible" manager this summer – one who has never finished lower than third place in a domestic league campaign.

Eddie Howe's Newcastle future in doubt

Howe has done a brilliant job at St James' Park overall, having come in and inherited a relegation-threatened side, only to change their fortunes in spectacular fashion. The Englishman guided his side back into the Champions League last season, by virtue of finishing fourth in the league, but things have been a lot harder this term.

Newcastle sit 10th in the Premier League table with 10 matches to go, meaning that European qualification of any kind is unlikely, and they also exited the Champions League at the group stage, with performances and results too often flattering to deceive.

Because of this, Howe has found himself under pressure of late, as the PIF decide whether or not they should look to dispose of him and find a big name replacement at the end of the season. Some reports have suggested that he will stay on even if the Magpies miss out on Europe, but that hasn't stopped potential successors being linked with the job.

Roberto De Zerbi has been linked with replacing Howe at St James' Park in the summer, as he continues to do an impressive job at Brighton, while Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is another name who has been thrown into the mix.

Bayern's Julian Nagelsmann

Now, another manager has emerged in the race to be the next man in charge at Newcastle, in what could be a real marquee appointment.

Newcastle seriously interested in "incredible" manager

According to HITC, Newcastle are showing "genuine and strong" interest in making Xavi their next manager, with the 44-year-old confirmed to be leaving Barcelona at the end of the season. The report says that Chelsea are also in the same position, however, should they decide to part ways with Mauricio Pochettino.

Xavi would certainly be an interesting appointment by Newcastle, even though it does seem more likely that Howe will remain in charge for now, with the Spaniard a huge figure in the game, having achieved such legendary status at Barcelona during his playing days.

It is dangerous hiring a boss who was only a big name as a player, but the former Spain World Cup winner has impressed in his managerial career as well, never finishing lower than third place across six seasons with two different clubs, not to mention winning the La Liga title with Barca last season.

On top of that, former teammate Andres Iniesta called him "incredible" earlier this season, especially in terms of his passion for the club, and his attacking 4-3-3 formation could go down well with Newcastle supporters.

£140,000 p/w Liverpool player offers himself to European club ahead of exit

Change is afoot at Anfield this summer. Not only is Jurgen Klopp calling time on an incredible nine-year spell at the club full of historic moments, but one of the players who have featured throughout the German's tenure are also now likely to be heading for the exit door in an emotional month in Liverpool.

Liverpool transfer news

Whilst the Reds' main priority will be to hand Klopp the ultimate farewell, which they didn't help with a shock 3-0 loss against Atalanta in the Europa League last night, they also need to focus some of their attention on planning and landing a replacement for their legendary manager. And that has seen Ruben Amorim emerge as the top candidate, despite his rather stubborn answers to questions about his Sporting CP future as of late.

Meanwhile, Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes will also need to assess the squad that Amorim, or another option, will have available next season, with at least one consistent feature set to leave in the form of Joel Matip.

Liverpool may have to drop 4/10 star after Atalanta horror show

It was a frustrating night for Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour.

ByJoe Nuttall Apr 12, 2024

The centre-back's £140k per-week contract is set to expire at the end of the season, leaving him open to negotiate with other clubs as a free agent. According to Sabah in Turkey, Matip has offered himself to Fenerbahce in pursuit of a potential summer switch but is only likely to be in a position to complete a move when his fitness is assessed after an ACL injury this season.

Winning it all at Anfield, there's no doubt that Matip has his place in the Liverpool history books.

"Smart" Matip hasn't got Anfield farewell he deserves

In many ways, the fact that Matip won't get his Anfield farewell on the pitch due to his biggest injury yet sums up his time at Liverpool, with spells on the sidelines often frustrating the defender. But at his best and when he has been available for long periods of time throughout his Liverpool career, it's no coincidence that the Reds have been at their rampant best on most occasions.

A winner of the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Club World Cup and Super Cup, Matip bows out in a position to say mission accomplished in English football.

Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip

He will be among those who will forever be underrated, but not by Klopp, who once said after Matip surprisingly won the Premier League's Player of the Month award in the 2021/22 season: "Who votes for it? Was it his mum? The Premier League? A panel? I think I criticised the Premier League quite frequently, but I have to say now; you have made worse decisions!

"Believe me, if there is one person on this planet who couldn't care less if we all under-rate him, it's Joel Matip! Honestly. He doesn't even realise, probably. He's just happy to be here with these boys. He's a really smart person, but not in there kind of things. He never thinks, 'my God, I should have another status' or whatever. Not at all."
