Veteran seam bowler Mitch Claydon will leave Kent for Sussex at the end of this season.Sussex head coach Jason Gillespie said the 36-year-old Claydon would bring a wealth of experience to his squad. “We have been looking to secure an experienced seamer for the short term to add depth to our bowling stocks and Mitch fits the bill perfectly. His experience and knowledge will be valuable in our dressing room.”He is an important part of our plan for our seam bowling department. We are also seeking a younger, more long-term signing to complement our current bowling stocks.”Originally from Sydney, Claydon used his British passport to join Yorkshire, where he played alongside Gillespie in 2006. Claydon moved to Durham, where he was part of the Championship-winning sides of 2008, 2009 and 2013. A successful loan stint at Kent in 2013 led to a seven-year association with the club, where he was reunited with Gillespie in 2017 when the latter became an interim assistant coach.Having helped Kent win promotion to the Championship’s top division in 2018 and reach the final of the Royal London One-Day Cup the same year, Claydon was not offered a contract extension beyond this season.Claydon said: “After playing with Dizzy in my first year in England and spending time with him when he was with Kent, I’m really excited to be playing under him again. I still feel as though I have plenty to offer and look forward to hopefully putting in some match-winning performances for Sussex.”I’d like to give a huge thank you to all my coaches and team-mates over the past seven years at Kent. I’ve made memories and friends for life in the Garden of England.”Kent Head Coach Matt Walker said Claydon had been “an outstanding servant” to the club. “He’s also produced some great performances for us, whether that be in red-ball cricket or at the death in limited-overs formats. He’s been a real match winner for Kent on the field and a true champion off it. He’ll be hugely missed.”

Ravi Rampaul picks up 3 for 19 and defends 16 off last over as Derbyshire secure last-eight spot

Perhaps it was the gorgeous Bank Holiday weather; maybe it was the opportunity to see a Lancashire side which is excellent T20 form at present; quite possibly it was what we shall soon have to call “the Stokes effect”. But whatever the cause or combination of causes 14,752 spectators turned up at Old Trafford this Monday afternoon, most of them hoping to see the home side clinch top spot in the North Group of the Vitality Blast. And as is so often cricket’s endearing way, Lancashire’s record crowd for a non-Roses T20 match saw Derbyshire secure their place in the last eight with a thoroughly deserved 11-run victory. There is therefore still a chance that the county coached this season by Dominic Cork will qualify for their first Finals’ Day, although they will certainly be away in the quarter-finals.One doubts that prospect will daunt Billy Godleman’s team. Lancashire have been arguably the most powerful team in this year’s Blast but Derbyshire gave as good as they received. First they posted a competitive 162 for 3 and then they defended that total with a fielding display which was far from faultless but was still competent in the later overs when it mattered. When Lancashire needed 75 off eight overs and Liam Livingstone was going well, the odds were on a home win but Livingstone was caught at the wicket by Daryn Smit for 58 as he attempted to cut Alex Hughes and none of the succeeding batsmen could stay long enough to see their side home. The run out of Dane Vilas for 19 off the first ball of the 18th over when 28 runs were still needed was clearly crucial. The result was more or less decided by the start of the last over but Ravi Rampaul picked up the wicket of Liam Hurt with the final ball of the match and added it to those of Steven Croft and Josh Bohannon, whom he had dismissed with successive deliveries in the early exchanges.Derbyshire’s victory was all the more impressive given that their total looked no better than par on wicket which played well, albeit it was a used pitch. Indeed, having been 96 for 1 after 12 overs and 112 without further loss after 14, Derbyshire may have expected more than their eventual 162 but their limited progress can partly be explained by the fact that three of those later overs were bowled by James Faulkner. The problem for Derbyshire was that they lost their two main scorers within six balls of each other at a crucial point in their innings. Having made 69 off 39 balls, a tally that included three leg-side sixes, Wayne Madsen was caught by Danny Lamb off Glenn Maxwell when attempting a paddle sweep. Five balls later Godleman, the country’s leading scorer in white-ball cricket this season, hit Matt Parkinson straight to Livingstone at long-off and departed for 57. The later batsmen found it difficult to accelerate but Cork’s Derbyshire are a hard-working team and will be a match for anyone their meet in the last eight.Nor did the home supporters seem particularly disappointed by what is only Lancashire’s second defeat in the Blast this season. The good humour and general bonhomie following the Headingley Test was very clear across the Pennines this afternoon and was shown at its most trivial when a bloke on a sofa in the Thomas Cook attempted to catch one of Livingstone’s sixes and not only failed to do so but also fell backwards with the furniture toppling over on top of him. How everybody roared.More seriously there was a mood that cricket was a game which had even more reason to be proud of itself after the third Ashes Test. “Stand up if you love Ben Stokes,” sang the crowd for no more reason than that they wished to do so. The next Test begins here a week on Wednesday and it is all but certain that the country’s new hero will receive a standing ovation when he walks out to bat in England’s first innings. This thing will run and run.The quarter-finals of the Vitality Blast are due to be played during the Manchester Test, so although Lancashire have qualified for a home game, they will travel to Stokes’ home patch up at Chester-le-Street. Derbyshire, on the other hand, have won their last three Blast games and do not mind where they go next as long as their journey ends at Edgbaston on September 21, preferably late in the evening and with a trophy in Godleman’s hands.

Leeds United have been dealt a "massive problem" after it emerged that their "technically gifted" star will miss the upcoming clash with current Championship leaders Leicester City after picking up yet another injury.
Leeds chasing down promotion
Relegated from the Premier League last season, Leeds are eyeing an immediate return to the top flight, but are being pushed all the way in what is one of the highest quality chasing packs in second tier history.
Daniel Farke's side have lost just six times all season and boast the best joint-best defensive record in the competition, but remain in a close-fought battle to ensure that they manage to occupy an automatic promotion spot come May, and now face a Leicester City side that have swept all before them so far this season.
In second place, Leeds are likely to be looking down rather than up as it stands. They sit nine points behind Friday's opponents with 13 games of the season left to play, but sit level with Ipswich (3rd) and just two points ahead of Southampton (4th) in what is shaping up to be a tightly-fought end to the season.

A win over Leicester would allow them some breathing room, but defeat could see them slip out of the automatic promotion spots over the weekend, and could leave them looking at the prospect of the play-off lottery, with one of the four leading sides in England's second tier guaranteed to still be in it come the beginning of next season.

Bamford out of Leicester clash
The Elland Road outfit have seen their preparation for the top-of-the-table clash with the Foxes disrupted through injury, and it star man Patrick Bamford who is set to be forced to sit out the home match against the league leaders.
Bamford was once considered one of the shining talents of English football, but has seen his recent career ruined by injury. The 30-year-old has managed just six Championship starts so far this season, and only made his first on New Year's Day.
In the games since though, he has found form with four goals and an assist to help Leeds in their long winning run, leading to rumours Bamford is one of several Leeds stars in line for a new contract.
Patrick Bamford in action for Leeds United.
Now former Rangers and Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has had his say, with the BBC pundit backing Bamford to come back stronger despite yet another setback but ruing his seemingly injury-prone nature.
“It’s been a massive problem for him,” Hutton told Football Insider.
“Injuries have been a huge issue for Bamford through the years and it’s not ideal for him considering his form. But there’s nothing he can do about it. He can’t tell when he’s going to get injured and it’s just a real shame for him. We all know he can be an outstanding football player and has been recently."
“He’s technically gifted and I think he will come back as strong. But as soon as he hits form, he seems to get injured."
It is not all bad news for Bamford, and fortunately the injury doesn't seem too serious this time around, with Leeds boss Farke revealing that the striker will 'definitely' be fit for the FA Cup fifth-round clash with Chelsea in a week.
Accuracy, allied to early swing, were the key factors in an impressive collective bowling display by the visitors

Northamptonshire 357 (Keogh 132, Rossington 63, Davis 4-73) and 22 for 0 need 119 more runs to beat Leicestershire 308 and 189 (Ackermann 60)Northamptonshire, with all ten second innings wickets in hand, need just 119 more runs to complete victory, and possibly move into second place in the second division, after bowling Leicestershire out for 189 in their second innings.Accuracy, allied to early swing, were the key factors in an impressive collective bowling display by the visitors, who won eight leg before wicket decisions from umpires Billy Taylor and Paul Pollard, equalling the world record in an innings in first-class cricket.Eight leg-before decisions in an innings have occurred in eight previous first class matches. The morning had seen Northants resume their first innings on 325 for 7, but lose their last three wickets in adding only 32 runs. Gareth Berg may have been a touch unfortunate to be given out leg before on the front foot to Will Davis: if so, fortune favoured the batsman when Davis’ next delivery hit Brett Hutton’s off-stump without dislodging the bail.Hutton didn’t last much longer however, edging a Chris Wright out-swinger to wicketkeeper Harry Swindells. Doug Bracewell hit out to some effect, hooking Wright dismissively to the straight midwicket boundary, but the New Zealander’s attempt to loft Davis straight back over the bowler’s head was well held by Mark Cosgrove two-handed to his left at mid-on.Leicestershire’s reply began badly when Paul Horton padded up to his first delivery from Sanderson and was palpably leg before, a second duck in the match for the Foxes’ skipper, while fellow opener Hassan Azad steered a rising delivery from Gareth Berg to first slip, where Alex Wakely held the chance two-handed at chest height to leave Leicestershire on 20 for 2.They needed a big stand between the experienced Cosgrove and Colin Ackermann, but Hutton pinned Cosgrove with an in-swinger before Sanderson’s full, straight delivery accounted for George Rhodes.Ackermann went on to make a half-century, but he too stepped across the line and missed when attempting to turn Hutton into the leg-side, and no further runs had been added when Swindells went in the same manner to Bracewell.Callum Parkinson and Neil Dexter added 51 for the seventh wicket before Parkinson saw the finger raised to a delivery that would have gone on to hit off stump, while the delivery that saw the end of Dexter was adjudged to have brushed his pad before hitting the middle of a defensive bat.Davis was next to go, to Bracewell, but with breaking the world record a possibility, Procter bowled Wright. In the circumstances, Northamptonshire may not be too dismayed.

Glasgow Rangers retained their place at the top of the Scottish Premiership table in spite of their 2-1 loss to Motherwell at Ibrox on Saturday.
They offered their closest rivals a chance to leapfrog them with that defeat but Celtic were also beaten, 2-0 by Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday, over the weekend.
Philippe Clement's side lacked a ruthless edge in their match as they failed to convert from open play despite dominating the possession and chances, which suggests that the injury to Todd Cantwell, who has been clinical in front of goal, has been a big blow.
The former Norwich City star suffered a hamstring injury in February that is set to keep him out of action until the international break later this month, as it was projected that he would be out for three-to-four weeks.
Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell.
This means that the English whiz is likely to miss both of the club's clashes with Portuguese giants Benfica in the knockout stages of the Europa League this month.
Cantwell's absence was felt in the loss to Motherwell and Rangers could have done with one of their former stars – who is currently out on loan – to ease the blow of losing him, as Ianis Hagi was once a key performer for Steven Gerrard at Ibrox.
Rangers' attacking statistics against Motherwell
The Light Blues were not shy of pulling the trigger as they registered a whopping 31 shot attempts from their 70% possession against Motherwell.
Only 11 of those were on target, though, and they only scored one goal in the game, which came from the penalty spot as James Tavernier converted from the spot in the 60th minute.
This means that they failed to find the back of the net from their 30 non-penalty shots and ten non-penalty shots on target as they went on to lose 2-1 to the away side, who had five efforts on target in total.
Mohammed Diomande was moved into an attacking midfield position in the absence of Cantwell, and with Tom Lawrence on the bench, but failed to make the most of his opportunity to play further up the pitch, having previously impressed in a deeper role.
The Ivorian talent failed to score from his two shots on target and none of the four chances he created for his teammates represented a 'big chance' to score, which suggests that the quality of his key passes were not very high.
This suggests that Clement sorely missed his usual number ten option, as the deadline day signing could not step up to adequately fill in for the former Norwich star in that role.
The stats that show Rangers why missed Cantwell
The 26-year-old magician had been on fire for the Scottish giants prior to his current injury blow, which makes his absence all the more frustrating for the Gers.
Cantwell had stepped up as both a scorer and a creator for the side as an attacking midfielder, with three goals and three 'big chances' created in his last six Premiership appearances.

As you can see in the table above, the Rangers star consistently made an impact at the top end of the pitch with goals and high-quality chances created.
He had also been clinical in front of goal with zero 'big chances' missed. In fact, Cantwell has scored five goals from an Expected Goals (xG) of 4.01 in the Premiership this season, which shows that he has been above average as a finisher based on the quality of opportunities that have been created for him.
These statistics, along with his return of six goals in 15 league starts for Rangers last season, suggest that he has the ruthless nature in front of goal that the Light Blues lacked in the defeat to Motherwell.
His absence may not have been as much of a blow, however, if they had Hagi at his peak as an option to call upon, as the Romania international was a Premiership star before his injury issues.
The stats that show why Ianis Hagi was like Cantwell
The attacking midfielder, who was loaned out to Deportivo Alaves at the start of this season by Michael Beale, was a wizard under Gerrard during the 2020/21 title-winning campaign.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old maestro made a big impact at the top end of the pitch with 18 direct goal contributions in just 23 starts as the Gers won the league.
He topped the assist charts for the Light Blues, with two more than any other player in the squad, whilst Ryan Kent (ten) was the only attacking midfielder or winger with more goals than him.
These statistics show that the Romanian dynamo was a key performer for Gerrard, who described him as an "absolute dream" to work with, as he was a difference-maker – like Cantwell is now – in the final third with his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals for the Scottish giants.
Blast from the Past
Football FanCast's Blast from the Past series takes a trip down memory lane. Do any of your classic icons of days gone by fit into a modern-day starting XI?
Unfortunately, Hagi, who was signed for £4.5m from Genk in 2020, suffered a horrendous knee injury midway through the following campaign that ultimately kept him out of action for over a year, and for 69 competitive Rangers games.
He only played eight league matches under Beale after his return in January 2023 before being sent out on loan to Spain ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.
As it stands, the former Genk whiz has scored two goals and provided one assist in 20 competitive games for Alaves. The Rangers loanee is, clearly, still trying to get back to his best after such a horrific injury that kept him out for so long.
At the age of 25, hopefully Hagi will eventually get back to the form he displayed during the 2020/21 season, whether that is at Ibrox or elsewhere.
Clement could have used his quality – given his impressive record of goals and assists in the Premiership for Gerrard – against Motherwell on Saturday to ease the blow of losing Cantwell.
Instead, the Gers boss will have to find alternative solutions over the coming weeks before the former Norwich dynamo returns to action.
