Farke has an incredible young talent at Leeds who scored 51 times in 22/23

Leeds United's relegation from the Premier League last season will live long in the memory of many supporters but new head coach Daniel Farke has done a tremendous job at bringing Elland Road back to life again for the first time since Marcelo Bielsa knelt at pitchside.

Bringing in the likes of Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu and Glen Kamara has worked wonders for the Peacocks this season and Farke has even managed to turn 17-year-old Archie Gray into a star in Yorkshire, having brought the Scottish teenager up from the rich tapestry of the club's academy.

Leeds midfielder Archie Gray.

However, there is another young Scot plying his trade in Leeds' youth setup who may be destined for a call-up to the first team sooner rather than later, and he could be coming for Georginio Rutter's place too.

Georginio Rutter's stats this season

Leeds United have been scoring goals for fun this season under Farke and are currently the fifth-highest goalscorers in the Championship behind Ipswich Town, Leicester City, Norwich City and Plymouth Argyle.

Nevertheless, the goals have been quite evenly spread, with Summerville topping the charts for the Whites with six goals, which is one more than second-place Piroe. In fact, Leeds have had twelve different players find the net in 15 league matches.

While a blend of different goalscorers is never too much of an issue as long as the team are winning games, there has been a noticeable lack of potency from the number '9' position and Rutter in particular.

The Frenchman moved to Elland Road for a club record fee of £36.5m back in January but failed to have any impact at all in his debut campaign, scoring zero goals and registering the same number of assists.

Thankfully for Leeds, Rutter has shown a little more promise this term and has managed to bag three goals and five assists in 14 Championship appearances but a goal every 4.67 games is still far from an ideal ratio for a centre-forward in what is shaping up to be a strong race for promotion. The 21-year-old has scored the same number of league goals as centre-back Pascal Struijk this term.

Leeds forward Georginio Rutter.

From an xG total of five in the 2023/24 campaign, Rutter has converted three opportunities according to FBref. His xG per 90 stands at 0.38 but the Frenchman is only scoring 0.23 goals per 90, meaning he is currently underperforming in front of goal. Additionally, the former Hoffenheim attacker is scoring 0.09 goals per shot this term and is averaging merely 1.09 shots on target per 90.

It is clear that Farke has been tolerant of Rutter's goalscoring woes because of his output when creating chances but there is a player on Leeds United's books this season that could be coming for that number '9' spot.

Lewis Pirie's stats this season

It was confirmed during the summer that Leeds had managed to secure the services of Aberdeen's sensational frontman Lewis Pirie.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the two clubs had agreed a £200k fee for the player on a three-year deal, while the Italian journalist went on to describe the 16-year-old as a "rising star" who had bagged a quite remarkable 51 goals for club and country throughout the 2022/23 season.

At the time, TEAMtalk editor James Marshment tweeted how impressive Leeds' coup of the prolific teenager was, calling Pirie "one of the most in-demand young strikers around".

There had also been interest from Premier League sides Everton, Brighton and Hove Albion and Fulham, as reported by the BBC, although the 5 foot 10 forward chose Leeds in the end despite Aberdeen chairman Alan Burrows claiming that the Dons did "everything they possibly could" to keep him around.

The youngster has already had an excellent start to life in Yorkshire, scoring three goals and recording one assist in five appearances for the U18s in the Premier League, averaging a goal every 108 minutes of action. Furthermore, Pirie has been bumped up to Scotland's U17s and made two appearances for his country back in August, according to Transfermarkt.

While it's still too early to tell the exact trajectory a player's career will take, Pirie is already easily one of the best strikers in his age bracket and could have a massive future ahead of him.

Kevin Roberts unveiled as CA chief executive

Internal experience was cited by CA’s chairman David Peever as the reason to choose Roberts as James Sutherland’s successor

To the ring of applause from his Cricket Australia underlings, the new chief executive Kevin Roberts insisted he was the right man to drive culture and reputation change for the governing body. He did so despite his intimate role in its long road towards the dual infamies of the 2017 players pay dispute and the 2018 Newlands ball-tampering scandal.Flanked by the CA chairman David Peever, who joined the board on the same day in 2012 and has been Roberts’ close ally and leadership sponsor throughout, the 46-year-old former first-class batsman, then-apparel executive for Canterbury, Adidas, Colorado and 2XU, declared his intent to repair relationships and rebuild trust with the Australian community. He will need to do so while remaining closely linked to the episodes that caused those bonds and trust to be eroded in the first place.Notwithstanding the succession jockeying that ensued after James Sutherland announced his intention to resign in June, throwing up candidates such as John Harnden, John Warn and Christina Matthews, Roberts’ succession had seemed ordained almost from the moment he left the CA Board to become a part of Sutherland’s executive team in late 2015. Peever duly cited internal experience as the major reason to choose Roberts, who led CA’s side of last year’s fractious pay dispute with the Australian Cricketers Association.”I did absolutely play a key role in those negotiations and our strategy was endorsed by CA and the state and territory associations, we were all in it together,” Roberts said. “But we do have a lot to reflect on and learn from, as we have. There’s no doubt it was a challenging situation, but we move forward, we learn and we make commitments as to how we grow the game and how we grow those partnerships into the future.”We obviously can’t change history, what we can do is work very closely with the ACA on a sustained basis over many years. To make sure the relationship with the ACA and the players is not defined by negotiations that happen over a few months every five years or so, but the relationship is defined by how we work together, to develop national teams, to support our players and to help them develop as athletes, as competitors and as people. The key learning is the importance of the relationship being defined by how we work together over a sustained period, rather than having this pressure cooker type build up to a five-yearly negotiation.”So we’ve got over three and a half year until the next MoU needs to be negotiated and our commitment is to build a stronger relationship in that period. That’s the greatest learning to come out of it, to have that foundation. There will be bumps in the road for cricket along the way, no question, we’re all human and we’ll experience some challenges along the way, but when we work on really sincerely and genuinely building that relationship with the ACA, and continuing to strengthen our relationship with players, cricket will be in a far better space when it comes time to contemplate the next MoU down the track.”Roberts’ appointment was met with a cautious response from the ACA president Greg Dyer. “This is a critical time for Australian cricket,” he said. “The cricket public need to reconnect with the game and this will begin with CA being open, fair and transparent in order to regain their trust. The on and off-field events of the past 18 months have created an expectation that a number of things will need to change.”The findings and recommendations of CA’s Longstaff and McCosker reviews will hopefully identify the changes that need to occur. Just as the players have been held accountable, we also expect that CA will be fully accountable in taking the difficult steps required to restore the reputation of the game.”The wider cultural review of CA, prepared by the corporate ethics expert Simon Longstaff, was handed to the board in recent weeks, meaning its contents were able to be viewed before a final decision was reached. Peever declined to comment on its content, but said that implementing review’s recommendations would be a critical early task for Roberts, whether it was strengthening the link between CA and the national teams or building a more open and constructive relationship with the ACA.”We recognise it is likely as we work through what needs to happen with the information that comes out of the review, that someone with strong experience both in leadership and in leading cultural change will be a very important leader in the organisation,” Peever said. “So Kevin’s credentials in that respect helped the Board have very strong conviction about his appointment.”There’s no doubt when you look at the [MoU] process, we can all learn from that. But that said, the outcome for cricket has been a good outcome, and just let me reiterate we have professionalised the women, our men are the best-paid sportsmen in the country, and with the agreement of the ACA we have been able to now stream off some of the above expected revenues into grassroots. Those conversations are going on now. I refer to the foundation that has been set, and that’s a very important part of that foundation.”In his corporate career, Roberts had some intriguing moments. He was still with Adidas when the company cut ties with CA as sponsor and supplier in 2011, leading to a deal with Asics. More recently, Roberts departed his role at 2XU to join CA in a fractious year for the sportswear brand, involving the collapse of its biggest US customer The Sports Authority. One of 2XU’s biggest shareholders is Tanarra Capital, whose principal happens to be the Sport Australia chairman, John Wylie.Among other issues for Roberts to tackle is the improvement of relationships between CA and its sponsors and broadcast partners. In the latter category, at least, there are fresh starts to be had with Seven and Fox Sports, both of which have bet big on cricket’s reputation not being so damaged as to affect their chances of leveraging off a $1.18 billion broadcasting deal to draw eyeballs to their free-to-air, pay television and digital platforms.”I think the challenge is to unite the cricket community and build trust and respect from the level that it’s at now, and we’ve got a great opportunity to do that,” Roberts said. “We’ve got such a rich tapestry as a cricket community across the nation, and part of that rich tapestry is the diversity of views, the diversity of needs, the diversity of communities. It’s a great opportunity to unite Australian cricket across all of that diversity, but that is a challenge and a compelling challenge.”A saying that’s very relevant to sport is things are rarely as good or as bad as they seem. That’s very true coming out of the Cape Town incident, which was let’s be honest a low point for our sport. But things are most certainly not as bad as they seem to some right now, and we push forward with optimism. Cricket is a game that embraces optimism, it’s all about optimism and I’m sure the cricket community feels the same way. So I’d characterise cricket’s relationship with its communities around the country as good, and we aspire to be great.”We won’t be perfect, but I absolutely promise that we’ll be genuine in our intentions to build respect, build trust, and we’ll try to bring fans and players closer together. Our players in the national men’s and women’s teams are outstanding young Australians, and we want to help other Australians understand more about those male and female players, just what great people they are, and at the same time help our players empathise with fans and what they’re experiencing in the game. It’s really all about bringing those two groups together.”Standing at the back of the room was Sutherland, who will formally exit his role at the CA AGM on October 25, more than 17 years after he was appointed in June 2001. “I am confident Kevin is ready to lead Australian cricket through the sport’s next stage of growth,” he said. “He has been a key member of our executive team over recent years and provided terrific support to me in my role. I congratulate him on his appointment and wish him the very best.”

Player "free to leave" after Tottenham board green-light exit

Tottenham Hotspur chiefs have apparently given the green-light for a player to leave the club for good, with a decision already being made.

Spurs exit candidates for 2024

Ange Postecoglou's arrival at Spurs has managed to reshape the careers of a good few squad members, perhaps most notably Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr, who were both largely ignored by former manager Antonio Conte last season.

However, some Tottenham stars have seen their careers take a nosedive after the Australian's appointment from Celtic in June. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who started 35 Premier League games under Conte last term, has largely been relegated to the bench – only becoming a regular in the eleven recently due to Spurs' current suspension and injury crisis.

alfie-dorrington-eric-dier-tottenham-opinion

The same can be said of long-serving defender Eric Dier, with the Englishman only playing his first league minutes of 23/24 in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea around a fortnight ago. His contract expires at the end of the season, and like Hojbjerg, rumour has it Dier could leave Spurs as soon as January.

There is also the matter of Tottenham's surplus players currently out on loan at other clubs. Joe Rodon may be sold by Spurs next year, coming after his excellent start to life at Leeds, and the Lilywhites could be set to demand around £20 million for his signature.

It is unclear what the future holds for defensive trio Sergio Reguilon, Japhet Tanganga and Djed Spence, who are all also away on temporary stints, but an update has come to light on high-earning flop Tanguy Ndombele.

Spurs green-light Ndombele exit

The Frenchman, who is finding life difficult at loanee club Galatasaray, has played just 123 minutes in seven appearances across both the Super Lig and Champions League this season. (Tanguy Ndombele stats – Transfermarkt)

Signed by Tottenham for around £53.8 million, a club record fee at the time, things haven't gone quite to plan since with journalist Paul Brown claiming Spurs will now look to part company with Ndombele for good in 2024. He told GiveMeSport:

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

"Never say never and Ange Postecoglou is not the kind of manager who likes to freeze people out, but Tanguy Ndombele has had so many chances under so many managers and never been able to produce what he's capable of, that I think Spurs are only too willing to wash their hands of him, really. I think a decision has been made at the board level that he's free to leave and they will take as much as they can get for him, frankly. So I think it's unlikely on that basis that he ever plays for Tottenham again."

The Frenchman was a star at Lyon before putting pen to paper on a move to N17 in 2019, with Man City boss Pep Guardiola even calling him "amazingly calm" in possession (Liverpool Echo).

“Lyon are one of the best teams we’ve played against," said Guardiola in 2018 after a Champions League encounter with the Ligue 1 side.

"Aouar is unbelievable and Ndombele is amazingly calm.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal star Declan Rice branded Ndombele a "top player" just last year, but a series of failed loan spells and chances under many different Spurs bosses haven't managed to reignite his stuttering career.

Total Sports Marketing (TSM), a Bangladesh-based sports-management company, has bagged Cricket Ireland’s first multi-year media-rights deal. They will broadcast international matches of the Ireland men’s cricket team for the duration of the ICC’s Future Tours Programme between 2019 and 2022.Cricket Ireland CEO Warren Deutrom said that they are focusing on domestic audiences in Ireland and the UK, and that the deal will give his board financial stability.”This is the first time that Cricket Ireland is engaging directly with the broadcast rights market and is another welcome development arising from our elevation to Full Member status of the ICC, and entry into the Future Tours Programme,” Deutrom said. “One of our priority objectives now is to work with TSM and our broadcast advisers Pitch International to ensure that, alongside our worldwide footprint, we also have visibility in our key domestic markets of Ireland and the UK, not just on TV, but also radio and online.”The deal provides an element of financial stability for Cricket Ireland by allowing us to enter into multi-year budgeting processes. This, in turn, means we can – with more certainty – invest back into talent development and support the game at domestic and grass-roots levels.”In May this year, TSM also bought the broadcast rights of Afghanistan Cricket Board for the 2018-23 period.

Spurs could stop City by unleashing "superb" fringe player with Hojbjerg

Tottenham Hotspur return to Premier League action this afternoon and will be desperate to avoid a four-match skid, though Manchester City stand in the way of a return to form.

Pep Guardiola's outfit welcome Spurs to the Etihad Stadium as they look to return to winning ways themselves after drawing successive matches to Chelsea and Liverpool, but injury-hit Tottenham will have their work cut out if they are to return to London with a positive result.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou

While Postecoglou started emphatically after arriving in the summer, injuries and suspensions have ravaged the early-stage purple patch, with the threadbare squad impacted further by Rodrigo Bentancur's ankle injury against Aston Villa on Sunday after a reckless lunging challenge from Matty Cash.

With the Uruguayan now facing a spell on the sidelines having only just returned from a lengthy ACL layoff, it's likely that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will return to the starting XI.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's season in numbers

Hojbjerg has only started twice in the Premier League this season but has played at least 45 minutes across Tottenham's past three outings, replacing Bentancur in the first half during the home loss against Villa.

Perhaps a little conservative on the ball, the experienced Dane is still a "monster" in the middle – as has been said by compatriot Morten Bisgaard – and given the task of stifling Manchester City's threat, his presence could be vital.

As per FBref, the £100k-per-week machine ranks among the top 15% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for pass completion, the top 11% for passes attempted and the top 19% for progressive passes per 90, evidencing the composure in possession and tenacity in his defensive duties that could prove pivotal against the Citizens.

At his core, Hojbjerg is an industrious player with intelligence and positional security; he will keep things tidy, providing exciting Spurs' attacking options with the stability to tear open pockets of space – City are frightening, but they are not unstoppable and chinks in their armour have been found over the past few months.

Eric Dier must start vs Manchester City

While Hojbjerg could instil resilience and balance in the centre of the park, it's equally important that Postecoglou consider dropping Emerson Royal from the central defence and replacing him with Eric Dier, whose Spurs career is dwindling to a close.

Dier, aged 29, has been something of a stalwart for Spurs and has amassed 362 appearances in total, but he has only made two appearances this season – called upon to start against Wolverhampton Wanderers with both Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero unavailable.

Out of contract at the end of the campaign, Dier's chances of extending look more tenuous by the week, but with Romero still suspended this weekend Postecoglou must consider dropping Emerson.

Quite simply, if Spurs field a back-four without a single senior centre-back, as was the choice last weekend, City could capitalise on a lack of height and positional awareness; Ben Davies has performed well across recent matches, to his credit, but Emerson won just one duel, made no tackles and was dribbled past against Unai Emery's team, as per Sofascore.

Tottenham may need to be ambitious in the January transfer market to get back in the ascendancy.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Dier ranks among the top 11% of centre-backs for aerial wins and the top 15% for blocks per 90, which could be vital in combining with Davies' skill set at the back.

It's really not ideal, with the whole quandary only punctuating the need for reinforcements in January, but Dier is experienced and was noted for his "superb" defensive efforts at Molineux by football.london's Alasdair Gold earlier this month. He has to start.
