Milner lavishes praise on Liverpool teammate

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has lavished praise on Reds teammate Andrew Robertson, claiming that the full-back ‘has been brilliant’ this season.

Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in last summer’s transfer window, and initially struggled for action due to Alberto Moreno’s presence at left-back.

An injury to Moreno in December opened the door for Robertson, however, and the Scotland international has been an ever-present for Jurgen Klopp’s team in recent weeks.

Indeed, the 24-year-old has started each of his team’s last nine Premier League matches, and made his Champions League debut in the 5-0 win over Porto last month.

Milner has said that Robertson’s qualities both offensively and defensively have made him a key player for the Reds during the 2017-18 campaign.

Milner told Premier League Productions in quotes carried by Liverpool’s official website:

“Robbo has been brilliant. I’ll help where I can but he’s a good player – he has shown that going forward and defensively as well. Sometimes you just see him going forward but he does some great work defensively as well.

“He is a great lad to have around the dressing room. He is similar to how he plays on the pitch, a bubbly character. We love that as a group, it’s fantastic.”

Robertson, who is currently on Scotland duty, is expected to be in the Liverpool XI for Saturday’s trip to struggling Crystal Palace.

Everton should pursue Marco Silva over Fonseca

Everton want to snare Paulo Fonseca from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer to replace Sam Allardyce but will have to match or beat the £8m per year that the Ukranians are prepared to offer the highly-rated manager, as per the Sun.

That would be a major financial gamble to take and I am convinced that Marco Silva is still a better option.

What’s the story?

Allardyce was only appointed in November but his stock could not be much lower among the Everton fans. He also does not tend to build long-term and for those reasons, his job is already under threat.

Fonseca is reportedly top of the Toffees’ wishlist but Donetsk rate him just as highly and are willing to offer the Portuguese boss an annual salary of £8m to keep him at the club and out of Everton’s clutches.

That is sure to test just how flush Everton are feeling these days and their commitment to spending again to improve their league position.

Silva is the better option

Those demands should do what Donetsk are hoping; price Everton out of the running for Fonseca. £8m per year is Guardiola and Mourinho territory; managers who attract the biggest names and who have won Champions League titles.

It is not good value for a manager who has never managed in England. Fonseca might well be worth a punt – that’s how Silva got his chance in England after all – but at £8m per year and potentially demanding a long-term contract, it’s too much of a risk.

Silva suffered a blip at Watford because there was a perception that he took his eye off the ball but you have to remember it was always likely that he would get the sack anyway, given the Hornets’ track record with managers, so it shouldn’t do too much damage to his reputation.

Silva knows the league now, plays attractive football and would look to build a more attractive side than the one Allardyce is operating with at the moment.

West Ham fans absolutely loved Declan Rice’s performance on Saturday

West Ham United bounced back from three consecutive defeats to pick up a massive victory at home to Southampton on Saturday, winning 3-0 against their relegation rivals in the English Premier League.Scoring all three goals in the first half and putting the game beyond doubt by the interval, the Irons were in superb form, turning around an alarming decline in form and results prior to the international break.David Moyes’ side had lost their last three by a three goal margin heading into the match, but punished Southampton through Joao Mario and a Marko Arnautovic double.[ad_pod ]Fans were obviously delighted with the performance and outside of the goalscorers had special praise for teenager Declan Rice, who impressed massively on the right hand side of a three-man defence. The 19-year-old has only made eight starts in the league for the Hammers this season but supporters believe he is the future of the side if they can hold on to him. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on his display…

Fred can add defensive discipline to Mourinho’s Man United midfield

As reported by The Mirror, Manchester United are set to rival Manchester City for the signature of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer.

What’s the story?

One of the key areas of the Man United team that Jose Mourinho needs to address this summer is their midfield, after a disappointing season in which they failed to battle rivals City for the Premier League title.

On their radar is Fred, who City are also interested in, with The Mirror reporting that he’ll end up at one of the two clubs before next season.

The paper reckon he’ll cost around £50m.

Can United convince him his future lies at Old Trafford?

[ad_pod ]

What can he bring to United?

Paul Pogba was effective in the first half of this season but arguably doesn’t have the midfield freedom to truly focus on supporting the Manchester United attack first and foremost.

Also, his lack of desire to show tactical discipline has visibly frustrated his manager in recent weeks and months, again subbing him off during their defeat to West Brom at the weekend.

Bringing in a player like Fred would certainly go a long way to solving that problem, his style of play focusing on winning back the ball and protecting his side’s defensive line.

He has plenty of experience under his belt despite being just 24 years of age and was integral to the Ukrainian’s progress to the Last 16 of the UEFA Champions League this season.

He could be a perfect accompaniment to the French international and forge a successful career at Old Trafford, especially with ageing defensive minded midfielders potentially on their way out of the club.

With goals and assists to his name this season too, is he the midfielder all-rounder Mourinho is looking for?

HYS: Should Newcastle sign Jonny Evans this summer?

Newcastle are one of a number of teams lining up a summer swoop for Jonny Evans – but would he be a shrewd signing for the Magpies?

According to the Daily Mirror, Newcastle will battle West Ham, Crystal Palace, Leicester and Everton to sign Jonny Evans this summer, with their sternest competition coming from the Hammers.

Alan Pardew said last year that he tried to sign the 68-cap Northern Irishman when he was in charge on Tyneside, but the towering defender couldn’t stop Pardew from getting the sack at West Brom.

As is the case every year, there are a number of Premier League quality players that will be looking for moves away from the relegated clubs, and Evans is certainly still good enough to compete in the top tier.

The former Manchester United defender is 30 now, but he would add valuable depth to a Newcastle squad that is short of it.

Jamaal Lascelles and Florian Lejeune are both in excellent form, and adding Evans could even give Rafael Benitez the chance to play three at the back in big games.

With a rumoured price of just £3million, moving for Evans should be a no-brainer for the Magpies.

So, Newcastle fans, do you want a bargain swoop for Evans? Let us know by voting in the poll below…

Southampton fans were delighted by Tadic improvement in crucial win

Southampton took a massive step towards English Premier League survival with a crucial 2-1 victory at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Saints had failed to win their last eight top-flight matches heading into the encounter and knew defeat would be disastrous to their hopes of avoiding the drop to the second-tier.

Dusan Tadic inspired the win, scoring in each half to cancel out Joshua King’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time.

Both goals were superbly taken and represented a big up turn in form from the Serbian, who had scored just four goals previously so far this season.

He’s been heavily criticised by supporters this season but appears to be peaking at the perfect time, with just three games remaining before the end of the season, including a do-or-die relegation clash with Swansea City.

Can he ensure that Southampton don’t end up in the Championship?

Arsenal fans blast Iwobi following Leicester defeat

Arsenal were brought crashing back down to earth on Wednesday night when they suffered a 3-1 defeat at Leicester City in the Premier League.

The Gunners put five unanswered goals past Burnley at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon as they gave head coach Arsene Wenger the perfect home send-off.

Their absolutely rotten away form in the Premier League continued on Wednesday, however, as they lost to the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.

Arsenal had Konstantinos Mavropanos sent off in the defeat, and goals from Kelechi Iheanacho, Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez secured all the points for the home side.

Alex Iwobi played 84 minutes of the clash before being replaced, and it would be fair to say that the Arsenal supporters were not pleased with his performance.

The Nigerian, who is believed to be on £30,000 a week at the Emirates Stadium, has only actually scored three times in 37 appearances for the Gunners this season, and his form has been criticised throughout the campaign.

The Arsenal fans were not pleased with what they saw from the 22-year-old, and the bulk do not want to see him in the first team next season.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Revealed: 66% of West Ham fans want a new goalkeeper this summer

West Ham fans have been debating their troublesome goalkeeping situation, and it seems they’re desperate for a new signing.

After reports last week suggested Portugal international Rui Patricio could be available this summer, West Ham fans couldn’t believe their luck.

Joe Hart was brought in on loan last summer, but the English international is third in the league for errors leading to goals this season (4), despite not even starting every match.

Adrian hasn’t been particularly impressive either, and recent reports suggested the 31 year-old will leave the club if David Moyes is still in charge next season.

There have been plenty of problems for the Hammers this season, but an overwhelming amount of issues have arisen from the lack of security at the back, and that starts with the goalkeeper.

Fans are clearly desperate for an overhaul to the spine of their team ahead of next season, hoping to avoid the type of relegation scrap they’ve had to endure this year.

When asked who they would like in goal next season, a whopping 66 per cent of votes went to signing a new stopper, with Hart and Adrian each receiving less than a fifth of the votes.

Celtic fans simply loved Callum McGregor’s performance in Scottish Cup win

Celtic have become the first Scottish side to win back-to-back trebles after a 2-0 win against Motherwell in the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers’ side went into the match knowing they had history within their grasp. Goals from Callum McGregor and Olivier Ntcham ensured that they didn’t leave Hampden disappointed.

It’s now six trophies out of six for the former Liverpool boss, with many Celtic supporters believing he is the greatest manager of the club in many generations.

Fans paid special tribute to Callum McGregor during and after the match, not just for his beauty of a goal, but also his overall performance.

He was superb, skilful and industrious throughout and supporters are just overjoyed with his progress at the club since Rodgers arrived.

After a phenomenal season, the club will now have a well-earned break before summer European qualifiers where McGregor will no doubt be crucial again.

Lichtsteiner may not be a glamorous Arsenal arrival but he adds experience and depth

As reported by The Daily Mail, Arsenal are on the verge of signing Stephan Lichtsteiner on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract from Juventus.

What’s the story?

The 34-year-old has been locked in discussions with the Gunners since last week, according to the paper, with a one-year deal in place to make the move to London.

Now he could become the first signing of the Unai Emery era at the Emirates Stadium.

The Mail say that Arsenal have beaten Borussia Dortmund to his signature, with the player set to act as cover for Hector Bellerin.

[ad_pod ]

Will he be good signing?

On a free transfer, signing Lichtsteiner has zero risk and he ticks plenty of boxes that could make him an effective signing on a short-term basis.

A 98-cap international with Switzerland, the veteran has vast experience at the top level, not just with Juventus but the likes of Lazio and French side Lille too. He has over 550 professional appearances to his name. That kind of pedigree can prove priceless in a team that is expected to win every week and win trophies.

It may not be the glamorous star signing that Arsenal fans expect, but he’s a born competitor and will add an edge to Arsenal’s lightweight defence when he plays, providing much needed competition and depth to the right flank, where Bellerin was arguably coasting last season.

This is a solid move in all respects.
