Wolves: Steve Bull Not Happy With "Unbelievable" Talent

Wolverhampton Wanderers icon Steve Bull has been left furious by Matheus Nunes following his £53m transfer to Manchester City.

After refusing to train so the deal could happen the Portuguese midfielder got his move to the Premier League champions on deadline day.

Nunes had only signed for Wolves last summer on a five-year contract, with the West Midlands side paying a club-record transfer fee of £38m to Sporting Lisbon.

During his time playing at Molineux, he only scored one goal (which won April Goal of the Month) and recorded one assist.

How did Nunes get his move?

The 25-year-old whiz was targeted by some of the Premier League's biggest clubs such as Liverpool, but Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola demanded that his side sign the Brazilian-born player.

This came after Manchester City captain Kevin De Bruyne was ruled out for four months after suffering a hamstring injury. This left City desperately needing midfield reinforcements, and after their £87m bid for West Ham’s Lucas Paqueta was rejected, City set their sights on Nunes.

At first, the Citizen’s bid of £47m was rejected by Wolves, and as the closing of the window drew closer Nunes informed his club of his wishes to leave and consequently refused to train for them. Prompting Wolves to respond to this by fining him.

Eventually on August 31st (transfer deadline day) the two clubs agreed on a fee of £53m with a 10% sell-on fee for Wolves allowing Nunes to sign a 5-year contract with the Champions of Europe.

What has Bull said about Nunes?

Following Nunes’ exit from Wolves club legend Bull has blasted the midfielder for his conduct.

Writing in the Express and Star the former striker said:

“There’s no loyalty in football anymore – it’s shocking in my eyes.

“I was disappointed and frustrated at how Matheus Nunes acted in his final days at Wolves.

“If you have a long contract you should try to serve as much of that as you can. I know a club like Manchester City can turn your head, but he shouldn’t have gone on strike.

“He should have got his head down and focused on his football, and let everyone else sort out the deal.

“But he’s gone now and I wish him well. With him going, Wolves have been able to add in some key positions.

“It is now up to Gary O’Neil to put it all together with the squad he has.”

Should Nunes have acted differently?

Despite Nunes eventually getting his move, Bell could be right with what he said regarding the midfielder’s behaviour being “shocking” and perhaps no footballer should use this tactic to get their way.

Earning around £85k-per-week at Molineux, the Portuguese dynamo was a key figure in midfield, ranking fifth in the squad for average WhoScored rating from his two appearances this term.

With 11 dribbles and three key passes across those outings, there is no doubt that he would have become a great threat for O'Neil in the final third, so it is indeed disappointing to see him depart in this manner.

Having also been lauded as being an "unbelievable" talent by ex-teammate Goncalo Santos, it will surely hurt Bull and the Old Gold faithful alike if Nunes starts to hit the ground running at the defending champions.

But for O'Neil and the coaching staff, they must now move on with the squad at his disposal, as Wolves will welcome a resurgent Liverpool to the Midlands after the international break.

'Not the kind who likes second place' – Brook

England captain Harry brook rued the team’s lack of application and rash shots against Australia in the quarter-final

It was a forgettable shot, one that his captain Harry Brook described “out in a silly kind of way.” Little would have Tom Banton realised when he looked to reverse sweep legspinner Lloyd Pope that Australia would be able to crack open the game. Up until then, England were fairly comfortable at 71 for 3 chasing 128 with the lunch break imminent. That could have disturbed Australia’s momentum, but Banton’s wicket after he raced to a sparkling half-century exposed a lower order that panicked at the first hint of pressure. You didn’t need to look at Brook’s face to say how distraught he was. Repeated references to “the day goes on” were enough indication of his hurt. “Getting through to the quarter-finals is a great achievement, but I am not the kind who likes second place,” he said. “I am pretty disappointed. I don’t think it hurts more because we lost to Australia. Losing to any team is the same.”Brook found it hard to digest that his team, that he felt had played spin “exceptionally well” throughout the tournament, would throw their wickets away to lack of application and rash shots in a game that was superbly set up by their bowlers.”I think we played spin exceptionally well throughout the tournament,” Brook said. “Pope just bowled very well and got some turn off the pitch, but we also played a few bad shots, but the day goes on. The pitch wasn’t that bad really, both sides didn’t bat well. You can’t really fault the pitch. After a defeat like that, we’ll have stuff to say about everything and hopefully the lads will buy into it. I am sure Lewi (Jon Lewis, the head coach) will have a lot of things to say to us.”At lunch, England needed 49 and had five wickets remaining. Brook talked up England’s batting depth in the build-up to the game. This was an opportunity to prove it under pressure. “We didn’t really need to say much at the break,” Brook said. “We had to go at 1.5 an over or something, so all we needed to do was knock it around for a few overs and if we still had wickets in hand, knock them over with ease. We lost some wickets quickly after the break – that didn’t help. There was a lot of pressure. The run out was quite panicky. That’s what happens in big collapses.”Lewis was understanding of his team and the effort they had put in to prepare for the tournament, and hoped the bitter pill would only help them channel the hurt better and become world beaters in the future. “I already spoke to the guys about their journey towards becoming great sportsmen,” he said. “You win some, you lose some, but you learn from dealing with pressure situations and how you react when put under pressure in front of everyone. The captain has been outstanding, he didn’t get runs today but he’s played superbly.”All these players are nowhere near being finished players. They are all still developing and for them to experience the joy of playing in a World Cup for the country will be an experience to cherish. The way this group gets on is brilliant, both on and off the field. I know they will stick together. Yes, we have taken a big knock. This will be tough for them. It won’t feel nice now, it won’t feel nice when they reflect on this three or four weeks later, but this will spur them on to even greater heights in the future.”

Liverpool: "Brilliant" key figure under FSG now linked with shock exit

Liverpool have numerous heroic figures at the club currently, but not all of them are players, and a worrying new update has linked perhaps their greatest asset with a shock exit.

Who are Liverpool's best players?

The Reds have enjoyed a memorable period over the past seven or eight years, coinciding with Jurgen Klopp taking charge as manager back in October 2015. The Germany has become a true icon at Anfield, leading his side to Champions League and Premier League glory, and there have been many superstar players along the way, too.

Mohamed Salah stands out in that respect, becoming one of the most famous footballers on the planet since joining from Roma in 2017, but the likes of Alisson, Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are all more than worthy of a mention, too, along with local hero Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The hope is that there is still plenty of joy and success to come under Klopp, with his current contract not expiring until the summer of 2026, but a new update suggests that may not be the case.

cheick-doucoure-jurgen-klopp-liverpool-transfer-premier-league

Will Jurgen Klopp leave Liverpool?

According to 90min, Klopp is on the shortlist of managers who Germany are considering to take charge of the national team, following Hansi Flick's sacking over the weekend:

"The DFB consider Jurgen Klopp to be one of the main candidates to take over the vacant German national team head coach job, 90min understands.

"Hansi Flick became the first Germany manager ever to be sacked following a disastrous 4-1 defeat to Japan on Saturday evening. Flick had overseen a bitterly disappointing World Cup campaign, in which Germany failed to make it out of the group stages, and a run of five games without a win since March.

"Heading into a home Euro 2024 next summer, Germany are now keen to replace Flick with a top tier manager, and sources have confirmed to 90min that Klopp is considered to be one of their top choices for the vacant position. The DFB are so enamoured with Klopp that we understand they would even consider allowing Klopp to see out the 2023/24 season with Liverpool before taking the job on a full-time basis just before Euro 2024."

Losing Klopp at this point doesn't even bear thinking about for Liverpool, with the 56-year-old's arrival arguably the most important thing to happen at Anfield in decades, alongside possibly Steven Gerrard, who has called the Reds boss "brililant" himself.

The German holds the key to the Reds' success in the coming years, and has been the inspiration for all the many trophies won during his tenure, and it would be a shock if he left now, considering he is a man of his word – one who has said he will see out his contract.

It is certainly easy to see Klopp as Germany's manager at some point in the future, and it is no surprise that he is so high up on their list of priorities, but for now, Liverpool fans should treasure him for every possible second of him, as he looks to overcome a below-par 2022/23 campaign for everyone at the club, enjoying more glories in the next three years or so.

Broad tweaks bowling action ahead of New Zealand tour

Stuart Broad averaged over 36 with the ball in 2017, his worst year since 2010, but currently sits on 399 Test wickets

Stuart Broad has been honing his bowling action ahead of England’s Test series in New Zealand next month where he will arrive sitting on 399 wickets. In a pair of tweets posted on Tuesday, Broad explained how he was working on getting more side-on on his delivery stride. In recent times he has found it harder to move the ball away from right handers.”Working on my action to get more side on. More twist in my shoulders to get my front arm more towards the target, helping my feet align much better,” Broad wrote alongside a short video. “Walk throughs give me a great feel of how my body is moving. Some balls come out great, some horrible, but I always say try different things in training cause if something clicks for you it can help your game, no one cares if you get it wrong in the aim for improvement!”The Ashes was largely a struggle for Broad as he claimed 11 wickets at 47.72 – five of them coming in the fourth Test at Melbourne – his most expensive return in a series of more than three matches, while he finished with his worst Test figures of 0 for 142 in Perth.Broad came in for heavy criticism after the performance in Perth, with former England captain Michael Vaughan questioning his place in the team, but responded with his best outing of the series in Melbourne.Throughout 2017, Broad found Test wickets harder to come by than previous years, finishing with 30 scalps at 36.06 – his highest average since 2010.Broad claimed his 399th Test wicket early in Australia’s first innings at the SCG last month – when he bowled Cameron Bancroft with his second delivery – but remained short of his next landmark through 29 overs as Australia amassed 649 for 7. He will become the second England bowler after new-ball partner James Anderson to reach 400 wickets. The first Test against New Zealand, a day-night match at Eden Park, starts on March 22.

– Um time forte, bola aérea qualificada.

Spurs: Lilywhites are still being rinsed by ‘one of the worst signings’

Tottenham Hotspur, in their desperation for silverware, have made some very questionable choices in recent years. The sacking of Mauricio Pochettino marked a turning point for Daniel Levy and the rest of the hierarchy, who outlined a sharp change from steady progression to win-now managers, with limited success.

This was a gaffe that the chairman recently took ownership of though, highlighting huge progression for a man so often lambasted for a lack of transparency amidst the poor decisions he has undertaken during his tenure: "Maybe you'll be surprised by my answer but I want to win as much as everybody else, but the frustration of not winning and the pressure from maybe some players and from a large element of the fanbase, that we need to win, we need to spend money, we need to have a big manager, we need to have a big name, it affected me," Levy said.

"I had gone through a period where we'd almost won. With Mauricio we went through some very good times. We didn't quite get there but we came very close and we had a change in strategy. The strategy was 'let's bring in a trophy manager'.

"We did it twice and look you have to learn from your mistakes. They're great managers but maybe not for this club. For what we want, we want to play in a certain way and if that means it has to take a little bit longer to win maybe it's the right thing for us. That's why bringing Ange in was from my point of view the right decision."

However, that's not to suggest he should be completely exempt from criticism, with other failures of the past having put them in a position where a vast rebuild is needed.

Who is Spurs' worst-ever signing?

It is a testament to Levy's tumultuous reign that he has likely overseen the signing of many of the worst acquisitions in the club's history, given the increased money filtering into the game.

In an effort to compete they have had to up their spending, yet on numerous occasions he has received scorn for a lack of additions due to his frugal nature.

That was not the case when reinvesting the Gareth Bale money with little intelligence, as only one of the seven signed – Christian Eriksen – proved to be a real success. Another example with more recency is the acquisition of Richarlison, who thus far has failed to come even close to the quality needed to live up to his £60m price tag.

However, there is one man who usurps both of these errors to take the title, as Tanguy Ndombele remains the club's most expensive-ever signing, despite having offered next to nothing on the pitch.

Acquired for a mouth-watering £63m fee at the back end of Pochettino's time at Spurs, it was expected that this silky Frenchman would offer the foundation to build on the success already earned as they pushed for the Premier League and Champions League titles.

Tottenham's Tanguy Ndombele

However, within three years of joining, he would return to Lyon on loan, as a searing indictment of their poor and thoughtless recruitment. Napoli would take a season-long punt on him the year following, before yet another boss in Ange Postecoglou pushed him towards the exit door by this time sending him to Turkey.

It seems nobody wants Ndombele in north London, and with good reason given some of his performances. His most recent Premier League term saw him average an abysmal 6.58 average rating, with his best role still a mystery to most.

Journalist Paul Brown has suggested that, due to a lack of influence and the fee attached, no other signing comes close to being as bad as the 26-year-old has been: "I genuinely think, and I have done for a while, that Ndombele is one of the worst signings Spurs have ever made. I keep seeing a lot of people referring to him as a baller. You see clips of him doing skills and tricks and things on Twitter and YouTube, but that's all he is."

When delving deeper into the finances, it is hard to argue with him.

What is Tanguy Ndombele's wage at Spurs?

Given the huge fee expended to tempt him to join, it should come as no surprise that an equally astronomical salary went alongside it. That likely explains their desperation to continue shipping him out on loan, to offset some of the huge financial burden he brings.

After all, the current Galatasaray loanee is sitting on a mouth-watering £202k-per-week deal, which is slightly offset by the Turkish outfit who have taken him for the campaign. During the two and a half seasons actually spent in north London, his presence alone has amassed €30.3m (£26.2m) extra

To exacerbate the foolishness surrounding this deal, that salary marked a ridiculous jump up from the £29k-per-week he had previously earned in his homeland.

When does Tanguy Ndombele's contract expire?

Having been sent out on loan, it is expected that the seven-cap international will see out the final year of his Lilywhites contract, which expires in 2024.

tanguy-ndombele-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-hojbjerg-pochettino

Clearly desperate to find a buyer over the recent summer, this temporary exit until his permanent departure was seemingly the best they could conjure up.

However, it now means that in a year's time, they will recoup no fee for the man who remains their loftiest financial output to date. A truly terrible piece of business.

How much has Tanguy Ndombele earned across his career?

Having enjoyed brief spells of success, namely before leaving Lyon, the midfielder has amassed a fine sum across his career. Although, the bulk of that has come at Spurs' expense.

During that final year in Ligue 1, the creative ace posted a 7.04 average rating buoyed by his one goal and seven assists, via Sofascore. It was such a stellar year that likely excited fans of his arrival, with the combative ace billed as someone capable of scoring and assisting from deep. Seeing him score on his debut would have emphasised these high expectations even more.

However, in the end, he would score just ten times across his 91 appearances with thenorth London outfit, costing approximately £8.9m for every strike. In total Ndombele has earned €53.7m (£46.5m) from his various contracts, which still comes to less than the ridiculous total fee paid to bring him to England.
