Chelsea: Pochettino Eyeing Move For "Special" £35m Sterling Upgrade

Chelsea are starting a new chapter at Stamford Bridge with many mainstays departing this summer and a new manager in Mauricio Pochettino hopeful to lead the West London club to a comeback when they return to action next weekend.

The Blues will open their Premier League campaign with a challenging fixture against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge next Sunday and the former Tottenham Hotspur boss will be hoping to make a great first impression in front of an unsettled home support who experienced an unforgivable drop in the high expectations held last season.

Three different managers tried to repair the ongoing issues during the last campaign with neither Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter or club legend Frank Lampard able to stop the rot that ultimately led to a 12th place finish in the top-flight and failure to secure European football.

With less than a month left before the transfer window closes until the turn of the year, the coming days and weeks are crucial to ensure Pochettino has enough depth and quality all over the pitch to replace departures, improve key positions and bring Chelsea back to life over the 38-game campaign.

Who are Chelsea's transfer targets?

Now that Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign Robert Sanchez from Brighton and Hove Albion, the main focus is looking set on adding depth in midfield following a number of high-profile departures.

N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and Denis Zakaria have all moved on this summer, and it is reported that Pochettino has drawn up a shortlist of midfield targets that include the likes of Leeds United's Tyler Adams, Ajax star Edson Alvarez and Brighton's Moises Caicedo.

However, due to a difficult season for newcomer Raheem Sterling, Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise is a player who has been named as a potential target for Chelsea this week, as the club intend to improve the creativity in the final third and goal contributions delivered to compete more comfortably with their top six rivals.

It is believed that Palace are commanding a £35m transfer fee for their star forward this summer.

Will Chelsea sign Michael Olise?

After signing for Chelsea in a £50m deal last summer, Sterling joined the fold in West London with high expectations attached to him following his outstanding success at Manchester City.

However, it hasn't been the fairytale switch for the England winger who managed to only find the back of the net six times and delivered three assists over 28 Premier League appearances last season, an inconsistent output that contributed to the team's struggles to take all three points from their opponents.

As a result, the signing of Olise could present an opportunity to add depth to the attacking third, with the Crystal Palace star versatile in his positioning and to potentially secure the services of an upgrade on Sterling.

Over 37 Premier League appearances last season, the 21-year-old – hailed a "special talent" by his former manager Patrick Vieira – scored two goals, registered a whopping 11 assists and created 11 big chances, as well as averaging 1.5 successful dribbles, 1.9 key passes and 5.4 duels won per game, as per SofaScore.

When comparing Olise's output to Sterling's last season, the France U21 talent comfortably outperformed his position competitor in a number of key attributes including shot-creating actions per 90 (4.68 v 3.23), goal-creating actions per 90 (0.43 v 0.19) and aerial duels won (30.9% v 27.8%), as per FBref.

As well as completing more progressive passes (4.35 v 3.39), successful take-ons (1.77 v 1.54), tackles won (1.90 v 0.93) and interceptions (0.85 v 0.07) per 90 minutes played, demonstrating that the all-action winger is a much better ball-winner than Sterling, something that could be incredibly valuable to Chelsea.

With that being said, if Pochettino can seal a deal for Olise this summer it would be a major coup for the manager and would provide the team with a fresh perspective in the final third that could massively pay off in the long-term future of the club.

Zimbabwe Cricket unlikely to renew contract with Ntini

The former South Africa quick’s contract as Zimbabwe’s bowling coach is unlikely to be renewed when it expires in January next year, and he may even be released before that date

Former South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini’s contract as Zimbabwe’s bowling coach is unlikely to be renewed when it expires in January next year, and he may even be released before that date. Ntini is on a two-year deal that started in January last year.Zimbabwe squad for three one-dayers against Netherlands

Graeme Cremer (captain), Regis Chakabva, Peter Moor, Solomon Mire, Hamilton Masakadza, Sean Williams, Craig Ervine, Chamu Chibhabha, Sikandar Raza, Donald Tiripano, Christopher Mpofu, Richard Ngarava, Tarisai Musakanda, Ryan Burl, Malcolm Waller, Tendai Chatara

ESPNcricinfo understands that complaints from several players about Ntini’s approach have forced Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) administration to let Ntini go. With the World Cup qualifiers due to be played in March next year, ZC would prefer that process to take place earlier than his contract’s expiration date, so that they can find a replacement ahead of the tournament. But, ZC’s managing director Faisal Hasnain said discussions about Ntini, or anyone else’s contract, had not yet begun and that any suggestion that Ntini had been fired was untrue.”ZC denies in the strongest possible terms any suggestions that Makhaya has been sacked. When his contract comes up for renewal, will we deal with it in the manner we deal with all our contracts,” Hasnain said. “Makhaya is a valued member of our staff, he is highly respected and he has done some great work. He has his hands full preparing the team for the matches against Netherlands, Pakistan A and then the two Tests against West Indies.”Zimbabwe will be playing three 50-over matches against Netherlands in Harare next week and have named a strong squad for the series, although they will be without Brendan Taylor, who has been allowed a few days off after his return to the country. Taylor was released from his Nottinghamshire contract last week and will be available for Zimbabwe’s series against West Indies.Zimbabwe are pinning a lot of hopes on Taylor’s comeback and the revamped structures to see them through to the 2019 World Cup but are planning to get there without Ntini. The South African has not obtained any coaching qualifications prior to or since getting the job, though he has gained significant experience. After almost six months under Dav Whatmore, Ntini was appointed interim head coach when Whatmore was sacked at the end of May. Ntini took charge of Zimbabwe for three ODIs and three T20s against India and two Tests against New Zealand. Zimbabwe lost all but one of the T20s. Ntini was then relieved of the head coach job in October, when Heath Streak took over but he stayed on as a member of Streak’s support staff. The Zimbabwe job was Ntini’s first foray into coaching after his international retirement in 2010. He is one of the ambassadors of the Nelson Mandela Bay Stars, the Port Elizabeth-based team in the Global T20 League, South Africa’s franchise tournament which kicks off in November.

Newcastle Could Sign £175k-p/w Star To Improve Barnes

Newcastle United could be set to complete their summer spending spree by swooping for a struggling Premier League star, with Eddie Howe's side returning to European competition this year.

What defenders could Newcastle sign?

According to the Telegraph's Luke Edwards, Chelsea's Marc Cucurella is being considered for a loan move to St. James' Park alongside Arsenal's Kieran Tierney, with the respective left-backs currently on the periphery at their London clubs.

Cucurella signed for the Blues from Brighton & Hove Albion one year ago for no small sum of £63m, but has largely flattered to deceive at Stamford Bridge and does not look set to usurp Ben Chilwell from his position in the Chelsea defence.

Howe stated last week that he hopes for one more signing this month after completing deals for Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento, and as per the Telegraph's report, Cucurella could indeed complete the business.

How good is Marc Cucurella?

The 25-year-old joined Brighton from LaLiga side Getafe in the summer of 2021 after the Seagulls matched his £15m release clause, proving to be an incredible piece of business following his extravagant sale to Chelsea one year on.

He was hailed for his "brilliant" performances by former Brighton teammate Leandro Trossard, and earned an average match rating of 7.17 – as per Sofascore – during the 2021/22 campaign, completing 82% of his passes, averaging 1.2 key passes, 2.7 tackles and 1.9 clearances per outing.

Despite failing to reach the same lofty heights at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella remains an impressive player and still ranks among the top 8% of full-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for passes attempted, the top 3% for tackles and the top 11% for blocks per 90, as per FBref.

marc-cucurella-newcastle-united-transfer-news-premier-league

The £175k-per-week gem would be the perfect option to share the workload with Dan Burn, who is solid and dependable for the Toon but offers a very different skill set to the marauding Cucurella.

Indeed, standing at 6 foot 6, Burn is not the most mobile but is resilient, and the variegated approach from the Spaniard could pay dividends as Newcastle look to compete across multiple fronts.

Such is his athleticism and attacking ability, therefore, that Cucurella could well prove to be the perfect option to bolster Barnes, who scored and assisted on his debut following his £39m transfer from relegated Leicester City.

Barnes' goal typified the best of his qualities and underlined just why Howe wanted his signature, darting past the shambolic Villan backline to latch onto Jacob Murphy's through ball and smack the ball past Emiliano Martinez, and with Cucurella's presence behind him, he could unlock the full scale of his potential.

Indeed, praised as a "livewire" by pundit Alan Hutton, Barnes scored 13 goals in the English top-flight last season despite Leicester's woes and ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers for goals per 90, and Cucurella's crisp passing, assured presence down the left flank and intelligent overlapping runs could well be crucial.

If Newcastle can wrap up a loan deal for the Spaniard, it would only enrich the pool of talent at the club, and the Magpies' chances of eclipsing last season's resounding feats could well be realised.

Liverpool: Reds Are Big Admirers Of Joao Palhinha

Liverpool are reportedly interested in a host of midfielders this summer, but two currently jump out from the crowd, following a fresh update.

How many midfielders are Liverpool signing?

The Reds had all sorts of problems in the middle of the park last season, with so many individuals struggling for different reasons throughout the campaign.

Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were shadows of the players they used to be, which highlights why Liverpool were happy to sell them this summer, while the likes of Thiago, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were unavailable far too often with injury problems.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

While Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai coming in has bolstered the midfield options at Jurgen Klopp's disposal, it is still paramount that at least one more addition comes in between now and the end of the current transfer window.

In fact, two signings are arguably needed, with the No.6 role desperately in need of strengthening, as there is no natural option in that role currently existing at Anfield.

Having missed out on both Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to Chelsea, the search is now on to find alternatives, and it looks as though there are a couple of standout options.

joao-palhinha-liverpool-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Will Liverpool sign Joao Palhinha?

According to The Daily Mail, Palhinha is one of six midfield targets Liverpool are looking at in the remainder of the transfer window, with the Fulham man seen as one of the two the best options alongside Crystal Palace's Cheick Doucoure:

"Liverpool face a race against time to land much-needed reinforcements in midfield with Fulham's Joao Palhinha and Crystal Palace youngster Cheick Doucoure among the favoured options.

"Fulham's combative midfielder Palhinha, who led the league for successful tackles last term, is believed to be the most admired of the options. However, the club is unsure whether to stump up the £60million-plus it would take to pry the 28-year-old away from Craven Cottage."

Palhinha may not be the perfect option for Liverpool this summer, compared to Caicedo and Lavia for example, but he could still be an excellent signing. At 28, he certainly isn't getting any younger, and he would cost money despite that, but he made more tackles than any other player in the Premier League last season, with his overall tally of 147 tackles far higher than Caicedo (100) in second place.

Palhinha's ability to cover ground at will and be a big physical presence made him such an influential player for Fulham, leading Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp to say that the Portuguese has a "real presence" about him, also calling him "fantastic".

If the Reds could get him and one more in, their midfield would suddenly look far more well-stocked, though whether they could afford both Palhinha and Doucoure, who they are said to be advancing for, is not known.

Someone from No. 3 to 6 needed to play a big innings – Sarkar

Soumya Sarkar said one of the senior batsmen should have held anchor at the crease in the last 10 overs to boost Bangladesh’s chances of their first win on the tour

Bangladesh needed one of their No. 3 – 6 – Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman or Mahmudullah – to bat through the last ten overs in their chase of 196 against South Africa in the 1st T20I. That, according to batsman Soumya Sarkar, would have given the side the anchor they needed in their steep pursuit. As it happened, however, the four batsmen contributed only 48 runs and South Africa won quite comfortably by 20 runs in the end, leaving Bangladesh winless on the tour so far.”If someone from No. 3 to 6 could have played a big innings in the last 10 overs, it would have helped us,” Sarkar said. “Then we would have had a set batsman at the crease in the last 10 overs, making things easier for us. They made nearly 200 runs but we also made 175. If one batsman did well in the middle overs, we could have won the game easily. But this [performance] will give us confidence that we can also score 200 runs.”Sarkar had his first good outing on the tour on Thursday, with a boundary-studded 31-ball 47 that gave Bangladesh’s chase a powerful start. He shared brief, but brisk, partnerships with Imrul Kayes, Shakib and Mushfiqur, but once Sarkar fell in the tenth over, Bangladesh’s batting gave way too quickly. They slipped to 101 for 5 from 92 for 2, before Sabbir, Mehidy Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin provided some big hits to finish on 175 for 9.Sarkar, who had scores of 9, 3 and 8 in his previous matches on the tour, defended Bangladesh’s selection for this match. The visitors picked four pace bowlers and two frontline spinners, and went with one batsman short in the game.”If you want to talk about negative things, there are a lot of things to talk about,” he said. “If the bowlers did well and we played one less, you would have said we should have picked one extra bowler. Now that the batsmen couldn’t do the job, you are saying we needed one more batsman.”There’s no end to these things; you think that we had one batsman less, but our captain and team management thought this was the best way to go about things,” he said.Sarkar, however, admitted that Bangladesh have to overcome their weakness of playing too many dot balls, something the bowlers are unable to enforce on the opposition.”Dot balls are a big problem in T20s. We have to reduce that in the next game. Even when we bowled or fielded, we should have saved more runs or not given away the no-ball that went for four. They would have scored 20 runs fewer. Chasing 170-odd would have been a different story,” said Sarkar.
