Misbah leads way with Lord's hundred

Misbah-ul-Haq’s unbeaten century on his first Test in England led his side into a strong position on the opening day at Lord’s as they closed on 282 for 6

A story about the return of one Pakistan player to Lord’s became a tale about the maiden appearance at the ground of another, as Misbah-ul-Haq’s unbeaten century on his first Test in England led his side into a strong position on the opening day. Misbah’s correct call at the toss delayed the much-anticipated return to the fray of Mohammad Amir but his efforts ensured this would be still be an occasion for Pakistan – and cricket romantics of every persuasion – to remember.Alastair Cook had also wanted to bat first on a pitch that has had to withstand regular unseasonal soakings over recent weeks and on what turned out to be a fine summer’s day it was easy to see why. Still, four wickets for Chris Woakes – including bowling nightwatchman Rahat Ali with the last ball of the day – and an impressive showing from the debutant, Jake Ball, meant England’s attack was not entirely quelled by a commanding, 148-run stand between Misbah and Asad Shafiq as an occasionally cloudy afternoon melted into a sunlit evening. At the age of 42 years and 47 days, Misbah became the sixth-oldest man to make a century in Tests. After jogging the single to take him to three figures shortly before 6pm, he gestured to his team-mates on the pavilion balcony before getting down to do a series of push-ups – further proof, if any were needed, of his supreme levels of fitness. He has been the pillar that held up Pakistan cricket in the wake of the spot-fixing scandal that erupted on this ground back in 2010 and it was symbolically apt that he played the same role on the field in their first match back in England since those dark days. There are many threads to the tapestry of this tour beyond the redemptive element of Amir’s return, not least Pakistan’s qualities as a team. The first day of the series immediately flagged that they would provide stiffer opposition than Sri Lanka, the visitors to England earlier in the summer, and while Mohammad Hafeez and Younis Khan would have been disappointed not to build on useful starts, Misbah and Shafiq were not so profligate.Misbah had never before batted in a Test in England, never played more than a few T20 innings at Lord’s, but he was not going to overawed by his first outing. Eight months ago, after leading his side to a 2-0 win over England in the UAE, he was contemplating retirement but he eventually decided to carry on in the belief that Pakistan would need him on this tour. It was clear to see why when he strode out with his side 77 for 3, bearded and resolute, a grizzled captain leading his men into uncharted waters and ready to repel all boarders.”Let’s go to work,” was the slogan from Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film and in Misbah and Younis, Pakistan have a couple of experienced wiseguys capable of doing a number on England. You have to go back to the 1990s for the last time Pakistan won a Test at Lord’s and their chances here relied on an experienced batting order being able to give a much-vaunted attack something to bowl at. England managed to chisel out Younis but, in the shape of Shafiq, there was another, equally determined Mr Green ready to step in and do business.England had resorted to subcontinental bowling plans, with short extra cover and short midwicket, by the time Stuart Broad coaxed a thick edge from Shafiq, on 34, but with only one slip in place the ball flew wide of Cook’s despairing dive. A clubbed square cut for four off Moeen Ali – who Pakistan never allowed to settle and conceded 46 runs from his seven overs – took him to a fifth 50-plus score against England but, with the shadows lengthening a feathered edge off Woakes finally broke the stand. Rahat then dragged on to give the persevering Woakes his best Test figures.Misbah and Shafiq might have been separated sooner, when a mix up left both batsmen running to the same end. Gary Ballance, making his own comeback after a year out of the side, threw hastily at the striker’s stumps when a lob to the bowler would have done the trick. Pakistan were on 184 for 4 at the time and still going about their recovery from being three down shortly after lunch.Ball nearly claimed a maiden Test wicket with his second ball but eventually removed Azhar Ali, to follow an early brace for Woakes in the morning session. Never mind devil, there was nothing so much as a mischievous imp in the pitch but Ball took that out of the equation with a yorker that knocked Azhar off his feet, though the No. 3 left the field shaking his head after utilising the DRS only for the Hawk-Eye to back-up Kumar Dharmasena’s decision that the ball was hitting leg stump by the finest of margins.Misbah began cautiously and he had made 2 from 19 balls when he gloved a Broad bouncer high and wide of wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow for his first boundary. A thin inside edge saved him from being lbw to Ball walking across his stumps on 11 and he might have been taken at second slip on 16, when the wayward Steven Finn found his outside edge only for Joe Root to shell a low chance, but he remained unperturbed. He unfurled some more aggressive strokes during Moeen’s exploratory overs, as well as taking easy runs off Finn. Later in the day, in struck four fours in five balls off Moeen – two sweeps, two reverse-sweeps – to move into the 90s and emphasise his mastery over England’s spinner.Despite Finn’s struggle, the bowlers did have some success. Memories had begun to drift back to England’s toil in the UAE following another fifty stand between Misbah and Younis when the latter, batting out of his crease such was the docility of the pitch, flicked a Broad delivery straight to midwicket to depart for 33.They had earlier pegged Pakistan back after a 38-run opening stand that involved a little bit of luck alongside some proactive batting from Hafeez. Anticipation of Amir’s first involvement had given way to a moment for Ball to savour and he nearly struck in his opening Test spell, Cook generously deigning to review an lbw decision against Shan Masood only for the replays to confirm Dharmasena’s suspicion the ball had pitched outside leg.Ball acquitted himself well as the stand-in for James Anderson, pushing the speed gun up towards 89mph and troubling both of the Pakistan openers. Hafeez could have been taken on 11, when a drive at Broad resulted in a thick edge low to the left of James Vince at third slip but he could not hold on one-handed. The same batsman flashed wide of the slips off Ball in the 10th over and Masood followed suit, off Woakes, moments after.Woakes, though, found success shortly before the drinks break, inducing a thin edge from Masood with a delivery than bounced a touch more than expected. He had his second four overs later when Hafeez, who had gambolled his way to 40, finally fell in lackadaisical fashion, trying to flip across the line only to offer a straightforward catch to Bairstow running across towards square leg.

Seamers dominated the opening day of the County Championship match between Gloucestershire and Leicestershire at Cheltenham as 15 wickets fell.Ben Raine claimed 4 for 57 to help bowl out the hosts for 183 after Leicestershire had elected to field. Jack Taylor top scored with 51 and there were two wickets each for Richard Jones and Neil Dexter. The visiting batsman found it no easier on a lively pitch and plunged to 86 for 5 in reply, David Payne and Josh Shaw taking a brace of wickets apiece. Leicestershire closed on 122 for 5, Angus Robson unbeaten on 49.Pace bowlers on both sides profited from swing and seam movement, despite sunshine and blue skies for most of the day.The tone was set in the opening over of the game when Clint McKay had Chris Dent caught behind for a duck. Dent had been announced as Gloucestershire’s wicketkeeper for the match after Gareth Roderick was forced to withdraw with a broken finger, sustained in Sunday’s NatWest T20 Blast win over Essex.Jones soon followed up McKay’s early breakthrough by having Will Tavare, brought into the side for Roderick, caught at second slip by Mark Cosgrove for seven in the fourth over.It was 24 for 3 when Graeme van Buuren was lbw to Raine for ten. Michael Klinger and Hamish Marshall then added 43 before Klinger edged a second catch to Cosgrove off Raine and fell for 25.Marshall had reached 19 when Charlie Shreck beat his defensive stroke and bowled him with the total on 69. But Taylor, selected for his batting while banned from bowling for an illegal action, more than justified his inclusion. He lost two partners after lunch was taken at 104 for 5, as Benny Howell fell lbw to Raine and Craig Miles looped a catch to wicketkeeper O’Brien off a quick ball from Jones.Taylor held things together, reaching a 59-ball half-century, with 6 fours, before being bowled off an inside edge by Raine with the total on 167. Dexter then wrapped up the innings with 2 for 11 in 4.5 overs.Leicestershire suffered an even worse start than Gloucestershire as Paul Horton fell lbw to the first ball of the innings from Payne.By tea, the visitors had reached 33 for 2, Dexter having been bowled by Liam Norwell in the tenth over for 15.The final session saw Mark Cosgrove caught behind, driving at Shaw with the total on 41.It was 63 for 4 when Hamish Marshall took a brilliant one-handed catch above his head at midwicket to dismiss Mark Pettini and 86 for 5 when O’Brien was pinned lbw by Payne.Opener Robson played the anchor role for Leicestershire, but was lucky to escape on 38 when edging Payne between first slip Klinger and wicketkeeper Dent.He battled away for 136 balls to be 49 not out at stumps, an invaluable effort for his side.

Aston Villa Have Scouted £20m Gem Ahead Of Summer Window

Aston Villa have scouted midfielder Habib Diarra with a view to making a potential move for the player during the upcoming summer transfer window, as manager Unai Emery aims to bolster his squad.

What’s the latest on Habib Diarra to Aston Villa?

According to The Sun, Aston Villa have sent scouts to watch Diarra in action for Ligue 1 side Strasbourg ahead of making a possible swoop for the youngster this summer.

As much as nine other teams are also keen on him however, among them are Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton Wanderers. With a fee of just £20m looking like it could be enough to sign him, Villa are unsurprisingly not the only club monitoring his progress.

Could Aston Villa sign Habib Diarra in the summer?

Despite the intense competition for the 19-year-old, Villa have the means to lure him to the Premier League, especially if they qualify for European football next season.

The club have enjoyed previous transfer success from delving into the French market, with Boubacar Kamara joining the side last summer for nothing and has since gone on to be valued at €51.9m (£45m), with Villa clearly hitting the jackpot on the midfielder.

Although he has been restricted to just 20 league starts due to suffering a knee injury last year, he ranks in the top five out of the Villa squad for accurate passes, interceptions and tackles per game, certainly proving that he offers valuable defensive contributions while his passing ability has clearly been on show this term.

Diarra, then, could become Emery’s next Kamara. The 19-year-old has a greater positional versatility in terms of being able to operate either in the centre of the midfield or slightly deeper in a more defensive position, whereas Kamara tends to play deeper and dictate play from there.

The Strasbourg midfielder offers a greater attacking threat than the Villa player, scoring three goals compared to none for Kamara, while also creating 18 chances to Kamara’s seven, and this attacking output from the heart of the midfield could be a big bonus for Emery.

Kamara does have the better defensive stats however, with his experience proving to be the determining factor, winning more ground duels (101 to 61), making more clearances (23 to 11) and attempting more passes (909 to 523) which proves that the youngster still has much to learn.

Adding another player who is similar to Kamara would be a wise move from the Spaniard, especially with his undoubted potential. The current Villa star may be four years older than Diarra, but gaining experience in the Premier League will allow him to soon reach his level.

Rangers Considering Swoop To Sign £10m Marksman

An update has emerged on Glasgow Rangers and their plans to bolster their attacking options in the upcoming summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Anastasios Douvikas to Rangers?

According to TEAMtalk, Gers boss Michael Beale could launch a swoop to sign Greek international centre-forward Anastasios Douvikas from FC Utrecht ahead of next season.

The report claims that the Light Blues are eyeing up the Eredivisie striker and that they could be competing with Scottish rivals Celtic to land his signature, with the Hoops having also been touted with an interest in the ace.

Earlier this month, Utrecht technical director Jordy Zuidam claimed that the Dutch club are looking for a fee in the region of €12m (£10m) before they will cash in on their top players, with the marksman being named as one of their biggest assets.

How has Anastasios Douvikas performed this season?

The 23-year-old centre-forward has been in prolific form in the Eredivisie in 2022/23 and the no.9 could come in as a big upgrade on current Gers striker Kemar Roofe.

Glasgow Rangers forward Kemar Roofe.

Beale, in March, confirmed that the Jamaican attacker will miss the rest of the campaign through injury and this means that the dud will end the season with just three appearances in the Scottish Premiership.

He has only played 24 games in the division since the start of last term and this shows that the ex-Leeds poacher is rarely available for selection, with injuries plaguing the dynamo.

Roofe racked up 11 goals – scoring every 2.18 outings – and one assist in that time and that is a decent return in front of goal but Douvikas could come in and offer far more reliability in his availability whilst also being able to provide a greater threat in the final third.

The Greek international, who is also seven years younger than the Gers man, has played 65 Eredivisie games since the start of last season and has plundered 18 goals and four assists in 31 matches in the current campaign – a strike every 1.72 clashes.

This shows that the 23-year-old is more durable, based on his vastly superior appearance record, and has the potential to score goals more frequently than the Light Blues liability.

Douvikas, who was hailed as "sharp" by journalist Josh Bunting, has created seven 'big chances' for his teammates in 22/23 and Roofe has provided his fellow Rangers players with four in the last three years combined, which suggests that the Utrecht star would offer far more creativity from the number nine position by providing others with opportunities to score on a regular basis.

Therefore, Beale could land a big upgrade on the ex-Anderlecht striker by beating Celtic to the signing of the Eredivisie titan in the summer transfer window.

Joe Burns undeterred by scarring Sri Lanka Tests

After a lean first two Tests, in which he managed just 34 runs in four innings, Joe Burns hopes that he – and his team – can put in an improved performance in Colombo

Daniel Brettig10-Aug-2016

While Joe Burns made 72 in the tour warm-up match, he has not played an innings of substance in the first two Tests•AFP

Joe Burns’ arms are scarred. The scars come from diving forward onto the abrasive squares of Sri Lankan cricket grounds in pursuit of catches at short leg. Painful as they are, deeper scars have been inflicted on Burns’ confidence as a batsman this tour, in which his struggles have been emblematic of a collective Australian failure not seen in many a long year.Having gone to India with Australia A last year, and again this year with a pre-tour advance party, and then spent two weeks in Colombo before the Tests began, Burns had seemingly been well prepared for the task. But from the moment he was bowled by a Rangana Herath skidder on the first afternoon of the series, Burns has slipped down an Asian wormhole of doubts and second guesses well known to plenty before him.In the second innings at Palekelle he was clean bowled by a Lakshan Sandakan special just when he looked to be getting set. He gifted Vishwa Fernando a first Test wicket in Galle with a hook to square leg, and then picked out cover when he attempted to take the attack to Herath in the second innings. If he has followed a personal mantra not to repeat the same mistakes, that is scant consolation for a return of 34 runs in four innings.”I’m not really one to be in or out of form,” Burns said in Colombo. “For me, every innings is different. I just try to focus on making sure I’m not making those same mistakes over and over. And in a place like the subcontinent, there’s so many things that you can learn from the experience that you don’t really worry about form, it’s about executing different game plans and developing different skills.”As a batter, you want to give yourself a chance to get in; it’s always disappointing to get out early in your innings. Especially in these conditions, you know it’s going to be tough to start. I guess that was the most frustrating thing about the second innings in Kandy – you know, when you do get a start you need to push on and make a game-changing score.”That’s probably been the most frustrating thing for me so far on the tour, having an opportunity there in Kandy to really go on with it, and not take that opportunity. Like I said, we don’t make any excuses, we just try to learn as much as we can. I’ve learned a hell of a lot over the last four innings, and hopefully I’ll take those lessons forward from here.”For a batsman raised on the hard, true Gabba surface, these lessons have been something like a young student’s first forays in Latin or quantum physics. Burns agreed it took courage to go away from what was comfortable and familiar in order to succeed in Asia, but also acknowledged this could not be used as an excuse for poor batting displays.”When you grow up, you learn a game, you play all your domestic cricket in Australia,” Burns said. “Some guys are lucky enough to play in the IPL or in County cricket and you get a taste of different experiences. I guess the courage comes when you’re asked to change your game in the cut-throat environment of the pressure-cooker that is international cricket. It does take courage.”I think all our boys are doing that. The results probably don’t show that so far. That’s why everyone wants to get back out there and prove it to ourselves, prove it to the world, that we are good enough to take the game on and to adapt our game and have success globally. Not only that, but to play well for Australia. We’re two-nil down in a series. It’s very frustrating at the moment. It’s a tough spot to be in. I feel like we’re doing everything we possibly can to turn it around.”Burns: “I guess the courage comes when you’re asked to change your game in the cut-throat environment of international cricket. It does take courage.”•AFP

All that is left for Burns, and for others such as Usman Khawaja and Adam Voges, is to hope they are retained for the dead third Test – Rod Marsh and Darren Lehmann will discuss team selection on Thursday – and then attempt to show evidence of learning. Australia must now be looking upon this match as much for next year’s tour of India as the saving of face in Sri Lanka.”It would mean a hell of a lot,” Burns said of making consolation runs. “The series has gone now, but you’re playing for your country. There’s so much pride to play for in the third Test, not just for the country but as a group. We’ve gone through a little bit of a tough time. But if we can turn it around and put in a good performance, it would be huge. I know all the boys are extremely motivated.”We’re doing absolutely everything we can to turn it around. We just have to trust that putting work into your game will get the results. International cricket is challenging because you play all around the world. To be an international cricketer you want to have success all around the world. That success hasn’t come so far in the first two Tests, with the losses that we’ve had.”But you want to be a part of winning teams as a group but also as an individual to be putting in strong performances around the world. That is what drives us as individuals and as a team. That’s why we’re working so hard and trying to be really open-minded to develop game plans and skills that are going to allow us to have success for a long period of time as a group.”As for fielding at short leg, the scars, bruises and near misses to the helmet have not yet dissuaded Burns from the job – something else for the selectors to keep in mind. “I don’t hate it because I feel like I’m always in the game in the subcontinent,” he said. “I feel like it’s an important position.”At times it is quite painful and scary. You can sometimes hear the ball fizzing past you. You can certainly feel it hit you when it does. Whenever you get scared you kind of just look at the badge on your helmet and it makes it all worthwhile.”

Leeds Can Replace Roca With "Unparalleled" 20 Y/o Ace

Leeds United suffered relegation down to the Championship last week as they finished 19th in the Premier League table with a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day.

The Whites are now braced for a summer of change, as they remain without a manager following Sam Allardyce's exit, and that could include plenty of movement in the playing squad.

One player who could be on his way out of Elland Road is central midfielder Marc Roca, who arrived at the club from German giants Bayern Munich last summer.

The Athletic's Phil Hay has reported that an exit is 'likely' for the 26-year-old and that he could make a return to Spain, where LaLiga outfit Real Betis have been credited with an interest in his services.

Who could replace Marc Roca at Leeds?

U21 midfielder Lewis Bate, who has been out on loan at Oxford United in League One, could make the step up to replace the Spaniard next season.

The 20-year-old, who has played four first-team matches for the club, offers similar attributes to Roca in the middle of the park as he has the ability to create chances for his teammates from a central midfield position and has the defensive awareness to make interventions at the back on a regular basis.

In League One, the youngster averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.84 across 28 appearances and made 1.1 key passes and two tackles and interceptions per game for his side.

Roca, meanwhile, averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.81 in the Premier League across 32 matches and made 2.7 tackles and interceptions and one key pass per outing for Leeds.

Leeds United midfielder Marc Roca.

This suggests that the pair, who both averaged between 79 and 80% pass accuracy in their respective divisions, are both combative midfielders who can also put their foot on the ball and use their quality to find teammates in attacking positions in order to create goalscoring opportunities.

Recruitment analyst and U18 specialist Connor Rowden claimed that Bate's ability to "control" games is "unparalleled" amongst his peers and this suggests that the academy gem could excel in the Championship in games that Leeds are expected to dominate in as teams potentially sit back in low blocks in an attempt to counter-attack against a side that was just in the top-flight.

He could use his ball-playing quality to wear down teams by rotating possession and shifting the opposition from side to side before utilising his creativity to play a killer ball to find a teammate in the final third.

The former Chelsea starlet's creative statistics in the third tier this season indicate that he has been able to translate his skills from youth level over to senior football and Leeds must now hand him an opportunity to showcase his talent in the second tier in 2023/24 after a full year of development under his belt.

Bate, based on his solid form for Oxford this term, could make the step up and save the club millions by coming in as a direct replacement for Roca, assuming the Spaniard does depart the Yorkshire side this summer.
