South Africa’s anxious wait for an update on Dale Steyn’s injured right shoulder continues, but the fast bowler has seen a specialist in Cape Town since his early return from the IPL. In two weeks, the Proteas will meet for a pre-World Cup camp, and the selectors have until May 23 to name a potential replacement – if Steyn is not fully fit by then.”As it stands, we are aware that Dale Steyn has seen the shoulder specialist since he got back from India,” National Selection Panel convener Linda Zondi told ESPNcricinfo. “But at the moment we’re just waiting for our medical team to keep us updated in terms of his progress. He’s still due to meet up with the team for camp on the 12th, and as the selection panel, we’ll be guided by the medical team, and then we’ll take it from there.”Zondi said the coach Ottis Gibson will be part of the decision making as well. “Ottis is also a specialist from the bowling point of view, so he will definitely take Dale for a run in the nets to see how he’s doing with his shoulder and how far he might have to go. We still have enough time before the 23rd of May to decide whether we need to change the team or not. But for now that’s where we are.”Steyn, 35, played two matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore before his right shoulder – which has previously been seriously injured – flared up. He had already been named in South Africa’s World Cup squad, and had been expected to lead the attack alongside Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi, with Anrich Nortje as back-up.Nortje is himself recovering from injury and told ESPNcricinfo that he bowled six overs in a match against the touring Afghanistan Academy team last week and that he is “still busy with rehab and building and getting closer to bowling fitness. Really happy with how things have gone but still have a bit of work to do”.Ngidi, who has been recovering from a Grade II muscle strain in his side, also got some overs in his legs against the touring Afghanistan side. JP Duminy’s rehabilitation from shoulder surgery continues, and he has returned to competitive action with the Cape Cobras at the tail end of the CSA T20 Challenge. Definitive news on Steyn, however, is yet to emerge, and in the meantime CSA have potential replacements on stand-by – though they don’t want to say exactly who just yet.

Celtic open talks to sign another new attacker alongside Nicolas Kuhn

Celtic are well underway regarding their transfer business and have now reportedly opened talks to bring a striker to Parkhead this month as Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his squad.

Celtic's transfer priorities…

Scottish Premiership champions the Hoops will be optimistic that they can retain their crown this campaign by the time all is said and done in May; however, Rodgers will know that his side's activity on the transfer front this month will go a long way to deciding the destination of the Scottish title.

In all honesty, the Hoops have been quiet in the market so far, like is the case with many clubs at this stage in the campaign, though Rapid Vienna winger Nicolas Kuhn looks set to be their first addition of the window. Finer details of the deal are currently under discussion and the 24-year-old has missed out on a mid-season camp friendly against Weiner SC to keep himself fit before moving to Glasgow.

Celtic to spring out of nowhere for “flamboyant” £3.4m target – report

It’s been quiet on the transfer front for months, but Celtic could now come alive.

ByDavid Comerford Jan 13, 2024

Taking to social media platform X, Football Scotland journalist Mark Hendry has indicated that reinforcements at left-back and centre-forward could be next on the agenda at Parkhead.

Reports elsewhere claim that Bologna will look to part ways with Dutch striker Sydney van Hooijdonk after they take on Cagliari in Serie A on Sunday and Celtic have been mentioned as his potential next destination. Now, another striker has entered the frame as a source of goals Rodgers could look to acquire in the January transfer window, according to a fresh report.

Celtic open Mathias Kvistgaarden talks…

According to Football Insider, Celtic have opened talks with Brondby regarding striker Mathias Kvistgaarden amid their need to add further attacking options due to Oh Hyeon-gyu, Daizen Maeda and Yang Hyun-jun being away on Asian Cup duty.

The outlet claim the versatile 21-year-old has emerged as an option due to his standout performances in Denmark this campaign and could be accompanied by a central midfielder in Glasgow, with Rodgers keen to also boost his options in the engine room.

Labelled "fantastic" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the Denmark Under-21 international has registered seven goals and seven assists in 21 appearances across all competitions this term (Kvistgaarden statistics – Transfermarkt).

Celtic are in need of a different avenue to utilise in attack over the next few weeks and Kvistgaarden could provide some firm competition for Kyogo Furuhashi if he does indeed move to Glasgow this month, making this one to watch.

Shubman Gill leads KKR to stay alive, Kings XI knocked out

Sam Curran’s unbeaten 55 off 24 had given Kings XI a competitive total but KKR’s top order make short work of it

The Report by Danyal Rasool03-May-2019

Shubman Gill was the aggressor in a brisk partnership with Andre Russell•BCCI

The most pleasing thing about this game were the cameos – the half-century on either side, one score in the high 40s apiece, and – for good measure – an eye-catching cameo from Andre Russell. In a game brimming with high-class batting, Kings XI Punjab set Kolkata Knight Riders what looked a challenging target of 184. Nicholas Pooran’s 27-ball 48 – half of it coming in sixes – saw Kings XI on top early on, before a sumptuously intelligent 24-ball 55 not out from Sam Curran helped his side power to 183. Sunil Narine and Sandeep Warrier had stifled the innings through the Powerplay, but Kings XI’s success at building partnerships following the early dismissals of Chris Gayle and KL Rahul ensured they remained on track to post a competitive total. It was then something of a pity the bowlers couldn’t back that up and deliver the result Kings XI so desperately needed to keep realistic hopes of qualification alive. Chris Lynn has found himself in a run of form his side had desperately needed after losing their way through the group stages, with four half-centuries in the last seven innings. He fell four short of that mark today, but in 28 destructive balls, he had helped Knight Riders to 62 in the Powerplay. From thereon, Shubman Gill took over.Ensuring Lynn’s wicket did not result in a slump of the run rate, Gill worked the field expertly for the next six overs or so, with the occasional risk paying off. Handy contributions from Robin Uthappa and Russell helped, but it was Gill’s unbeaten 65 that saw Knight Riders all the way through, and while the game ended two overs early, the outcome – seven-wicket Knight Riders win – had been clear for the best part of the final hour.Shubman’s teenage kicksIt’s fair to say Shubnam came into this year’s IPL with something of a reputation to defend, having already made his international debut a few weeks ago. The way the tournament panned out hadn’t quite matched the hype though, with a pair of half-centuries interspersed with a string of underwhelming scores. Tonight, he allowed Chris Lynn to do the early damage while biding his time at the other end, and by the end of the 12th over, Gill had accumulated just 34 off 31.It was only then that he saw fit to launch, with no less than R Ashwin the chosen target for the teenager’s aggression. He charged Ashwin’s first ball to loft it in the air over long-on. A second six went over backward square leg two balls later, and the half-century was brought up with a late cut that would have had the MCC members purring on the first morning of a Test match. Even as the wickets fell at the other end, Knight Riders’ youngest team member had assumed the role of senior player, and eventually saw them through to the end.Curran’s cerebral knockTwenty-year-old Sam Curran’s fresh-faced demeanour and slight build aren’t exactly redolent of a typical power hitter, but in conjuring up that absorbing unbeaten 24-ball 55, he managed the best strike rate across an innings for Kings XI all season. Each ball was like a chess move, and Curran was one step ahead most of the way. He used his feet to scoop over fine leg, took the pace of the bowler in his strike to whack him over the top, and found angles to manoeuvre the ball into gaps Ashwin might have thought were impossible to pierce. The final over from Harry Gurney was such an astonishing display of mental dominance over the bowler it became impossible to tell whether Gurney was bowling badly or Curran playing the innings of the season. The last six balls yielded 22 as a discombobulated Gurney knew not which variation to try, and in the moment, it appeared to have powered Kings XI to a total that looked slightly above par.Gayle gone earlyPerhaps the most telling blow struck all evening was executed in the first 15 minutes. In a game that would see several players produce vital knocks, a half hour at the crease for Chris Gayle might have been enough to see Kings XI home. Instead, a pair of boundaries in the first over was his lot as Gayle struggles with Gurney’s varied pace and Narine’s guile, with the big man getting frustrated at his failure to find the middle of his bat more regularly. Sandeep Warrier, who had a couple of overs ago sent KL Rahul back to the pavilion, pitched one short of a length to Gayle. It was perhaps shorter than intended, and Gayle would have backed himself to clear the ropes. But with what had happened in the first three overs, Gayle jabbed at the ball early, eager to get himself going. The fielder at deep-backward square had been positioned exactly for that scenario, and it was the first of a number of plans that came together for a Knight Riders’ side that suddenly appear up and running in the tournament again.

Joe Root and Jason Roy star as Afghanistan feel England's full power

Afghanistan powerless to resist after being rolled aside for 160, as England win with more than 32 overs to spare

Hemant Brar27-May-2019After stumbling against Australia in their first warm-up game, England returned to winning ways on the back of three-wicket hauls from Jofra Archer and Joe Root, and a blazing half-century from Jason Roy as they trounced Afghanistan by nine wickets at The Oval on Monday.Right from the toss, everything went England’s way. Under cloudy skies, their seamers took out Afghanistan’s top order, before Root and a couple of run-outs took care of the middle and the lower order. And despite Mohammad Nabi’s 44, Afghanistan were bundled out for 160 in 38.4 overs.A target of 161 was never going to challenge one of the strongest ODI batting line-ups of all time. And as expected, England romped to victory in just 17.3 overs, with Roy leading the way with an unbeaten 89 off just 46 balls, with 11 fours and four sixes. In all, it was a perfect outing for England, and a bit of a reality check for Afghanistan after their win against Pakistan last week.Jason Roy carves another boundary through the off side•Getty Images

Earlier, in the absence of Mohammad Shahzad, who was rested, Noor Ali Zadran opened the innings with Hazratullah Zazai and it looked as though luck was on his side. In the second over of the innings, Noor Ali dabbed Chris Woakes towards backward point and set off for a single, but a brilliant stop by Roy had him stranded halfway down the pitch. But fortunately for him, Roy missed the direct hit. On the very next ball, he was given caught-behind but got the decision overturned as replays confirmed the ball had only brushed his elbow. At the other end, Zazai had little answer to Archer’s pace and bounce, with the batsman invariably shuffling towards the leg side to deal with his 140kph-plus offerings. Taking his eyes off the ball, he top-edged a bouncer to fine leg for four, then dispatched the next ball, once again a touch short, over cover-point for another boundary. But in his next over, Archer switched to around the wicket, Zazai went for the pull but the angle meant the batsman was cramped and the top edge was pouched by Moeen at mid-on.Another short ball from Archer, a legcutter, brought an end to Rahmat Shah’s innings as he failed to execute the pull and Liam Plunkett accepted the dolly at mid-on.With all the short stuff from the other end, Noor Ali failed to get forward to a pitched-up delivery from Ben Stokes. Stuck on the crease, he was late to get his bat down as the ball clattered into the stumps off the inside edge. Afghanistan were 49 for 3 in the 12th over.It was then Root’s turn to roll his arm over. Primarily an offbreak bowler, Root sent down quite a few legbreaks and reaped the rewards as well. Asghar Afghan survived against Stokes and Tom Curran but as soon as Root was introduced, he tried to cut loose. Root’s first ball was a full toss which was gently pushed down the ground. The next one was a dipping offbreak. Asghar looked to smash it over long-on, only to hit it straight to Roy.A few overs later, Root came back to dismiss Rashid Khan for a first-ball duck with a legbreak. In between the two dismissals, Hashmatullah Shahidi and Najibullah Zadran were run out, and captain Gulbadin Naib fell to Moeen Ali. Root then accounted for Aftab Alam as well to reduce Afghanistan to 127 for 9.Coming in at No. 8, Nabi once again showed how good a player of spin bowling he is. He smashed Moeen down the ground and over deep midwicket, while Adil Rashid was lofted inside-out over extra cover, all three hits clearing the boundary line with ease. He eventually fell to Archer while trying to cut one over third man but Jonny Bairstow kept his calm despite a bit of juggle, stepping over the boundary line and back again, to complete the catch to end Afghanistan’s innings. In reply, Bairstow and Roy attacked from the first ball and took 32 from the first three overs. In absence of Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naib turned to Rashid as early as the fourth over of the innings. Roy cut Rashid’s first ball past point for four, the legspinner going for nine in his first over.Of late, especially in the IPL, Rashid has found it difficult to take wickets at the rate he is used to. And that proved true today as well. He conceded 32 from his five overs, without picking up a wicket.Nabi replaced Rashid and almost bagged Roy with his very first ball, but Dawlat Zadran put down the catch at mid-off. Later in the over, Roy smashed the bowler for a four and a six. Nabi though responded by having Bairstow stumped in his next over, off an arm ball, to break a 77-run opening stand that had spanned a mere 44 balls.Roy kept going for his shots and took the side to 100 in ten overs. Root also had a decent stay at the crease, scoring 29 off 37, and the two men carried England to a comfortable win.

Offers tabled as reliable reporter shares exciting Sunderland transfer news

Dropping from a side on course to gain a place in the Championship's top six to a side who now find themselves behind the chasing pack, Sunderland's decision to sack Tony Mowbray in favour of Michael Beale looks more and more regretful by the day. But the former Rangers boss could yet turn things around with some offers reportedly tabled for crucial reinforcements this month.

Sunderland transfer news

After a start to forget under Beale, Sunderland fans have at least received the positive reports of a potential new contract at the club. According to club sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, Alex Pritchard has been offered a new contract by the Black Cats and could yet put pen to paper on a deal to extend his stay. When it comes to fresh faces, however, the news hasn't been so positive, with those at The Stadium of Light yet to welcome a single reinforcement for Beale. With just under a week remaining in the January window though, that could still change.

According to Scott Wilson of The Northern Echo, Sunderland have tabled four offers for potential arrivals before the end of the month, with two of those being loan deals and the other two being permanent. Speakman confirmed the news that the Black Cats are still seeking additions, saying via The Northern Echo: "We've definitely got a couple of priority positions that we've spent a lot of time and focus on, and you've referenced a couple of them there (left-back and striker).

EFL Championship done deals: Every January 2024 transfer

As the January transfer window closes, FFC has you covered for every in and out involving your club in the EFL Championship.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

"We’re always looking across the squad as you have to do in every window, both for who can complement the team and be in the squad, and those who can come in and complement what we’re trying to do as a football club.

"Everyone recognises that the market is slow at the moment, there’s been a very small number of deals in the Championship. We’ve got a couple of permanent offers on the table, a couple of loan offers. We’re waiting on other clubs and that's slightly frustrating, but you have to respect that if players are registered to other clubs, it’s their decision.

"It’s not in our control, it’s about timing and squad management for other clubs. At the minute, finances aren’t stopping us doing anything. It’s about needing the market to free up and players to become available – that’s where we sit.”

Players Sunderland could sign in January

Whilst Speakman failed to give away any hints regarding just who those reported four offers are regarding this month, Sunderland have been linked with a number of players. Among those mentioned in reports have been Skelly Alvero, Callum Styles and even a shock move for Amad Diallo, who previously starred at The Stadium of Light.

Manchester United forward Amad Diallo.

As the days tick by, Sunderland fans could get more of a clue as to who will arrive to steer Beale's tenure in the right direction. It certainly looks as though the new manager will be backed this month, perhaps only piling on the pressure for him to finally make an impact.
