Crystal Palace: Hodgson is a short-term appointment regardless of results

Journalist James Olley has claimed Roy Hodgson's return to Crystal Palace will be a short-term appointment regardless of results, and that he will not continue beyond the end of the season.

What's going on at Crystal Palace?

With the Eagles winless in 2023, the club made the decision to sack manager Patrick Vieira and bring back his predecessor.

Palace are 12th in the Premier League but are just three points clear of the relegation zone, and their poor form has now placed them in a relegation battle.

The decision to re-hire Hodgson is a surprising one given that the 75-year-old had otherwise retired from coaching, but it seems that the decision was made with the threat of relegation in mind.

Speaking on ESPN FC, Olley claimed that Hodgson will only be in charge until the end of the season, even if he does particularly well, as there is no desire on either side for him to extend his stay.

"He won't probably have any aspirations about going into next season," he stated.

"It's not a case of if he wins seven out of his 10, 11 games, he's suddenly going to decide [he] wants a new two-year contract.

"I very, very much doubt that will be the case. The job is pure and simple: Roy, come in, you know the club, you know the league, you know the players, get us to 40-odd points."

Was hiring Hodgson the right decision for Crystal Palace?

With the club's aims focused solely on survival, having a manager familiar with the squad, league and club may prove useful as they aim to end their rotten spell of form, but his appointment may also point to a lack of ambition from the club's hierarchy.

When Hodgson initially departed, Palace were playing football which focused on efficiency over aesthetics, and Vieira was brought in as a long-term manager to help guide the team to greater heights than Hodgson had managed.

Some may argue Vieira wasn't backed enough in the transfer market, with the squad desperately lacking goals, and Hodgson may struggle to get this current group of players to improve in front of goal.

The aim now is for Hodgson to steer Palace to safety, before the club look in a different direction for a coach who can maximise this current squad's potential and bring a more exciting style of play to Selhurst Park.

However, their failures this term suggest the likes of Steve Parish absolutely must get the next appointment right.

Big-Name Boss Backed As Spurs Conte Replacement

Former Spain star Luis Garcia has backed Luis Enrique to replace Antonio Conte as Tottenham Hotspur manager.

What's going on with Conte and Spurs?

There is a growing expectation that the Italian is to be dismissed from his role as Spurs manager, after a disappointing season and an explosive rant in a press conference.

Julian Nagelsmann has been touted as a possible replacement, with the German now available following his sacking at Bayern Munich, whilst Mauricio Pochettino has also been linked with return to the club.

However, Garcia has suggested that former Spain and Barcelona coach Enrique has the experience needed to succeed at Spurs.

Enrique, a Champions League winner with the Blaugrana, was fired from his role at Spain following the World Cup, but has plenty of knowhow under his belt, and would be another big-name appointment at the club.

Speaking on ESPN FC (1.00), Garcia backed the Spaniard to succeed in North London.

"I think it's a fantastic club and Luis Enrique's got everything to be successful there," he stated.

"He's got that energy, he's got that attitude, he is ready to fight. I think he's got the experience to build something very unique there at Tottenham, so it could be a fantastic choice."

What kind of manager should Spurs go for?

The likes of Conte and Jose Mourinho have been appointed by Daniel Levy in recent years as proven winners with excellent track records, but neither succeeded at the club.

It has been suggested that the problems at Spurs lie in recruitment, rather than with the coaches they hire, and this indicates that Enrique could follow the same path as a big-name appointment who could ultimately fail to deliver on expectations.

Spurs need to rediscover their identity, and a long-term appointment could suit them more than another short-term hire, and perhaps the club need to explore a different route than Enrique.

Vincent Kompany and Michael Carrick have both impressed in the Championship, and a gamble on a younger, promising manager such as one of these two, with a long-term rebuild plan could work better than chasing short-term success with a big-name coach.

With Harry Kane's future up in the air, the job on offer is not an easy one, and it may take a long time for a new coach to rebuild the squad to compete for major honours. Spurs need to show patience with their next appointment, no matter who they choose as Conte's successor.

Spurs: Kane ‘already looking’ for new club

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is ‘already looking’ for a new club beyond Spurs, according to a report.

The Lowdown: Kane future uncertain…

The 29-year-old is set to be one of the hottest topics discussed in north London this summer, especially with his contract set to expire in 2024.

Kane could leave Spurs on a Bosman deal next year as things stand with Premier League rivals Man United among the sides showing an interest in the player.

The England international, who become the Three Lions’ all time top goal scorer after his penalty against Italy on Thursday evening, is a key asset for Antonio Conte and whoever replaces him thereafter.

Reports have previously suggested that new deal talks have been opened with Kane, but according to a new report, the forward is now seriously considering his options.

The Latest: Kane ‘already looking’ for new club…

According to Spanish news outlet Libertad Digital, and journalist David Lacruz, Kane is ‘already looking for a destination’ beyond Tottenham.

The Lilywhites are apparently worrying about his ‘no-renewal’ as the attacker himself has now ‘gotten tired’ with the situation at Spurs.

Kane is believed to be ‘fed up’ with chairman Daniel Levy’s ‘broken promises’ and the ‘endless projects’ that have been failing.

He apparently doesn’t plan to extend his deal, coming after he nearly joined league champions Man City in the summer of 2021.

The Verdict: Blow for Spurs…

The homegrown ace has starred for Tottenham yet again, scoring a brilliant 21 goals and two assists in 28 league starts this campaign.

He also become Spurs’ all-time top scorer this season, surpassing the legendary Jimmy Greaves and proving to the world that he is one of England’s best ever centre-forwards.

Gareth Southgate, speaking after Kane also broke Wayne Rooney’s international goalscoring record this week, stated:

“He is a brilliant professional and to do it as quickly as he has with still a lot of his career to come is an incredible achievement.

“Huge credit to him. The players gave him a brilliant reception afterwards and I think that was a response to both the record and what he’s just had to recover from as well.”

Losing such a player would come as a major, major blow to Spurs and supporters will be hoping this report isn’t backed up by more mainstream media outlets.

Spurs return to action against Everton on April 3 and Kane will be set to showcase just how important he is yet again.

Leeds Could Lose 44 y/o Who Is "Rated" Across The Game

Leeds United director of football Victor Orta could be set to leave his position at Elland Road if the Whites are able to survive the drop this season.

Could Orta move on sooner rather than later?

The Spaniard has recently spoken to media back in his homeland of his desire to return to Spain at some point in his career:

“Being Monchi’s successor, in any team, I don’t know if it’s something I’m prepared for, but obviously at some point, I want to return to Spain," he said.

This comes at a time when the Whites are fighting for their life at the wrong end of the Premier League table with a potential return to the Championship on the cards.

And speaking on his podcast, journalist Phil Hay has claimed the Spaniard could leave Leeds to join a 'major' Spanish club:

"It wouldn't be any surprise to me if he went from Leeds to see him at a Spanish club – you know, a fairly major Spanish club.

"And I think – I always say this – there are a lot of people in the game who really rate Orta and I don't think he'll be short of offers particularly."

Could Leeds improve on Orta?

Orta's time in Yorkshire has certainly had its ups and downs both on the pitch and off it as the Whites have endured their struggles in the last two league campaigns.

Having survived the drop on the final day of the season last year, Leeds have failed to improve much with three points separating them from the bottom of the table.

And along the way, Orta has found himself in the middle of controversy with sections of the Leeds fans where he has allowed his emotions to get the better of him.

Victor Orta and Jesse Marsch celebrate Leeds United's survival on the final day of the Premier League season.

Incidents at Elland Road have seen the Spaniard hit out at the home fans with incidents seeing him shush sections of the home crowd.

In relation to his actual job, the director of football has certainly had his hits and misses since arriving in Yorkshire with the likes of Raphinha proving his best buy.

But there have definitely been some poor additions under his tenure with the likes of the Jean-Kevin Augustin debacle coming under Orta's time at Elland Road.

It has been a difficult last two seasons for Leeds and Orta's managerial decisions may have played into that with the appointment of Jesse Marsch clearly not working out.

But it will be interesting to see whether the potential takeover from 49ers Enterprises could see Orta leave sooner rather than later if it does go ahead over the summer.

Arsenal’s £115k-p/w Dud Was Their ‘Weak’ Link vs Liverpool

Arsenal let slip their two-goal lead yesterday, but still walked away from Anfield with a more than respectable 2-2 draw against a struggling Liverpool side.

Although Jurgen Klopp’s men might not have been in the most glittering of form, having won just two of their last eight games in all competitions, at their infamous home stadium they remain a tough task for any side.

Especially for the Gunners, who historically have struggled to topple the Reds in Merseyside; their last win in the league came in 2012.

There were plenty of impressive performers on the day, who stood up to arguably one of their toughest tests as they enter the run-in. However, such was the bear pit environment crafted by the hosts, some also wilted.

Surprisingly, one such figure who disappointed was Martin Odegaard.

Their Norwegian captain has been ever-dependable all campaign, boasting ten goals and eight assists on the way to leading the pack in the Premier League.

However, it was a day to forget for the 24-year-old, who underwhelmed before his eventual substitution.

How did Martin Odegaard play vs Liverpool?

Whilst Rob Holding might steal the headlines for true poor performers, having been handed the worst Sofascore rating of any of Arsenal’s starting side and giving away a penalty, he does not demand the same lofty standards as his midfield teammate.

The English defender is merely standing in for the injured William Saliba, and everyone clearly knows that; likely even the 27-year-old himself.

Therefore, the occasional poor display against a tough side like Liverpool can be somewhat excused, almost expected.

Odegaard, however, has commanded such a spectacle surrounding each display, that when he underperforms it becomes a far greater story.

martin-odegaard-arsenal-liverpool-performance

From his 80 minutes on the field, the maestro could only muster 40 touches, completing 24 passes. He would subsequently lose possession ten times, and the only cross attempted would miss the mark, compounding an abysmal creative performance (via Sofascore).

Odegaard did play a role in advancing the ball forward for Gabriel Martinelli's opener, but that was as good as it got for the Norwegian, with journalist Sergio Santana even taking to Twitter to outline the “weak performance” posted by the 5 foot 10 wizard.

Often the former Real Madrid prodigy would make up for any attacking shortcomings with an unparalleled work rate. That also seemed missing in yesterday’s clash, as the £115k-per-week magician would record just one tackle as his sole defensive interaction. He would lose the other four duels competed in as per Sofascore.

Offensively inept and defensively work-shy, it was certainly an afternoon to forget for the usually reliable midfielder.

Odegaard has been instrumental in the current success of his outfit, but he will quickly want to dispel yesterday’s showing in order to return to the form that has led to such widespread praise.

Tottenham: Spurs Set For Talks With "Underrated" Manager

Tottenham Hotspur are set to make contact with former Spain boss Luis Enrique as they step up their manager search, according to journalist Matt Law.

What's the latest on Enrique to Spurs?

The 52-year-old has been on the radar of Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy ever since they parted company with former manager Antonio Conte last month. Enrique stands out as one of the more prestigious names to have been linked with a move to north London, alongside the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Julian Nagelsmann and even Zinedine Zidane.

There have even been reports of the tactician already travelling to west London for negotiations with rivals Chelsea, but the Spaniard is also thought to be open to discussions with Spurs.

Enrique was also thought to be the number one choice of Fabio Paratici around a month ago with some sources from other outlets suggesting he is still very much in Tottenham's thinking.

Spain's former boss Luis Enrique.

Now, according to reliable journalist Law, writing for The Telegraph, there has been some news in the last 48 hours on Tottenham's potential move for Enrique. Sharing news from his own sources, the reporter claims that Spurs are planning to make contact with the coach as the club begin to push harder in their quest to seal Conte's eventual successor.

It is claimed they're prepared for a battle with Chelsea over appointing Enrique and Spurs could open talks with him as early as this week. While there is no suggestion at this stage that he is Tottenham's top target, or if he will even be offered the job, it is clear that Enrique is high on Levy's shortlist.

What could Enrique bring to Spurs?

Barring an illustrious CV, in which he boasts multiple league titles and a Champions League winner's medal with Barcelona, Enrique also encourages an attack-minded, possession based philosophy. The 4-3-3 attacking manager has also been called 'seriously underrated' by members of the media who hold him in very high esteem.

Enrique's status as a free agent is yet another attractive incentive for Levy to make a move with no club standing in the way of a possible appointment. Commenting on his previous links to Arsenal, Man City boss Pep Guardiola heavily endorsed Enrique, stating:

“He’s a top, excellent, amazing manager. He can train wherever he wants and Arsenal is one of the biggest clubs in the world.”

Spurs, if they opt to take their talks further with a formal offer, could land quite the coach.

Reporter Shares Radrizzani And 49ers Leeds Update

Reporter Rory Smith has shared an update on Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani and possible future new owners The 49ers Enterprises.

What’s the latest Leeds news on Radrizzani and the 49ers?

The 49ers have the option to take full control in Yorkshire from Radrizzani over the coming months, with a deal around £420m in place providing the club remain in the Premier League.

However, Leeds are in another battle to avoid relegation, and a drop back to the Championship could see the 49ers pay the Italian around £150m instead.

It looks as if the relationship between the two is becoming strained, though, especially after Jack Harrison nearly left the club for Leicester City during the January transfer window. The winger headed down to Leicester and even started a medical before Leeds pulled the plug, and Smith has shared more information on how that deal unfolded.

Smith, chief football correspondent for The New York Times, was talking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club regarding Radrizzani and the 49ers and their “exacerbated” relationship. Relayed by Leeds United News, Smith said the two clashed when it came to Harrison's proposed move to Leicester.

“[Leeds] are worn down and that has been exacerbated due to the relationship between Radrizzani and the 49ers. The best example of that is Jack Harrison, who almost joined Leicester on the last day of the window.

“Radrizzani was happy for that deal to go through but as I understand it, the 49ers said no, you’re not doing that, we need him to stay in the Premier League. They are not working smoothly.”

All change at Leeds this summer?

Whatever division Leeds find themselves in over the coming months, it does feel as if there could be plenty of change in Yorkshire off the pitch. The 49ers are seemingly in for the long haul when it comes to taking charge of the Whites, so you’d imagine that a takeover will go through at some point this summer.

They could make a number of immediate changes, with supporters growing frustrated with sporting director Victor Orta and voicing their anger at the Spaniard last weekend.

Meanwhile, a new long-term manager could also be required at Elland Road, with the club already having new options in mind to come in and replace Javi Gracia over the coming months.

The 49ers and Radrizzani will both be hoping that Gracia can guide Leeds to safety, though, but Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City has seemingly made this weekend’s trip to Bournemouth must win.
