Wolverhampton Wanderers are in the market to boost their squad depth in January and Gary O'Neil is now said to be targeting a player with previous experience of playing in England, according to a report.
Wolverhampton Wanderers look to January…
Despite being hamstrung in the summer by Financial Fair Play restrictions that led to the eventual departure of former boss Julen Lopetegui, Wolves were able to get some late business over the line to ensure an element of freshness was present in their squad heading into the first half of the campaign.
Nevertheless, January could be a busy month for the Old Gold in the market as O'Neil looks to ensure his side's healthy buffer between themselves and the relegation zone remains intact. Last week, The Telegraph reported that a striker and a winger will take precedence regarding incomings at Molineux, with Viktoria Plzen attacker Rafiu Durosinmi believed to be a target that could cost in the region of £7 million.
Meanwhile, outcast Fabio Silva, fellow striking option Sasa Kalajdzic and experienced defender Jonny Otto could leave the club in the same month following limited game time this season.
O'Neil could land dream Dawson replacement in Wolves move for 6ft 1 "monster"
Wolves may be looking to complete a few signings next month to bolster their squad.
ByRoss Kilvington Dec 23, 2023
Information regarding the former's potential next move has come to light, with TEAMtalk reporting that Silva is attracting interest from north of the border from Celtic and Rangers, who would both be keen on sanctioning a loan deal for the out-of-favour striker in January.
Any deal to take Silva to either of Glasgow's big two would hinge on a percentage of his £80,000 per week wages being covered, though he is keen to ensure his development is furthered by playing regularly in the second half of 2023/24. Now, Wolves could be set to target a defensive reinforcement as O'Neil courts squad depth once the January transfer window opens for business.
Wolves want Bright Osayi-Samuel
According to TEAMtalk, Wolves have seemingly made contact by expressing their interest over a move to sign Fenerbache right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel, although he is also on the radar of Leeds United and Crystal Palace, with the Eagles the team leading the way at this moment in time.

The Nigeria international would be attracted to the possibility of returning to England, this time in the Premier League, after spending two years in Turkey following his previous spell on British shores with Queens Park Rangers. Out of contract in 2025, the 25-year-old could also be available for a modest fee if he fails to agree new terms with Fenerbache.
Fenerbahce defender Bright Osayi-Samuel.
Labelled "dangerous" by former manager Mark Warburton, Osayi-Samuel has registered two goals and four assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this term (Osayi-Samuel statistics – Transfermarkt).
Wolves have a fairly thin squad due to their recruitment issues in the summer, with only two senior right-back options, so bringing in the Okija-born man could help to add defensive solidity and attacking prowess on the right-hand side of O'Neil's backline.
Cummins was rested for the one-day series against India with the two Tests against Sri Lanka in mind, but he is desperate not to miss any more white-ball cricket ahead of the World Cup

Pat Cummins is not about to use his elevated role as vice-captain to try and force his way into the new-ball role in Australia’s Test team, but is eager not to be rested again between now and a packed season in England which includes the World Cup and Ashes.Cummins, who was promoted to vice-captain alongside Travis Head before the Brisbane Test, claimed career-best match and innings figures against Sri Lanka – 6 for 23 and 10 for 62 overall – as he spearheaded Australia’s charge to an innings victory well inside three days.It was the continuation of an impressive season for Cummins, who was the standout Australia quick during the India series, and he has now risen to a career-high No. 3 in the ICC world rankings, behind Kagiso Rabada and James Anderson. He has 90 wickets in 19 Tests at 22.47 and will be vital to both Australia’s Ashes and World Cup hopes later this year. There is a strong argument to say that his success this season should see him elevated to the new-ball role in the Test team with Mitchell Starc below his best as he went none for 57 in the second innings off 14 overs. However, Cummins was more than comfortable watching debutant Jhye Richardson take the role ahead of him in Brisbane even though his new vice-captaincy role may give him some sway.ALSO READ: The puzzle of Mitchell’s stark struggles”Someone like Jhye, as soon as he came in, I was saying he has got a beautiful seam and has to get the new rock,” Cummins said. “To be honest, I’m pretty happy with my role. I feel like our new-ball bowlers have always done a really good job. When Starcy is on you just feel like he is going to rip through. You saw him against India, both their openers got dropped because we start off really well with the new ball. So, I’m always really happy to come on, itching to get the ball in my hand, but I am happy to wait a few overs.”There was a tantalising glimpse of what Cummins can achieve with an almost-new ball when he came on in the sixth over of Sri Lanka’s second innings and produced a superb final over on the second day, which ended with the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne. He then began on the third day alongside Richardson, with Starc forced to wait his turn, and Cummins picked up three wickets before he conceded a run.”I love to get the ball in my hands in those times but I think overall the new-ball bowlers always do a great job so my job hitting the deck. I do that pretty well and they open the bowling pretty well,” he said.Pat Cummins exults after picking up a wicket•Getty Images
Cummins was rested for the one-day series against India – along with Starc and Josh Hazlewood, the latter then diagnosed with back injury – with the two Tests against Sri Lanka in mind, but he is desperate not to miss any more white-ball cricket ahead of the World Cup. Australia head to India in mid-February for two T20Is and five ODIs followed by five more ODIs against Pakistan in the UAE.”After the [Canberra] game there are two ODI tours and hopefully I am on them and a couple of T20s as well,” he said. “ODIs are a lighter load than Tests and then most of April is off leading into the English summer so we’ll wait and see. Hopefully I will play most of those but I had a good two-week break after the last series so I feel pretty fresh.”Cummins missed the two Tests against Pakistan in the UAE last year with back injury, but with just one more Test to go against Sri Lanka he is on track to get through two full home seasons which, given his injury history earlier in his career, is a commendable effort.Despite a brittle-looking Sri Lanka batting order, it could be harder work in Canberra. Cummins was expecting less help from the surface than in Brisbane and suggested reverse swing, something which didn’t become a factor in the first Test but that Australia struggled to find against India, would be a key factor.”I know in Manuka we are going to have really different conditions. We played a Shield game there earlier this year and it was a pretty good wicket but probably more reverse than traditional swing.”
Essex batsman set to play for MCC in Abu Dhabi curtain-raiser, knowing it’s all up for grabs this summer

Tom Westley drives off the back foot•Getty Images
It’s all up for grabs at the top of England’s Test batting order. Yet another series has come and gone – this time a 2-1 defeat in the Caribbean – with none of the incumbents making a definitive case for retention going into this summer’s Ashes.Tom Westley knows that feeling well. It’s been nigh on two years since Westley made the last of his five Test appearances in the summer of 2017. In nine innings against against South Africa and West Indies, he managed a solitary half-century at an average of 24.12 before being dropped for that winter’s Ashes campaign. But, having this week celebrated his 30th birthday on Essex’s pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi, Westley has not given up hope of earning himself a second chance at Test level – especially with nearly four months of county cricket in which to hone his form before England’s next Test engagement, against Ireland on July 24.”It’s quite exciting, not only for myself but a lot of county cricketers,” Westley told ESPNcricinfo. “If an individual scores three, four, five hundreds early in the season, they are going to be spoken about to play for England. That’s everyone’s goal, and my goal personally is to play for England again, but the only way to do that is to score those runs.”Two years older and wiser, Westley has vowed that – whatever comes to pass – he will be truer to his own game this season than he was when he last got his opportunity with England.”I just really regret not scoring more runs,” he said. “There are a few technical things that I thought they would make me a better player. I changed my stance a little bit; I thought would help my balance. I changed my back-lift. Not huge changes, but things that I felt were important in order for me to be more successful at international level.”Actually, in hindsight, I should have worked on what I was good at, and increased the intensity and the preparation around that, to elevate the player that I was by 10 percent, rather than try and be someone that you’re not.”You end up taking two or three steps back and only one step forward, rather than actually going through the difficulty of working on what you’ve already got and improving that to take the step forward.”One obvious strength of Westley’s going into his Test debut was the quality of his leg-side play, but in attempting to make himself a more rounded off-side player, he recognises that he perhaps blunted some of his effectiveness.”It was actually explained to me quite nicely by Paul Farbrace,” he said, “whether you are playing at club level or first-class cricket, you are the same player, but you try and improve by 5 or 10 percent because the standard increases, and it was quite refreshing to view it like that.”At the end of the day, you don’t really need to have every shot in the book. I mean, look at players like Jonathan Trott, a verystrong leg-side player, KP, Mark Waugh. Pietersen was not a big cutter of the ball, nor is Trott, but they have strengths in other areas and their strengths were good enough at international level to be successful. I think it’s more having that sort of mind-set and honing those skills in order to succeed.”Tom Westley helped England towards their target•Getty Images
Talking of mind-set, Essex are set to benefit from the long-term return of one of the toughest players of his generation, with the newly-knighted Sir Alastair Cook set to play the entire first-class season for the club following his retirement from international cricket.”He’s hardly spoken about it!,” Westley joked about Cook’s encounter with the Queen last month. “It’s an honour for him to be knighted, but it’s an honour for us to have him back here full time now, because his impact on the squad goes a long way. He’s an England and Essex legend, so adding someone like that to the squad; it’s always going to help.”Having won the league in 2017, he was a huge part of that; his runs in the early part of the season really set us up. So hopefully he can continue where he left off for England and score bucket-loads of runs for the county.”Would Westley himself be picking Cook’s brains in his bid to regain England recognition?”I’ve been asked that a lot in recent seasons,” Westley said. “He can’t score runs for you and he even said that to me. We sat down before I made my debut and I asked him if he had any bits of advice. He said ‘not really, you’ve got to where you’ve got to because you are good enough, you’ve scored the runs to be here but only you can go out and score runs now for yourself’.””It’s so true because if you strive for bits of secret information – what’s the elixir? The answer? – you’ll never find it. The only way you’re going to achieve that is scoring runs consistently. He’s banged on about that for a long time can’t see anything changing. I’d be disappointed if he now says learn a new shot.”Westley will get his first crack at scoring those vital first-class runs in Abu Dhabi at the end of the month, when he plays for MCC against the Champion County, Surrey, in the season’s curtain-raiser, alongside his fellow Essex players Dan Lawrence and Sam Cook. The conditions may be somewhat different to what will be awaiting back home at Chelmsford, but the opponents are very familiar – given that Westley made a century against Surrey at The Oval in the final match of last season, to set up what turned out to be an incredible one-wicket victory, as Surrey battled back from being bowled out for 67 in the first innings to take the game right to the wire.”They were the team to beat last year and we managed to beat them, so hopefully we can start the season strongly,” said Westley. “I think they’ll admit we controlled the game for most of it, but we made it very, very difficult for ourselves to win. But it was a fantastic game of cricket for the neutral and the spectator, and it was nice to beat them. It’ll go a long way towards us trying to beat them again in 2019.””Places are not nailed down in [England’s] top three, which gives a lot of hope for us county cricketers who want to play for England.”The selectors have been very good; say with [Rory] Burns for instance, he definitely deserved his chance last year because of the weight of runs he scored in the county game.”And picking Joe Denly in the winter gives every 30-plus cricketer hope that, if you do work out your game a bit later or do fantastically well, then you do have the opportunity to potentially play for your country.”That’s very important because it gives everybody hope and a nice pathway. You don’t just feel that no matter what you do your time’s gone.”
Glasgow Rangers are not in action until 20 January amid the winter break for all Premiership teams and Philippe Clement could use the next couple of weeks to work out what targets he wishes to sign during the January transfer window.
Despite a recent Old Firm defeat to Celtic, it has been a positive few weeks for the Ibrox side which has seen them claim their first trophy since May 2022 by winning the League Cup at Hampden, while also securing progress to the Europa League knockout rounds.
Clement will be expecting more after tasting glory so early in his reign and this will spur him on to bring in a few new arrivals this month.
Latest Rangers transfer news: Gers want PL teen; Saudi link to midfield ace
Who is Philippe Clement eyeing up in the transfer window ahead of his first full season at Ibrox?
ByRoss Kilvington Jul 9, 2024
There have been a few names linked with moves to Scotland over the previous few days, but a new name has emerged and this could be a gamechanger of a signing…
Rangers transfer news – Emmanuel Dennis
Emmanuel Dennis’ name had been mentioned in passing through a few fan media channels, in particular This is Ibrox, but it was Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri who confirmed that the Gers have been offered the player.
He said: “Emmanuel Dennis has been proposed to the club but there hasn’t been an official approach as of now. I can confirm the player’s interest for Rangers though.”
While it looks as though no formal approach has been made by the Light Blues, it is clear that Dennis wants a move to Glasgow and, considering he once played under Clement at Club Brugge, this could make a potential move happen.
The striker is currently playing for Turkish side Istanbul Basaksehir FK on loan from Nottingham Forest, yet is not enjoying the most productive of seasons, failing to find the back of the net in eight matches so far.
Dennis has been forced to play on either wing this term but his preferred position is through the middle and this is an area the Belgian manager urgently needs replacements this month.
Kemar Roofe’s injury record is dismal, while Danilo is out of action until April and Cyriel Dessers has failed to sparkle since a big-money move in the summer.
This has left the 59-year-old light up top and a move for the Forest striker could be a stroke of genius, especially as he would be a big upgrade on Dessers.
Cyriel Dessers has failed to live up to expectations at Rangers
With Michael Beale looking to replace Alfredo Morelos last summer following his exit, Dessers was earmarked as a key target after scoring ten goals during the 2022/23 campaign for Cremonese.
It was clear after his first few matches that he was never the type of player that was going to replace Morelos, failing to bully opposition defenders, while he lacked a clinical edge in front of goal.
Indeed, across 30 games for the Ibrox side this term, Dessers has scored just nine goals, and he lacks a clear goalscoring instinct which is required to play as a centre-forward at the Gers.
The 29-year-old has missed 11 big chances in the Premiership this season, the most out of any player in the squad, while he also ranks fifth for scoring frequency (a goal every 187 minutes) and 14th for successful dribbles per game (0.4) and these statistics clearly indicate how much improving he needs to do in the second half of the season.
Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers.
Dennis may not be having the best of seasons himself, but if Clement can get him back to how he was at Club Brugge and Watford, then he could turn into a shrewd signing indeed.
Emmanuel Dennis has played under Clement before
During his spell in Belgium for Brugge between 2019 and 2021, Dennis featured in 46 matches when Clement was the coach, and he found the back of the net ten times, along with registering five assists.
On the surface, this may not seem like the best strike rate in the world, yet Dennis scored twice against Real Madrid, while also netting against Manchester United and Zenit Saint Petersburg in European matches, proving his big-game mentality.
A move to Watford saw the £42k-per-week hitman score ten Premier League goals in 33 matches, chipping in with six assists, and it was clear he had found his level.
A big money transfer followed to newly promoted Forest in the summer of 2022, where he scored just twice in 19 league matches, and he hasn’t quite looked the same player since departing Vicarage Road two years ago.
During that goal-laden 2021/22 campaign, Dennis registered more goal contributions than Dessers (16 vs 12), scored more goals (ten vs nine), had more shot-creating actions per 90 (2.96 vs 2.62) and succeeded with more successful take-ons (68 vs 19), clearly showing that he was the more impressive striker.
While that season is firmly in the past, Dennis could thrive in Scottish football and a return to playing under Clement could be a catalyst for him to return to his goalscoring best.
Journalist Josh Bunting heaped praise on the Nigerian frontman during his wonderful spell at Watford, saying: “Emmanuel Dennis has been one of the most underrated players outside of Watford fans this season, he’s been a very good addition. 4 goals and 5 assists in 11 Premier League games should be being spoken about much more. Today he was absolutely electric from the start to finish.”
His spell in Turkey has been a nightmare and with the player seemingly interested in a move to Rangers, the former AS Monaco manager would be foolish not to consider it, especially as it will likely be a loan deal.
If the Light Blues are going to push Celtic all the way in the chase for the title while also aiming to go far in Europe, they need more firepower and Dennis could be reinvigorated with a move to the Premiership side.
Dessers hasn’t settled and while he will be given more time, plenty of the supporters have already given up on him turning his form around and this further accelerates the need for a new forward.
The next few weeks could see the club bring in some quality players and Dennis should be someone who arrives at Ibrox.

The January transfer window officially opened for business at the start of last week and Celtic are yet to make an addition to their squad, at the time of writing.
Brendan Rodgers has already seen Nat Phillips return to Liverpool following the conclusion of his loan spell at Parkhead and it remains to be seen whether or not the club will look to find a replacement for the English battler.
The Hoops have been linked with plenty of players in the build-up to this month, and since the market opened, and it will be interesting to see how busy the Glasgow giants are between now and February.
Rodgers will be looking to secure the Scottish Premiership title over the next few months and here is a look at a dream Celtic XI after the January window to accomplish that, with up to three new signings…
1 Caoimhin Kelleher
Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
The Sun reported in September 2023, after the summer transfer window had slammed shut, that Rodgers remains keen on a deal to sign Caoimhin Kelleher from Liverpool to be his long-term number one.
He has not had many opportunities to impress at Anfield in recent seasons but his performances in the EFL Cup suggest that the potential is there for the 6 foot 2 titan to be an impressive performer for the Hoops.
Kelleher saved 73% of the shots on his goal in two outings in the competition last season and enjoyed a stunning save success rate of 84% across four League Cup appearances during the 2021/22 campaign.
The 25-year-old ace could be the dream signing this month to be the heir to Joe Hart, 36, who has a save success rate of 67% in the Premiership this season. Celtic's current number one could be ditched for a younger stopper who could be the first-choice for many more years to come.
2 Alistair Johnston
Celtic defender Alistair Johnston.
At right-back, there is no immediate need for a replacement or upgrade for Canada international Alistair Johnston. He has started 18 league matches and created five 'big chances' for his teammates so far this term.
3 Cameron Carter-Vickers
Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.
Hopefully, the USA international – Cameron Carter-Vickers – will be able to put his injury woes behind him to enjoy a strong second half of the season. The former Spurs defender has been restricted to 13 appearances in the Premiership.
4 Liam Scales
Liam Scales in action for Celtic.
On the left of the centre-back pairing, Liam Scales should remain a first-choice for Rodgers after his impressive displays since his return from a loan at Aberdeen.
The Ireland international has made 2.6 tackles and interceptions per game and won 63% of his duels in the Premiership this season, which shows that opposition players have found it difficult to get the better of him in physical contests.
5 Owen Beck
Liverpool defender Owen Beck.
DaveOCKOP reported earlier this month that Celtic, alongside Rangers, are interested in a deal to sign Liverpool left-back Owen Beck on loan until the end of the season.
He spent the first half of the campaign on loan with Dundee in the Premiership and could come in as an upgrade on Greg Taylor in the back four.

As you can see in the table above, Beck, who was once hailed as "spectacular" by talent scout Jacek Kulig, could be a dream signing due to his proven ability at both ends of the pitch.
6 Callum McGregor
Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.
In the middle of the park, there is no obvious reason as to why Callum McGregor will not remain an important figure in the middle of the park as Rodgers' captain. He has started all 22 of the club's league matches so far this season.
7 Reo Hatate
Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.
Alongside the skipper, Reo Hatate will be hoping for more luck with injuries, similarly to Carter-Vickers, during the second half of the season.
The Japan international has only started four top-flight matches so far this term after a return of eight goals and eight assists in 29 league starts last season.
8 Matt O'Riley
Celtic'sMattO'Riley
To complete the midfield trio, Celtic should be hoping to keep hold of Matt O'Riley. The Denmark international has racked up ten goals and seven assists in 21 Premiership matches so far this season.
9 Nicolas Kuhn
Celtic forward Daizen Maeda.
The third dream signing of the window could come in the form of German forward Nicolas Kuhn to replace Daizen Maeda. He is said to be close to a move to Parkhead in a deal that is reported to be worth just under £3m.

As you can see in the table above, the 24-year-old whiz boasts better statistics in a number of key attacking metrics, whilst they both offer a similar goal threat.
The left-footed wizard could provide far more quality in transition, with his dribbling ability, and offer considerably more to his teammates as a creator on the right wing.
Kuhn could, therefore, come in as an upgrade on the Japan international if the Bhoys can secure a deal for his services before the end of the window.
10 Kyogo Furuhashi
Kyogo Furuhashi
The 28-year-old centre-forward has not been at his best this season, with eight goals in 22 league outings, but Rodgers should be trying his best to get the attacker back on song.
Kyogo Furuhashi plundered a stunning 27 goals in 31 league starts last term, which shows that the quality is there for him to be an elite scorer, and it is down to him and the coaching staff to recapture that form.
