Lampard set for second interview at Everton

Everton have already interviewed Vitor Pereira and Fabio Cannavaro, but have still not announced the next manager to lead the Toffees into their last few months of the season, with a fresh twist emerging on the manager search.

What’s the word?

Reliable journalists, Chris Bascombe and John Percy have put together a report in The Telegraph to confirm that Frank Lampard will have a second interview on Thursday afternoon.

According to the report, the ex-Chelsea boss remains in serious consideration for landing the role at Goodison Park, despite interviewing and refusing to officially rule out Pereira from the role after his shocking Sky Sports News interview on Wednesday afternoon.

Duncan Ferguson has been appointed as interim manager at the club until Farhad Moshiri and the Everton board have made a decision on who will take over the challenge at the club for the rest of the season.

Fans will be buzzing

Everton fans have made it very clear who they want as manager, storming Goodison Park on Wednesday night to protest against the owners and their potential appointment of Pereira, with fans spray painting a message on the walls of the stadium saying ‘Pereira out, Lampard in’ and supporters have been vocal on social media too.

One fan tweeted: “Today is the day to announce Lampard to lift the fanbase. Plus it’s time to finally say goodbye to the Vitor once and for all #Everton.”

Lampard has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in January 2021, and although offering less experience than some of the candidates, his work at Derby County by getting them to the playoff final and knocking Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup can’t go unrecognised.

That’s along with his commitment to developing young talent like Mason Mount, who was given his Premier League debut by Lampard, and went on to win the Champions League with the club last summer.

This could be a real opportunity for Moshiri to make amends with the fans and employ the manager that the fanbase clearly wants to see at the club.. However, it will be interesting to see what direction the Everton board do decide to go in over the next few days.

Celtic: Hoops tracking Sinclair Armstrong

Celtic are thought to be interested in young Irish forward Sinclair Armstrong, according to Goal.

The Lowdown: Armstrong links

Armstrong is 18 years of age and is an out-and-out centre-forward currently on the books with QPR in the English Championship.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He spent part of the current campaign on loan at National League side Torquay United, scoring twice in eight appearances, with Gulls manager Gary Johnson describing him as ‘quick’.

The Hoops were linked with a move for the teenager when Neil Lennon was still in charge last year, and it appears that he is still of interest to Parkhead chiefs.

The Latest: Hoops name-checked

Goal name-checked Celtic with an interest in Armstrong in their live transfer blog (17/01, 10:02).

They suggested that the Hoops have been tracking the forward for a long period of time, with the likes of Brentford, Southampton and Hoffenheim also keen.

However, Manchester City are thought to be leading the race for his services, with the Premier League champions keen to loan him out to one of their City Football Group clubs for a few years.

The Verdict: Another Irish addition?

Ange Postecoglou has already signed three Irish players in James McCarthy, Liam Scales and Johnny Kenny.

Young forward Kenny was the most recent of the three to move to Celtic Park, and you’d expect that Armstrong is also viewed as a future star by Celtic scouts.

He is clearly held in high esteem with a hugely successful club in Man City extremely keen on him, so if the Hoops could somehow win the race for his services, it could be an excellent piece of business in the long run.

Manohar recuses himself from hearing against Modi

BCCI president Shashank Manohar has recused himself from the three-man disciplinary committee which will consider the case against suspended IPL commissioner Lalit Modi

Cricinfo staff19-Jun-2010BCCI president Shashank Manohar has recused himself from the three-man disciplinary committee which will consider the case against suspended IPL commissioner Lalit Modi. A replacement for Manohar will be chosen at a special general meeting (SGM) the board has convened on July 3 in Mumbai to discuss Modi’s replies to the three show-case notices sent to him.According to , the SGM was convened by BCCI secretary N Srinivasan on Manohar’s instructions. Modi has repeatedly accused Manohar and Srinivasan of harbouring personal grudges against him, and insisted neither of them should be involved in deciding his case. The reconstituted disciplinary committee will hear the case and then pass its recommendation to the general body of the BCCI, which will vote on the recommendation. The other two members of the committee are board vice-presidents Arun Jaitley and Chirayu Amin, who is also the interim chairman of the IPL.The affiliated members of the board have been sent copies of all the documents in the case, including the three-show cause notices, Modi’s replies and Manohar’s letter recusing himself from the committee.Under the board’s Memorandum of Rules and Regulations, a three-fourth majority of the general body present and voting is needed to pass a resolution. If the general body votes to expel Modi, he will be ineligible to hold any position or office in the board, or in any of its members or associate members, for a minimum of three years. Following the three-year period, an expelled member may be reinstated by the same three-fourth majority present and voting.

Rangnick could make star signing for MUFC

Manchester United are rumoured to want to sign a number of midfielders during this month, as the side continues to underperform in the Premier League.

There is pressure on Ralf Rangnick to identify the right individuals and there is now a fresh link to one of the most sought after midfielders in world football right now.

What’s the word?

The Athletic has reported that John Murtough has identified Jude Bellingham as top of the list for Man United’s transfer targets.

However, the report claims that the Bundesliga star won’t be targeted to join Old Trafford until the summer, along with Declan Rice, who has also been heavily linked with a move to the club over the next few months.

Bellingham is a popular player, who has been linked to a number of clubs including Red Devils rivals Liverpool, so United will have to make an attractive offer for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder at the end of the season.

Back in October, it was reported that the German outfit had slapped a whopping £101m asking price on the midfielder.

Scott McTominay upgrade

Securing the signature of the £49k-per-week dynamo would surely be an upgrade to their current midfield, and he would likely compete for Scott McTominay’s spot in the team.

The Manchester United midfielder has been the subject of criticism on a number of occasions when the side’s underwhelming form reaches its peak, with his partnership with Fred coming under fire often, will the pair labelled ‘McFred.’

Roy Keane said earlier this season: “Look at the performance of the two midfielders. McTominay is a good, honest player. And they’ve got Fred. As long as those two players are in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning any big trophies.

“I can’t believe how short Manchester United are.”

When you compare Bellingham and McTominay this season alone for their clubs in their respective leagues, the 18 year old, who was hailed “scary” by Manchester United legend, Keane, has shown considerable more.

He scored more goals (3 vs 1), made more ball recoveries, attempted and completed more passes, been successful in more take-ons and even from a defensive perspective has won 42 more ground duels in the same number of appearances as his Man United counterpart, McTominay, according to Squawka.

From this comparison alone, it is clear why the board at the 20 league title winning club are eager to sign the youngster, however they will likely need to put themselves in a much more attractive position in the league by securing Champions League football to ensure they can beat their Premier League competitors for his signature.

Romano makes Liverpool transfer claim

Liverpool will sign a new forward in the January transfer window if the right opportunity comes along, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Reds short in attack

The Reds didn’t sign an attacking player during the summer, with Jurgen Klopp seemingly content with the options at his disposal.

While that hasn’t been an issue yet this season, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are on the verge of departing for the Africa Cup of Nations, at which point Liverpool’s squad depth will be tested.

It remains to be seen if January reinforcements will come in but Romano certainly believes that it shouldn’t be ruled out.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

The Latest: Romano makes transfer claim

Speaking to Anfield Watch, the journalist claimed that a new signing could be made, but only if Liverpool believe it would be a long-term option. He outlined:

“Liverpool will only go into it if they have an opportunity that is also for the future.

“So they don’t want to sign a player just for six months or 3/4 games with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane leaving the club for the African Cup.

“They will jump into it if they find an opportunity like Diogo Jota – a player with a good price with no crazy price tag, and with good skills that match Jurgen Klopp’s ideas.

“So if they are able to find this kind of opportunity, they will do it. Liverpool are looking in the transfer market for that kind of player, a winger – this is the priority.

“They like players like Raphinha from Leeds or Danjuma from Villarreal. But it’s very complicated to sign them in January.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-15/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Verdict: No need to panic

While Salah and Mane will clearly be big losses given that they have contributed 31 goals between them already this term, their absences shouldn’t be too lengthy and Liverpool should still be able get by with the likes of Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino (18 goals between them in 2021/22).

For that reason, it seems more likely that a summer addition will be made, at which point fresh blood will be required considering that Salah, Mane and Firmino will all be 30 come the start of next season.

That being said, should a prime candidate become available this month, bringing him in certainly wouldn’t do any harm, helping to fill the short-term void left by Liverpool’s departing superstars.

Simmons slams 'complacent' Ireland

Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, has accused his side of ‘complacency’ after they slumped to defeat against Afghanistan in the World Twenty20 warm-up game

Cricinfo staff29-Apr-2010Phil Simmons, the Ireland coach, has accused his side of ‘complacency’ after they slumped to defeat against Afghanistan in the World Twenty20 warm-up game on Wednesday.Ireland lost 3-0 to West Indies XI earlier this month and were also defeated by New Zealand on Tuesday. It’s a sequence of results that does not bode well for a side that has a proud record in global tournaments recently and Simmons could not hide his disappointment after a lacklustre performance that saw Ireland slip to 32 for 5 at one point.”I can’t express my thoughts,” he said. “We didn’t start the game well. We can’t have five wickets down for 30 runs in eight or nine overs and expect to be competitive in a game. It’s a case of complacency and bad batting as a whole. We’ve just got to make sure that we get rid of that complacency.”Ireland’s batting woes have hampered the side since arriving in the Caribbean. They have passed 150 only once in the five Twenty20 matches they have played but Simmons insists his team can bounce back.”We lost four going into the World Twenty20 in England last year and we lost two coming into the [50-over] World Cup here three years ago so that does nothing for us,” he said.”The thing about it is that before yesterday and today we had done everything that we wanted to do leading up to the competition. Two days doesn’t change anything. I think it’s a case of us making sure that between Thursday and Friday morning that mentally we get prepared for what it the biggest game since we’ve been on this tour.”Ireland play their opening match on Friday against Simmons’ native West Indies at Guyana. “We’ve had two bad days but two bad days don’t make a summer, as they say. I think we still have the desire to come on Friday and perform.”

Onions to travel to Abu Dhabi with Durham

Graham Onions will be travelling with Durham when the county champions play MCC in a floodlit four-day game in Abu Dhabi

Cricinfo staff16-Mar-2010Graham Onions, who was forced to pull out of England’s Test series against Bangladesh with a back injury, will be travelling with Durham when the county champions play MCC in a floodlit four-day game in Abu Dhabi in the opening fixture of the English season at the end of the monthOnions is not expected to play in the match, however, and is making the trip as the first step in his recuperation. It is expected he will be fully fit by the time Durham take on Essex on April 15.”His injury doesn’t seem too bad, so we hope he will have a quick recuperation,” Durham coach Geoff Cook told . “England have asked us to take him to Abu Dhabi to help with his rehabilitation. We will be aiming to have him ready for the first county match against Essex.”Mark Davies, the fast-medium seamer who was called up from the England Performance Squad to the Test squad in South Africa as cover for James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom, will also be going to Abu Dhabi to aid his rehabilitation after he had an operation to remove some floating bone from his ankle earlier this month. In a break from the traditional season opener at Lord’s, MCC decided to transfer the fixture to Abu Dhabi in order to ensure it would not be blighted by poor weather, and to trial the use of the pink ball under floodlights – with a view to paving the way for use of the innovation in Test cricket.”Some counties are forsaking pre-season tours, and we would probably have been in that boat were it not for the MCC meeting most of our costs,” added Cook. “Some people seem to think we have loads of money because we are champions, but for all the counties at the moment making ends meet is quite tricky.”

Leeds’ interest in Lanzini ‘rebuffed’

West Ham have ‘rebuffed’ Leeds United’s interest in Manuel Lanzini, according to a fresh report that has emerged.

The Lowdown: Lanzini struggles for playing time

The Hammers have enjoyed an impressive season to date but the 28-year-old has failed to force his way into David Moyes’ plans on a regular basis.

Lanzini has only started three Premier League matches so far in 2021/22, scoring twice and registering one assist in that time.

With Leeds looking for potential January reinforcements, it seems as though Leeds are eyeing up a move for the Argentine next month, who scored the Irons’ goal of the season last term with a stunning late equaliser against Tottenham.

[freshpress-quiz id=“383507″]

The Latest: Leeds offer rejected

According to TEAMtalk, West Ham have turned down ‘a number of enquiries’ for Lanzini, with the Whites one of the clubs mentioned.

Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Everton and Southampton are all seen as possible suitors, too, with the midfielder’s current Hammers deal expiring in the summer of 2023, meaning they are running out of time to make a significant transfer fee on a sale.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-29/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Strong option for Whites

Lanzini may not be a vital player for West Ham currently but he is someone who could make a big difference at Leeds, adding guile in the middle of the park.

The five-cap Argentina international has chipped in with 25 goals and assists apiece in 177 Hammers appearances, and with the Whites struggling for goals, he can add a sprinkling of magic in the final third.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have only scored 18 goals in as many league games this season, highlighting the need for some creative magic in the middle of the park, and Lanzini can be that man, having been hailed as ‘wonderful’ by Darren Bent in the past.

Kent decide against Clark

Stuart Clark will no longer be coming to Kent as their overseas player for the first half of the 2010 season

Cricinfo staff16-Mar-2010Stuart Clark will no longer be coming to Kent as their overseas player for the first half of the 2010 season. Clark, 34, has recently returned to Australian domestic cricket after missing nearly three months with a back injury, and the county decided against taking a chance on his fitness. The county has released a statement indicating that Clark “is not where the club wants him to be fitness-wise so the decision has been reached that it is not worth the risk, on either part, in proceeding with the contract.””I’m very disappointed that Stuart is not coming to Kent because he offers so much – both on and off the field,” said Paul Farbrace, Kent’s team director. “I would like to thank him for his honesty throughout as it made the decision that much easier.”Clark has represented Australia 24 times in Test matches, taking 94 wickets at a miserly 23.86, but was discarded after Australia’s unsuccessful Ashes campaign last year. While conceding that his international career is in all likelihood over, he had identified a county stint as a new career objective and has also captained his state side – the New South Wales Blues – in the absence of regular skipper Simon Katich.”We are continuing to work on other options, as we have been for the last couple of months,” added Farbrace. “We had someone lined up, as a possible alternative, but he has just been named by his country in their World Twenty20 squad. We are looking for someone that will offer value for money, and is the right type of individual to bring into our dressing room, but won’t sign someone for the sake of it.”
