Southampton: £8.8m "monster" has doubled in value

It’s been a season to forget for Southampton so far, having registered just six wins all season, the Saints are bottom of the table and in the thick of a relegation scrap in the Premier League.

Last time out for the south-coast side was one that told the narrative of their campaign, going 3-1 up against Arsenal at the Emirates to come away with just a point after conceding two goals in the dying embers against the league leaders.

The Saints have seen three managers take charge of the squad this season which attributes to the disruption of their development, however, all is not doom and gloom with some immense talent shining through in gruelling times.

While defensive sluggishness has been a recurring theme for Saints this season – conceding the fifth-highest number of goals in the league (56) – Southampton have a propitious talent in their defensive arsenal.

How much is Armel Bella-Kotchap worth?

Armel Bella-Kotchap has been a revelation signing since Ralph Hasenhuttl secured his signature last summer.

The 21-year-old centre-back traded the Bundesliga for the Premier League for a reported fee of €10m (£8.8m), signing from VfL Bochum on the back of securing 22 Bundesliga appearances for the club.

The centre-back’s worth has now doubled, with his value rising to the €20m (£18.1m) mark – as per FootballTransfers – which is an impressive increase of 105% already, and it’s clear to see why the club have struck gold with his signature when analysing his individual performances for Saints this season.

Once described by former boss Hasenhuttl as a "one-on-one monster" in an interview with BILD, Bella-Kotchap ranks at 14th in the league for most challenges won, coming out on top in 50.5% of his attempted duels this campaign.

In a struggling side, the 21-year-old has been a shining light at the back for Southampton.

At 6 foot 2, the promising star has been a commanding figure in defence, winning 78% of his aerial duels – as per one-versus-one statistics.

The German international shows his versatility at the back both in the air and on the ground, averaging 6.3 pass interceptions per 90 minutes. Such numbers are regarded all the more impressive considering the defensive pressures Southampton have endured this season.

Also lauded by experienced analyst and scout @EBL2017 as having "the perfect temperament to match his physicality", the £43k-per-week centre-back has showcased his talent mentally also, receiving just four yellow cards in a frustrating season for his team; a mature head on a talent as young as 21-years-old.

Southampton have always been a side to produce fine prospects and develop them to the next level, take Liverpool centre-back and Champions League winner Virgil van-Dijk, for example.

With Bella-Kotchap, the Saints look to have secured a promising player who is rising in value. As the season comes to a close, speculation will begin over his future should Ruben Selles’ side fail to remain in the Premier League.

Allardyce Must Ditch Leeds Shocker Who Is "Horrible To Watch"

Leeds United face an uphill task to stay in the Premier League, and new manager Sam Allardyce will surely have to improve the defence if he is going to keep the Yorkshire outfit in the Premier League.

What changes must Allardyce make to Leeds' defence?

The 4-1 defeat against Bournemouth ensured that Leeds now boast the worst defensive record in the division, with a remarkable 67 goals shipped in the top flight, which has also included heavy defeats against Liverpool and Crystal Palace in recent weeks.

Fingers have naturally been pointed at both the goalkeeper and the defence after Leeds bested their own record of goals conceded in a calendar month, and huge changes must be made by Allardyce if he wants to avoid similarly disappointing defeats against the high-flying Manchester City and Newcastle United in their next two games.

Despite the number of goals conceded, three of Leeds' defensive options rank in their top six players this season according to WhoScored, with Pascal Struijk, Max Wober and Liam Cooper all performing to a fairly consistent level in the Premier League.

Should Robin Koch be dropped by Leeds?

This begs the question therefore of why Robin Koch has been the main man for Leeds at centre-back so far this term, with the 26-year-old featuring in 33/34 Premier League games, with a shocking WhoScored average rating of 6.52.

Signed from Freiburg in 2020, the Germany international has struggled throughout his time at Elland Road, failing to average above a 6.6 rating from WhoScored in any of his seasons in the Premier League.

Speaking on a Leeds United Live Facebook stream following a 5-1 defeat against Manchester United in 2021, Beren Cross was less than complimentary of Koch's performance.

He said:

“Koch and Struijk today, not good enough at all, for me. I think I gave them 3s in the ratings.

“I mean, Fernandes almost retired Robin Koch, it was just horrible to watch, at times, because he just could not get a handle of him."

Leeds United manager Sam Allardyce.

As a former defender, Allardyce will surely appreciate the need to have his best-performing centre-backs on the pitch for the final four games, and the stats certainly suggest that the £40k-per-week liability shouldn't be anywhere near the starting side.

He ranks 14th for tackles and sixth for interceptions per game in Leeds' squad, while his pass success rate of 77.6% is worrying considering he completes the second-most passes per game at Elland Road, which suggests that he often has the ball but doesn't know how to effectively use it.

Therefore, with defensive security a must for the tough upcoming fixtures, Allardyce must surely consider finally dropping Koch from the starting team.

44-Year-Old In Disbelief Over VAR Call During Man City Fixture

TalkSPORT's Mark Goldbridge has taken to Twitter to speak out over Man City's controversial equaliser in the Champions League against Real Madrid.

What is the reaction to Man City vs Real Madrid?

The two sides clashed in the first leg of their semi-final fixture on Tuesday night, with both teams desperate to try and get the upper hand heading into the reverse game.

It was the Spanish side who took the lead, with the La Liga giants taking 36 minutes to break the deadlock. Left-back Eduardo Camavinga dorve forward and found Vinicius Jr, who fired the ball past Ederson to send Madrid in front by half-time.

City fought their way back into the tie impressively though and it was Kevin De Bruyne who finally bagged the equaliser in the 67th minute. The Belgian had efforts saved earlier on in the clash but after a pass from Ilkay Gundogan landed at his feet, he fired a rocket of a shot into the next to even the game.

Despite Madrid continuing to threaten though, with Karim Benzema having an effort saved towards the back end of the half, the fixture ended level.

There was controversy though surrounding City's goal, with the ball seemingly heading out of play in the build-up to De Bruyne's equaliser. Upon inspection, Bernardo Silva controlled the ball whilst it was out of touch but the referee didn't rule it that way and the English side went on to score – beIN Sports later confirmed that it did go out of play.

It led to Goldbridge heading to Twitter to have his say on the incident. He was quick to admit his disbelief, as he said: "Can't believe that's the biggest game of the season in Europe and they've allowed a goal where the ball clearly went out. Never known a season with such bad officiating."

Did Man City deserve a result against Real Madrid?

It was Pep Guardiola's side who dominated possession in the fixture with a 55% share and they knocked the ball around with aplomb too, managing both more passes and a better pass accuracy than their opponents here (565 passes, 91% accuracy).

However, having the lion's share of the ball didn't really pay off – it was Madrid who actually had better chances and made their time in possession count more. The Spanish side had a better xG rate (although it was tight at 0.70 to City's 0.55) and they also had more efforts on goal with more big chances created.

Pep Guardiola then will need to ensure that in the second leg of this Champions League fixture that his side do more with the ball in terms of generating opportunities, though given neither team conjured more than 1.00 xG one would have to say it was perfeclty fair for City to head home with the tie on a knife-edge.

How Much Is Diogo Jota worth?

Wolverhampton Wanderers have undergone a season of change in the 2022/23 campaign, ending with the club being safe for another year in the Premier League.

There were doubts whether Wolves would remain in the top division at the beginning of the term, as Bruno Lage was dismissed with the club stuck in an abysmal run of form and looming towards the drop zone.

Things look to be on the up under Julen Lopetegui, who revived the Midlands side in November, however, the squad has struggled for goals and is tarnished as being the league’s lowest scorers.

With the summer breaks comes time for reflection, and over the years Molineux has hosted some bright talent, including a fair share of goal-getters both past and present.

Over the years, some bad business has plagued the club, most notably the selling of Pedro Goncalves, who has scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, just ten fewer than the entire Wolves squad in the Premier League.

It’s not all been bad business wise in terms of outgoings at Molineux, with one name leaving for big money at a time that suited both parties and have prevailed to be a strong deal.

Why did Diogo Jota leave Wolves?

Diogo Jota’s exit came by surprise, especially with it being a £45m move to the Premier League champions at the time, Liverpool.

Despite being an integral member of Nuno Santo’s squad in years prior, the "phenomenal" forward – as dubbed by Conor Coady – had fallen down the pecking order in the Midlands due to absent form, finding himself out of the starting XI.

The Portuguese international’s future at Wolves became more in doubt as the signing of Fabio Silva came at a time that would’ve made him further than third choice as the club’s starting forward.

How much is Diogo Jota worth now?

At 23 years old, Jota became Liverpool’s most expensive forward in the club’s history – at the time of signing – and given his status at Molineux, Wolves couldn’t deny the price offered for the attacker.

The departure of the Porto-born player made way for Daniel Podence to make an impression on the squad, with the current Wolves player out-scoring the Liverpool man in the Premier League this season – scoring six to Jota’s five.

When Jota’s future was in doubt, the club found a way to complete a multi-million-pound deal. It has benefitted the club hugely from a financial standpoint, with the deal being paid in instalments, coming at an advantage at a time when COVID-19 threatened teams.

Jota is now worth £52m according to CIES Football Observatory, seeing his value rise by just £7m in three years, showing that Wolves got the better end of the deal for a player that has been one in rotation in Liverpool’s set up.

The club have been criticised for some outgoings over the years, however selling a former star at a time of low form and morale for big money was a success story for all involved.

Holder looks for batting improvement

West Indies captain Jason Holder knows his team needs a much stronger batting performance in St Kitts than during their two tri-series matches in Guyana earlier this month

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jun-20161:53

‘Important to capitalise when ball gets soft’ – Holder

West Indies captain Jason Holder knows his team needs a much stronger batting performance in St Kitts than during their two tri-series matches in Guyana earlier this month. The series has moved on from the sluggish Providence Stadium pitch to the harder surface at Warner Park, which combined with the short boundaries makes it a more attractive ground for batsmen.Australia managed to post 288 for 6 at Warner Park on Saturday, enough for victory over South Africa, and West Indies get their first opportunity at the venue when they take on Australia on Monday. Holder said regardless of the change in conditions, his batting order needed to lift after being skittled for 116 by Australia in Guyana.”We didn’t bat well in the last game in Guyana,” Holder said. “We won the first game probably in the 48th over chasing 180. I think it’s obvious that we need to put some more runs on the board. This pitch here will be a lot better than Guyana in terms of strokeplay.”We saw the game yesterday and it looked like a pretty easy pace and pretty easy going for the batsmen. It’s important for the top four to bat as big as possible, give us a good solid foundation for our middle order to come in and capitalise.”West Indies have won four and lost four from eight ODIs in St Kitts since the ground hosted its first match 10 years ago. Last time they played there Denesh Ramdin slammed 169 off 121 balls and Darren Bravo scored 124 in what became a comfortable win over Bangladesh.”Traditionally playing here in St Kitts it tends to get a little slow,” Holder said. “It’s always been a slow track, but I guess the dimensions of the ground make it easier to hit the ball over the top and score freely. But having said that it could be a bit difficult, especially when the slow bowlers are on in the middle overs, to get the ball off the square.”I think we can use that to our favour. We’ve got two good spinners at the moment and there could be a possibility of playing three, you never know. I think it’s important we capitalise when the ball gets softer, as the Australians and South Africans pointed out, we try to peg back the scoring and keep it very tight.”Sunil Narine has been the most dangerous bowler in the series so far, with eight wickets from West Indies’ two matches, and Sulieman Benn has also proven difficult to get away. Offspinner Ashley Nurse is also in the squad as a third slow-bowling option.

Levy Could Regret Big Tottenham Manager Decision

Tottenham Hotspur are still in the hunt for a permanent successor to Antonio Conte and have been linked with several candidates across the last few months in N17.

Turbulence on and off the field has engulfed what has become a disappointing 2022/23 campaign and the air of uncertainty at the club has also hit the players, with speculation continuing to swirl over whether Harry Kane will remain a Spurs player next season amid interest from Manchester United.

In among the most high-profile names mentioned in connection with the job was former Bayern Munich boss Julian Nagelsmann, as per Sky Sports, though senior chiefs at the club have decided against pursuing the 35-year-old for the position despite having admiration for his work.

This leaves Tottenham still on the lookout for their next manager and it is still unclear who the man may be to move the Lilywhites forward as 2023/24 approaches.

Would Nagelsmann have been a good appointment by Tottenham Hotspur?

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Paul Brown has said that hiring Nagelsmann would've been an 'ambitious' appointment by the Tottenham hierarchy.

Brown told FFC: "I think it would have been quite ambitious really and a huge coup actually if Spurs were to get him, considering everyone pretty much is saying that Spurs are in a bit of a mess this season after what Conte came out and said about their players and the recruitment there, the fact they don't have a director of football running the show, to go for someone of Nagelsmann's profile was probably always going to be a long shot. I don't think he has any interest in the Spurs job. He's not going to rock up there, but I'm not sure he would have been the right candidate anyway really."

BBC Sport have also reported that Spurs chose to pass on hiring Nagelsmann, something that former Lilywhites' goalkeeper Paul Robinson has hit out at in a recent interview, saying: "Tottenham need to act and they need to act quickly. Why wouldn't they be interested in Nagelsmann? He is one of the most innovative, modern-thinking, modern-day coaches. If Spurs aren't in the hunt for a manager like that it is worrying. I potentially think they have sounded his people out and they have gone 'no, don't waste your time."

Nagelsmann has managed to achieve some notable feats despite his youthful complexion for a manager and managed to guide Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title in 2021/22 with three games to spare.

Dubbed 'baby Mourinho' by some, he is also the youngest manager ever to reach the semi-final stage of the Champions League, something he achieved with RB Leipzig shortly after his 33rd birthday. There is no doubt that Nagelsmann would've lifted a Spurs support desperate for some fresh ideas on the field, while his work with developing young players has also been a feature of his management style.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg shared quotes from Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni earlier this year detailing that he often observes Nagelsmann's methods, which read: "He's a great coach. We're following his work with big interest. We often look at his training sessions, we really like the way he trains. I hope that one day I'll get to meet him personally."

Tottenham have now moved on their search to other candidates and Sky Sports claim that Feyenoord are growing 'increasingly concerned' that they will lose Arne Slot to the north London outfit. Nevertheless, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou, Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi and Fulham boss Marco Silva and Brentford's Thomas Frank are also being considered.

Despite most outlets suggesting that Spurs aren't looking to hire Nagelsmann, The Telegraph's Matt Law has suggested that they may go back in for Nagelsmann if he is endorsed by a prospective incoming sporting director.

Daniel Levy has a lot of thinking to do and big decisions to make in order to satisfy the Tottenham support and Nagelsmann would be a name that would tame the fans' anguish at current affairs in N17.
