Chelsea Interested In "Unstoppable" £109m-Rated Star, He’d Be Blues’ Drogba 2.0

Chelsea have reportedly entered the race to sign Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe in a huge development in the transfer saga.

What is the latest with Kylian Mbappe's PSG future?

After months – and indeed years – of speculation surrounding his future, Mbappe appears closer to the PSG exit than ever after being left out of the Ligue 1 giants' squad for their pre-season tour of Asia.

The Parisians' all-time leading goalscorer turned down the option of a one-year extension at the Parc des Princes, meaning he will become available on a free transfer next year should he not be sold this summer.

Real Madrid have long been considered the favourites to sign Mbappe, but RMC Sport reports that Chelsea have shown an interest in the France international, as have Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal.

It is reported that Al-Hilal are willing to pay PSG €200m (£173m) to sign Mbappe, and double that amount to the player himself over the next two years to persuade him to ply his trade outside of an elite European club.

Are Chelsea going to sign Kylian Mbappe?

This is not the first time Chelsea have been linked with Mbappe. However, the difference this time is that PSG are now actively seeking offers for the World Cup winner.

It is not known exactly how much it would take to persuade PSG to cash in – the sum being offered by Al-Hilal would surely be enough – but Football Transfers values the Frenchman at around £109m, which would make Mbappe the most expensive player in Premier League history.

The mammoth fee aside, it goes without saying that Mbappe would be an almighty acquisition for Chelsea. The Frenchman first emerged as one to watch when overtaking Thierry Henry as Monaco's youngest goalscorer at 17 years and 62 days in February 2016.

Mbappe has since cemented his status as one of the greatest players of his era across six goal-laden campaigns with PSG, during which time he has scored 212 goals in 260 appearances in all competitions, on top of his international success with France.

As per The Analyst, Mbappe ranks in the top 2% of all forwards for goals scored last season across Europe's top five leagues, the top 1% for shots, and nobody rates higher in terms of touches in the opposition box.

While more than just a goalscorer, it is the 148 goals in 176 Ligue 1 appearances – an average of 0.84 goals per 90 minutes – that will get Chelsea supporters most excited about a deal going through.

That type of scoring rate has never been seen at Stamford Bridge before, though Didier Drogba – one of Chelsea's greatest-ever strikers in terms of goals scored – 104 times in 254 Premier League games at a rate of 0.41 per 90.

Didier Drogba with the Champions League trophy.

That gap between Mbappe and Drogba highlights just how prolific the PSG forward has been over his career to date. However, Drogba's figures are skewed somewhat by a couple of off-seasons, including the campaign he returned in 2014-15.

Indeed, if you take Mbappe's figures from last season and Drogba's from 2009/10 – his best in a Chelsea shirt – they scored at a staggeringly similar rate: 0.93 per 90 for Mbappe; 0.94 for Drogba, as per FBref.

When taking assists into the equation, Drogba outperformed Mbappe (1.27 goal involvements per 90 v 1.09), while they found the net from a similar number of their shots on target (0.42 v 0.36 respectively).

Mbappe is showing more longevity than Drogba and, as Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti put it last season, is an "unstoppable" force.

Chelsea have been accused of overspending in recent windows, but no price would be too much if Mbappe is indeed in their reach.

Our shot selection wasn't up to the mark – Kohli

Virat Kohli and Sanjay Bangar have said the shot selection of India’s batsmen, and lack of support for MS Dhoni from the lower order cost them in the fourth ODI in Antigua

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Jul-20173:45

Batsmen let the team down – Bangar

India captain Virat Kohli and batting coach Sanjay Bangar have rued the shot selection of their line-up, saying the batsmen let the team down in their narrow 11-run loss to West Indies in the fourth ODI in Antigua. Chasing 190, India were steered by opener Ajinkya Rahane’s 60 and a 114-ball 54 from MS Dhoni. But Jason Holder’s 5 for 27, that included four wickets in the last five overs, bowled India out when they needed 14 runs from the last over.”We bowled really well to restrict them to 189,” Kohli said after the match. “Our shot selection wasn’t up to the mark, losing crucial wickets at crucial stages. You’ve got to keep up the momentum through the game. Credit to the West Indies bowlers, they created those dot balls that induced those mistakes. The pitch felt a bit two-paced, apart from that I don’t think there was anything else in the pitch. We faltered with the bat and that can happen in this game. We just have to put this behind us and come back fresh for the next game.”Apart from Rahane and Dhoni, no other India batsman in the top five reached double figures as Shikhar Dhawan fell for 5, Kohli for 3 and Dinesh Karthik, who came in for an injured Yuvraj Singh, for 2. In the lower order, too, no batsman crossed 20 as India struggled to get the runs ticking in the middle overs, scoring only 54 between the 21st and 40th overs.”It (the pitch) kept getting slower and slower because shot-making wasn’t really easy and those have been the nature of wickets we have seen so far because, again, we are playing on the same track [we played on] just two days ago,” Bangar explained later. “So the wicket kept getting slower and slower, we didn’t really bat to our potential because it was a gettable score. I just felt that batsmen let the team down. When Hardik [Pandya] got out it was still run a ball, when Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) got out, it was still run a ball, so in these situations shot selection was really crucial. And at times I just felt that they erred in that.”Plan was definitely for someone to bat deeper into the innings and that’s what Ajinkya did till the time he was given out. Till that time we were really on course and we also lost couple of wickets after Ajinkya, even Kedar got out to a good delivery. Those wickets in the middle overs actually pushed us back and the run rate kept on creeping higher and higher.”We encountered this situation even in the previous game where we lost couple of wickets in the first 10 overs. But we still managed to get to 260 on a wicket which was very very damp. Suffice to say that we’ve been playing on some wickets which have been difficult wherein some wickets have been damp. So shot-making was a bit difficult but credit to them that they executed their plans really well. I just felt that it was a very very gettable score.”A lot of questions will be asked of Dhoni’s innings, as he brought up his half-century off 108 balls, the slowest by an Indian batsman in ODIs since 2001. Even though he had scored an unbeaten 78 off 79 balls in the previous match, on Sunday he started cautiously to provide some stability after India lost early wickets but failed to see them through by hardly taking any risks. Bangar said it was difficult for Dhoni to play with freedom when the batsmen after him did not give him able support.”See, you need to assess the conditions. At times you need to play the situations well and when you’re batting higher up the order, which MS is doing, and with the kind of depth that we have at No. 6, 7 and 8, and when they don’t really come off, he can’t play with the kind of freedom that he should. It all boils down to how the batsmen at the other end are also batting and how many wickets we have in hand, because one of our plans is to not lose too many wickets in close intervals and when the wickets fall, we try to rebuild.”

Man United: Goldbridge drops big Hojlund price tag claim

Mark Goldbridge believes Manchester United will not pay anywhere near the £86m quoted for Rasmus Hojlund, instead constructing a deal worth somewhere around £50m with add-ons.

Is Hojlund joining Man United?

It's no secret that Man United are desperate to sign a new number nine this summer and the man Erik ten Hag is eager to fill the role with is Atalanta's Hojlund.

There had been links with Randal Kolo Muani, links with Victor Osimhen and, of course, links with Harry Kane. However, a mixture of price and availability scuppered any potential deal, which could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for Ten Hag.

The Dutch coach is keen to work with Hojlund, as the forward is to work with Ten Hag, and it appears the saga is set to reach a satisfying conclusion for all parties.

One issue in negotiations has been La Dea's large asking price with the Serie A side publicly suggesting they would require a fee of approximately £86m.

However, there have been contrasting reports about the finances involved, with some sources indicating a deal closer to £60m could be enough to sign the Denmark international.

Goldbridge believes this figure will be even lower though, suggesting that United would only be willing to pay roughly £50m plus add-ons.

Speaking on The United Stand, he stated: "I'm going to repeat what we've always said: Atalanta are looking for about £60m. You know, £60m, which is about €67m. Man United are looking to pay between £40-50m. I would suspect the deal would get done for around £50m with add-ons.

"That is not £86m, it's not £80m, it's not even £70m and it's not £60m. We are looking around €60m/€50m, [which is] £50m/£40m with add-ons, and that's what it's always been. So, my only frustration in this deal is that every now and again, you go get a cup of coffee, you check Twitter, and you see some UK source talking about £90m and the fanbase starts panicking."

Goldbridge's optimism is buoyed by the fact that United have reportedly agreed personal terms with Hojlund according to Fabrizio Romano, although he quotes the asking price at around £56-60m.

Hojlund has only enjoyed one season in a top five European league, scoring nine goals in 32 appearances for Atalanta, while also having netted six in six for the Danish national team.

He has been praised for his physicality, pace and technical ability by Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini, who even compared the forward to Erling Haaland.

Who else will United sign?

It appears the next target on Ten Hag's shortlist is a midfielder and more specifically Fiorentina's Sofyan Amrabat. The Moroccan impressed at the 2022 World Cup and helped La Viola reach two finals last season, albeit they lost both 2-1.

He was described as "essential" by former England manager Fabio Capello (via Voetbal) following an impressive World Cup and boasts a great range of passing, a tireless work rate and a unique ability to break up danger.

Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla has suggested that Amrabat has agreed to move to Old Trafford and a deal could be conducted for approximately €30m including add-ons.

If Amrabat were to follow Hojlund to Manchester, then the Red Devils would have completed five signings during the transfer window with Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Jonny Evans having already finalised moves.

Coetzer renews Scotland plea for more opportunities

Kyle Coetzer has said Scotland, after putting in stellar performances against Full Member nations, deserve more chances than they’re currently getting

In a 10-day season, Scotland beat Full Members Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe convincingly•Peter Della Penna

On May 21, Scotland’s home season began in momentous fashion with a seven-wicket demolition of Sri Lanka. On June 15, they secured another famous win, beating Zimbabwe by 26 runs. Now, after just 10 scheduled days of cricket, it’s all been wrapped up.”We play 10 days of cricket and that’s our season over. Where are we meant to go?” Scotland captain Kyle Coetzer told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s just the frustration. We feel we’re playing good cricket. We just want to play more cricket. Ten days of cricket in our season just isn’t enough, clearly.”So we need to find ways around that. I guess we need some support too, to make sure we can get those extra fixtures. Fair play to Zimbabwe coming here and playing us in a couple of games. They like the idea of playing cricket and so do we, so we need to try and do that a bit more often.”One of the main legislative points of this week’s ICC annual conference is to determine whether Ireland and Afghanistan, the two preeminent Associates, should be granted Test status. Along with the right to play five-day matches, the increased funding and fixture opportunities are of great significance to up and coming teams.Scotland, however, are starting to get left behind. They are one of six Associates with ODI status, but lack a place on the 12-team World Cup qualification rankings table. While there is traditional lip service during World Cups about getting more games arranged for Associates against Full Members, Scotland’s series against Zimbabwe comprised their first ODIs against Full Members since the 2015 World Cup.Even with such limited opportunities, Coetzer said his side showed against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe that they are on the rise. “I think it’s pretty clear to see that the gap is getting closer and closer. Obviously on our behalf, having won the two games we have throughout this ten-day period is pretty massive for us. We need to be playing more cricket, it’s as simple as that.”There is a chance that Zimbabwe Cricket might invite Scotland over for a reciprocal tour in the coming months. The team’s captain Graeme Cremer said as much after a series-levelling six-wicket victory on Saturday. “We’ve enjoyed Scotland, the people are great here and they’ve looked after us. We’d love to come back here. We’re looking to have them later on in the year come to us. So that would be good if we can form that relationship with them because they play tough cricket. We know that and it’s good to have opposition that gives you a tough time.”‘It’s just the frustration. We just want to play more cricket. Ten days of cricket in our season just isn’t enough clearly’ – Kyle Coetzer•Peter Della Penna

This series, in addition to helping Zimbabwe build up to a tour of Sri Lanka starting June 30, was also a chance to get accustomed to conditions considering Scotland and Ireland have jointly bid for the rights to host the 2018 World Cup Qualifier in April. Likewise, Scotland would also benefit from an advance series in Zimbabwe should the qualifying tournament be held there.”We knew with us coming here, we need to assess conditions in case we do play [the 2018 Qualifier] here,” Cremer said. “We’re hoping we’ll get the bid and have it in our home country but that’s not up to us. It’s nice to come and see what you might be up against and we might meet Scotland in a crucial game in the Qualifiers so it’s good to play these teams and know what we’re up against.”Meanwhile, Netherlands – who host Zimbabwe for three ODIs this week – sit three points clear of Scotland on the WCL Championship table. The winner of that competition is expected to be the 13th team in the proposed ODI League to be used to determine the teams that play the 2023 World Cup.”After beating Namibia and then Namibia coming back and beating us, it’s clear to see that gap [at the lower end] is even closer too,” Coetzer said. “Namibia came over with a very strong team having lost in the final of the Cricket South Africa [provincial] competition. So they’re not a bad team at all. They’re a good cricket team and there are a lot of good cricket teams in that WCL.”For us, looking at the situation where we are at the moment, we’ve lost two games. That’s all we’ve lost in the WCL so far: played 10, lost two. Where we sit is where we sit. You can’t expect sides to go out and win every single one of their games. How is that meant to happen?”But what we do know is that we need to play more cricket. We need more fixtures like this [against Zimbabwe] and more of an even share of some of that money that’s going around because that will help us go a long way, help us keep our players in the game as long as possible.”

Newcastle United: Howe "actively working on" signing "top-class" player

Newcastle United have been given no 'indication' by Southampton that they would be willing to lower their asking price for defender Tino Livramento, who is the only target Eddie Howe is 'actively working' on at St James' Park right now, according to journalist Alex Crook.

Is Tino Livramento moving to Newcastle United?

According to talkSPORT, Southampton recently turned down a proposal for Livramento from Newcastle United this window worth in the region of £30 million.

The Saints are demanding a fee of around £50 million for the Croydon-born defender and don't want to lose his services this summer despite their relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.

Chelsea have also held talks with Southampton over Livramento earlier in the summer and discussed a potential deal worth £38 million that would see the 20-year-old loaned back to St Mary's Stadium for the duration of 2023/24, as per The Daily Mail.

Nevertheless, journalist Ben Jacobs indicated that Livramento wasn't too keen on a move back to Stamford Bridge, stating to NUFC Matters on YouTube: "Chelsea were considering buying him back because they’ve got a buy-back option, but Livramento was not particularly enthused by that because the logic was that he would be bought by Chelsea and then loaned back to Southampton. I don’t think anything got particularly serious with those talks, but it shows Livramento didn’t really want to be bought and loaned back because he would feel like a commodity."

Livramento suffered a horrific ACL injury in April 2022 that kept him out for almost the entirety of the following campaign, though he did return to make two cameo appearances at the tail end of last term.

Cited by The Southern Daily Echo, fears of an injury recurrence came to the fore last Saturday when Livramento was forced off after 45 minutes against AZ Alkmaar in a friendly clash; however, the young full-back moved to calm anxiety surrounding his withdrawal, writing on social media: "Guys I’m fine, it was planned for me to play 45 before the game! I’m not injured and feel great after another good run out."

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Crook confirmed that Newcastle United's only current transfer priority right now is Livramento, though he doesn't expect Southampton to lower their demands for the England Under-21 international.

Crook stated: "Yeah, I think it's the only deal, as far as I'm concerned, that they are actively working on at the moment.

"They had three targets at the start of the transfer window – Harvey Barnes, Sandro Tonali, and Tino Livramento, who can obviously fill in for Kieran Trippier at right-back and be a long-term successor, and can even fill in at left-back.

"That's an area that Eddie Howe is a bit concerned about, as well as Dan Burn did last season. The problem is the price and again, Southampton aren't going to be bullied on the cheap.

"When Newcastle first enquired, they were told he'd cost £50m, and I've not been given any indication that Southampton are going to lower that."

Who else could Newcastle United bring in this window?

Tuttosport via Sport Witness claim that Newcastle United and Aston Villa are both keen on Juventus winger Federico Chiesa and would be willing to part with a fee of '€50m plus bonuses' to land the Italy international.

Tavkim via Chronicle Live indicate that Chiesa's international teammate, Nicolo Zaniolo of Galatasaray, is another target for the Magpies this summer and it is said that they would pay up to £30 million to bring the former Roma forward to St James' Park.

Newcastle United are also said to be tracking Red Bull Salzburg defender Oumar Solet amid fierce competition from Everton, Inter Milan and Torino for the France Under-20 international, according to The Daily Mail.

Solet has spoken about his future ambitions to the outlet, stating: "I have a lot of ambitions, to be honest. I’m just on my way – for sure the Premier League excites me a lot."

Middlesex survive collapse to sneak London derby

Middlesex survived the loss of six wickets for 20 runs to sneak an enthralling London derby by one wicket in front of more than 27,000 at Lord’s

Steven Finn hit a dramatic winning boundary off Ravi Rampaul to earn Middlesex a nerve-shredding one-wicket victory in the NatWest T20 Blast against Surrey before a near sell-out 27,205 London derby crowd at a floodlit Lord’s.A sudden Middlesex collapse left Middlesex needing nine runs from the last three overs but with three wickets still intact. Then Jade Dernbach had Nathan Sowter caught at cover and John Simpson, trying to turn Ravi Rampaul to leg, was caught for 7 off a leading edge. From 133 for 3, chasing 159, Middlesex had staggered to 153 for 9.That left last man Finn coming in to join Tom Helm with six still required. He survived a close lbw appeal from Rampaul before the next ball, also angled into his pads, flew away for four leg byes. Rampaul’s next ball, the fourth of the 19th over, was an attempted slower ball and Finn clipped the resulting full toss to the midwicket ropes amid wild scenes.Surrey captain Gareth Batty had earlier taken 4 for 14 with his off spin, including a double-wicket maiden in the 16th over when he dismissed both Eoin Morgan and Tim Southee, to set in motion the collapse which produced such a thrilling finish on a two-paced pitch. That Middlesex wobble

133-4 Morgan 15.2
133-5 Southee 15.3
143-6 Higgins 16.3
150-7 Franklin 16.6
153-8 Sowter 17.6
153-9 Simpson 18.1

Only Kumar Sangakkara, with 70 from 42 balls, took the attack to Middlesex’s bowlers for anything other than a brief cameo and Surrey’s eventual 158 for 9 never looked enough.Dawid Malan and Paul Stirling began the chase well, the left-handed Malan hitting two fours in the first over from Dernbach and the stocky Stirling plundering two fours and a remarkable swatted six over wide third man from Sam Curran’s opening over.At 37, and after Malan had driven Rampaul’s first ball high for four, Stirling fell for 23 in that same fourth over as he mishit to mid off. Malan, however, twice swung Rampaul for huge legside sixes in a sixth over which ended with Middlesex well ahead of the required rate at 64 for one.Middlesex T20 captain Brendon McCullum made only 9 before slugging Batty’s second ball high to long on, where 39-year-old Sangakkara took a good tumbling catch to his right, and Surrey’s hopes rose when Malan chipped a low catch to Ollie Pope at extra cover from a ball which seemed to grip the surface.Malan made 41 from 26 balls, and his early aggression allowed Morgan and Franklin time to steady Middlesex’s reply, which they did with a judicious mixture of easy singles and the odd more adventurous stroke in a fourth wicket stand of 53 in six overs.Captains’ views

Brendon McCullum (Middlesex):
“It was a brilliant game of cricket, and both sides contributed to the spectacle. We want to play an aggressive brand of cricket, and you have to be true to that whatever happens. We sent in Tim Southee to take on Gareth Batty’s off spin and it didn’t come off. So be it.
“But if we get to the final stages of this competition then we want to be comfortable with the way we are playing T20 and, when the pressure is on, we need to be able to cope with that. Thankfully, Finny got us over the line in the end and 27,000 people have been hugely entertained.
Gareth Batty (Surrey):
“I thought we might have pulled it out of the bag after not being at our best for most of the game. But it was not to be and Finny got them home.
“That lbw decision at the end against Finn? It was a close one, but the decision was made and we got on with it. Finny was good enough to get the runs needed after that, so fair play to him.”

That looked to be guiding Middlesex to a comfortable victory, but then Batty returned to have Morgan caught at point for 31, with Southee slogging the next ball into the hands of long off.Ryan Higgins drove his first ball for four, off Tom Curran, and then pulled his next for six. The next, however, was edged behind as Higgins went for 10 and the slide continued when Franklin was bowled later in Curran’s over for 23. Then came the fall of both Sowter and Simpson, and Finn’s late heroics. It was Surrey’s first defeat in the south group, after winning their first two games, while Middlesex added another two points to the one they gained for a thrilling tie against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham last Friday. The match began with Finn’s opening over, the second of the innings, being taken for 17 runs as Aaron Finch followed two legside fours with a pulled six into the Mound Stand. With Finch already having collected a five in the opening over, a direct hit run out attempt by Higgins deflecting off the bowlers’ stumps and racing away for four overthrows, Surrey were off to a flyer. The Lord’s crowd was just 800 below England’s domestic T20 record•Getty Images

Southee tried to stem the early flow of runs, producing a beauty to have Dom Sibley caught behind for 5 in his second over with the new ball, and when Helm replaced him at the Nursery End he bowled Finch for 22 through an attempted heave at his first delivery.Helm’s opening over only cost a single but Sangakkara increased the tempo again by lofting the unhappy Finn high over the covers for six and then taking a couple of steps down the pitch to swing Helm magnificently over long on for another maximum.Sowter’s introduction for the eighth over saw the Australian-born leg-spinner knock back Ben Foakes’ off stump with his first ball, the England Lions wicketkeeper-batsman only briefly firing with 13, but teenager Pope – who also made 13 – then added 23 with Sangakkara before he was bamboozled and bowled by a slower ball from the returning Southee. The Curran brothers did not last long, Stirling’s off spin accounting for them both. Sam was bowled for 5, back when he should have been forward, and Tom was also bowled, for 4, when he tried to force square a ball which seemed to creep through a little low to hit his off stump halfway up.Sangakkara, though, hit Franklin’s left-arm seam high over extra cover for six and also drove and swung fours off the same bowler in a 16th over costing 18. When Finn returned for the 19th over, however, nursing figures of 0 for 40 from his first three overs, the great Sri Lankan left-hander diverted a low full toss into his own stumps as he tried an unconventional flick to leg from outside his off stump. That success also allowed Finn to concede just two singles from his final over and, with Helm also bowling tightly in a 20th over in which Batty hit him straight to extra cover and Rampaul picked out deep square leg to go for ducks, the Surrey innings ended with something of a whimper.Surrey were missing opener Jason Roy, because of a shoulder injury, while Kevin Pietersen is not scheduled to make his T20 Blast comeback until next Wednesday, in the home match against Essex.
