Sheffield Wednesday: Fans want Jacob Murphy back at the club for next season

The Championship season ended last night and Sheffield Wednesday lost their final game 2-1 to Middlesbrough. There hasn’t been a lot for the Hillsborough faithful to cheer about in 2020 as they only picked up four victories since 22 December.

They finished in 16th, which is four positions lower than last year. Plus, with the season ending, it also means that on-loan players are returning to their parent clubs, and many fans would like to see the Owls attempt to sign Jacob Murphy permanently for next term.

The winger, who was signed on loan from Premier League side Newcastle, played 33 times in the Championship for the Owls, scoring nine goals and picking up four assists, per Transfermarkt.

This ranks him as the second highest scorer at the club in 2019/20, per WhoScored, whilst he had the joint-third most assists and it emphasises why a lot of supporters would like to see him return next season.

He will for sure be a player that they either need to bring back or try to replace as he provided a lot of attacking threat for Wednesday.

Here is what these Owls fans said following the post:

Wednesday fans, what are your thoughts on Murphy? Comment below with your views!

Rangers fans drool over confirmation of Calvin Bassey signing

After completing a permanent move for Ianis Hagi recently, Rangers are back at it again in the transfer market with the confirmation that they have signed Calvin Bassey on a pre-contract.

The former Leicester City starlet has inked a four-year deal with the Gers, and the Scottish side will only have to pay training compensation to their Premier League counterparts.

Can you name every one of the Rangers’ top goalscorers from the past 15 seasons? It’s a tricky one…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

And speaking after the deal was announced, Steven Gerrard waxed lyrical about his side’s latest recruit. He said: “There was a lot of clubs interested in Calvin and for us it’s pleasing to secure the services of another young talent.

“He’s a strong and dynamic athlete who is very much the modern day full back. He will develop further and we are excited to have made another strong addition to our group.”

After hearing about Bassey’s arrival, Rangers fans took to Twitter to voice their delight at the news.

A few fans paid special tribute to the club’s sporting director, Ross Wilson, for getting such a smart deal over the line, with one supporter insisting that with him leading the transfer front for the Gers, there are “very exciting times” ahead.

One Rangers fan hailed the deal for two particular reasons, praising the fact that the club are continuing to get their business done early, and also for bringing in cover for first-choice left-back Borna Barisic.

So it’s been a fairly impressive couple of weeks for Rangers.

Bringing in Hagi on a permanent deal was one major win considering his performances at Ibrox – the Romanian had netted three goals in 12 games – and now, they can revel in Bassey’s signing.

At just 20-years-old, he could potentially be an option for the present and the future under Gerrard.

Newcastle must spend big to help Allan Saint-Maximin

Just what must Allan Saint-Maximin be thinking as he watches his Newcastle teammates struggle to match his level?

The Frenchman has been an absolute revelation for the Magpies ever since he arrived from Nice last summer, as Geordies are eagerly awaiting being able to visit SeatPick.com and get tickets at SJP once again, with the Frenchman scoring four times and providing seven assists across all competitions.

But too often, Saint-Maximin has just been tasked with doing far too much for Steve Bruce’s side, and it has perhaps never been clearer than his display against Tottenham in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The 23-year-old single-handedly tried to drag his team on, constantly demanding the ball wherever he was on the pitch, and looking to create something either for himself or his teammates.

As per Sofascore, his 8.4 match rating was only bettered by Tottenham star Harry Kane, and that is despite not scoring or providing an assist himself.

All of his work went unrewarded, and the winger himself must surely have been feeling frustrated that the rest of his team couldn’t quite match his standards.

Saint-Maximin has proven himself to be a prolific dribbler this season in the top-flight – he currently ranks second behind Adama Traore with 4.8 dribbles per game – but on Wednesday, he took that to a completely another level.

He completed a whopping 11 out of the 12 dribbles he attempted, and despite providing three key passes for his teammates, and firing off six shots on goal himself, couldn’t really find a way past Hugo Lloris.

It felt like a game of Spurs vs Saint-Maximin and the rest. And that’s never a good sign.

As much as he huffed and puffed – he won a ridiculous 16 total duels out of the 22 that he contested – his teammates couldn’t share some of the workload.

And that’s exactly why the Saudi consortium interested in taking over at St James’ Park, must splash the cash in the summer transfer window if everything gets confirmed.

Already there has been talk of rival clubs showing a liking towards Saint-Maxmin, so it’s absolutely imperative the Magpies start bringing in quality players to take the pressure off the Frenchman’s shoulders and give him teammates who can match his quality and ambition.

If not, then more Bruce will just have to see more of the same of his winger trying to win games on his own, and seeing things fall apart around him.

Spurs fans discuss their interest in Marash Kumbulla

Having conceded 40 goals in the Premier League this season – the joint-most of anyone in the top ten – it’s no surprise to hear Tottenham being interested in making some defensive reinforcements this summer.

The latest player to be linked with a switch to north London? Hellas Verona’s Marash Kumbulla.

According to Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Spurs have earmarked the centre-back as a potential option to replace Belgium international Jan Vertonghen, who reports claim is set to leave on a free transfer when his contract comes to an end.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

The report adds that Spurs could face intense competition from Premier League rivals Everton, and Serie A giants Inter.

After hearing about the links to the 20-year-old, Spurs fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their rumoured transfer target.

One Spurs fan in particular however, raised some concerns about potentially signing Kumbulla, wondering whether he could be another Vlad Chiriches.

At just 20-years-old, Kumbulla could well be the future of Spurs’ defence.

If Vertonghen does indeed leave north London this summer, then going after someone who is considerably younger may be the way to go, particularly with the financial impact of the current situation set to take effect for the next couple of seasons at least.

Kumbulla may be the answer for Spurs.

Meanwhile, Spurs fans react to this PL star’s admission.

Son Heung Min reveals Tottenham heartache while on Asian Cup duty

Tottenham Hotspur were forced to cope without Son Heung-min for a short time in January when he joined up with the South Korea squad at the Asian Cup, but he made his return to Premier League football last night and got himself on the score sheet in the process.

With Spurs edging towards another morale-sapping defeat on Wednesday night, Son added his 9th Premier League strike of the season to draw his side level in the 80th minute, setting the stage for Fernando Llorente to redeem himself for a glaring miss by scoring a late winner.

Son was back in action after missing key fixtures against Fulham and cup defeats against Chelsea and Crystal Palace, a set of results which left him in a world of pain while on international duty.

Indeed, Son has opened up about his brief stint on international duty and revealed his heartache after watching Spurs crash out of two cup competitions (via Sky Sports).

“Of course, when I saw the Fulham game, we scored last minute and of course I was happy but also Dele was injured and it hurt,” he said. “When you go away, your team go out of a semi-final the cup game, and the FA Cup, it just hurt. It hurt like you can’t even imagine.

“Football is about… in three days or one week you can make it better. That was the main thing.

“I followed it when I was in the Asian Games in Indonesia and I followed it this time as well. I must follow, if I don’t follow then I can’t sleep!”

Son has established himself as an incredibly popular figure at Spurs since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, and his latest admission is only likely to cement his status amongst the supporters.

It’s rare to see a player speak with such transparency and emotion about their despair when things aren’t going well. The fact Son was forced to watch Spurs’ mini demise from afar and was unable to aid the team effort clearly hurt the electric attacker, but his passion and commitment to the cause seems symptomatic of the ethos Pochettino has installed at the club.

Son wasted no time in finding his feet after his second international hiatus of the season and his emotional investment to Spurs’ ambitions will ensure he has a pivotal role to play in any future success.

As good as Jude Bellingham & Jamal Musiala? How lessons from Lionel Messi & Neymar made PSG-owned Xavi Simons a Golden Boy

Xavi Simons is as good as Jude Bellingham and Jamal Masiala, says Bolo Zenden, with the Dutch starlet taking important lessons from Lionel Messi.

Playmaker caught the eye at BarcelonaBack at PSG for second spellKey part of the Netherlands' future plansWHAT HAS HAPPENED?

Simons is still just 20 years of age, but he has been operating under the brightest of spotlights since first catching the eye in Barcelona’s academy system. Living up to big expectations was always going to be difficult, but the classy playmaker starred during a loan spell at PSV last season – hitting 22 goals – and finds himself back on the books of Paris Saint-Germain following a 12-month soiree in his native Netherlands.

AdvertisementGettySTAR OF PRESENT & FUTURE

Simons is seeing his stock soar once more, as full potential is unlocked, with former PSV star Zenden – speaking in association with – telling GOAL of how good the exciting youngster can become: “He came relatively unknown to PSV. What I mean by that is that everybody knew about him – he played for Holland U18s, played at the Barca academy and at Paris Saint-Germain – but he didn’t feature much in first-team football and that is what I mean about him being relatively unknown. When he came to PSV, we maybe didn’t know what to expect from him and he still had to prove himself at first level football."

LEGENDS FOR TEACHERS

Zenden went on to say of Simons’ impact in Eindhoven, with it clear that the youngster had benefited from working alongside some modern day greats in Paris: “As soon as he came in, he was very positive, he had a good attitude, he was working hard and you could see that he had been at these bigger teams and he didn’t have his eyes in his pockets – he really learned from the big players like [Kylian] Mbappe, Messi, Neymar.

"He had a really good professionalism about him. He knew exactly what he wanted, where he wanted to go, and he became sort of a leader on the pitch for the squad. He was definitely one of the favourites with the fans with his way of playing, scoring goals and being important with assists. But it was also his joy of playing football. He was, don’t get me wrong on this, like a puppy being around and just being happy in what he was doing – it was a joy to watch. You hope that he is never going to lose that aura that he has got.”

GettyWHY DID PSG RETURN HAPPEN?

PSV were understandably keen to retain Simons’ services after handing him a long-term contract, but a €6 million (£5m/$6m) release clause left them vulnerable – especially as Simons’ profile was eclipsing their own. Zenden added: “He has a massive following on Instagram – I think there was talk that he had more followers than PSV itself! He is a really popular figure. We wanted him to stay at PSV, but there was this clause in his contract and we knew it was never going to happen. At the same time, you have to be realistic and say it is due to the clause that it was possible for PSV to get him in.

"Then, he has gone to Leipzig and is doing the same again. He scored a great goal in midweek in the Champions League to help his team and is doing well in the Bundesliga as well. It’s great to see that a youngster like that is performing the way he does. There was talk in the Netherlands that the national team should build the team around him, but Koeman said that was probably a little bit too soon, too early to do so. But it says it all that he is doing a great job and it is a pleasure to watch. We hope we can enjoy him even more.”

How Chelsea should line up for the 2023-24 season: Moises Caicedo would be a transformative presence for the Blues

Chelsea are finally closing in on the midfielder despite Liverpool's best efforts – and it's just as well, because he will be intrinsic to their style

A new era in Chelsea's storied history gets underway in earnest as the 2023-24 season begins. The squad and indeed the coaching staff are unrecognisable from the group that ended 2022-23 at Stamford Bridge, with the club evidently desperate to consign a nightmare campaign to the history books.

Chelsea's unprecedented summer clear-out and a smattering of new arrivals means new head coach Mauricio Pochettino inherits a rejuvenated – if incomplete – Blues squad, with muted anticipation for a more successful season ahead. Indeed, the only way is surely up.

But how will Argentine tactician set up his side in what will be a watershed period in the Blues' modern history? GOAL runs through what should be his go-to line-up below…

GettyGK: Kepa Arrizabalaga

Pochettino has a sudden selection headache following the £25 million ($32m) arrival of Robert Sanchez from Brighton, but – for the time being, at least – it makes sense to stick with Kepa Arrizabalaga.

There's no guarantee he will be the long-term first choice, especially amid links with Bayern Munich, but Kepa offers a modicum of continuity amid the unprecedented upheaval. Aside from a few lapses, Kepa was much improved last season, with a 73% save percentage in the league and a post-shot xG minus goals allowed of +5, which meant he ranked third among Premier League goalkeepers in the most reliable metric for measuring shot-stopping ability.

Sanchez, on the other hand, lost his place at Brighton and slipped to third in the pecking order.

Pochettino has already suggested Kepa is his No.1 for the moment: "They know they are going to fight for the No.1. At the moment, Kepa is a little bit ahead. With time, we will see if Robert is there and can challenge Kepa."

AdvertisementGettyRB: Reece James

A no-brainer on the right side of defence. Reece James is Chelsea's new club captain and, barring any further fitness issues on the horizon, he is a guaranteed starter.

Pochettino does prefer a 4-2-3-1 shape and there is an argument that James is not at his best in a flat back-four given his potency as an attacking wing-back. New signing Malo Gusto will also provide him with stiff competition and quality cover.

However, James is arguably the Blues' best player, and the added responsibility of the captaincy means he should be the first name on the team sheet.

GettyCB: Thiago Silva

The swansong begins. In what will likely be his final season at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will once again rely heavily upon the defensive nous and immeasurable experience of Thiago Silva.

Unsurprisingly, the 38-year-old phenomenon remained one of the club's most consistent performers throughout a turbulent 2022-23 campaign, and as a serial winner he will be determined to right the wrongs of last season on the pitch before bidding an emotional farewell to the Blues.

Indeed, he will also be crucial in being an on-field mentor for his young centre-back partner…

Getty ImagesCB: Levi Colwill

Chelsea clung on to their latest outstanding academy graduate for dear life and finally managed to tie him down to a new long-term contract. Now it's time to back him.

He initially had to fight for his place in the team, but Levi Colwill eventually made his Premier League breakthrough on loan at Brighton in 2022-23 and he has proven that he is ready for the top level.

Given they have no European football to contend with and following the serious knee injury to Wesley Fofana, Pochettino should throw Colwill in at the deep end at left centre-back and build for the future. He has all the attributes to become a club legend.

'Erling Haaland eats like a bear!' – Cow hearts, 'magic potion' milk and the diet and lifestyle secrets fuelling Man City's goal machine

As the Norwegian looks to fire City to Champions League glory against Inter, GOAL takes a look at his quest for physical perfection

Hundreds of cars line the car park at Manchester City's training ground and one sticks out in particular – a Rolls Royce. It belongs to Erling Haaland. There is nothing unusual about top footballers owning luxury cars, but Haaland's motor is different to most – according to legend, it contains a cooking stove.

Even when he is on the move, Haaland wants to be able to eat top-quality food. His love for cooking was plain to see when, during City's Premier League title celebrations last month at a high-end restaurant in the centre of Manchester, the striker, wearing silk pyjamas, went into the kitchen to grill his own steaks, leaving the chefs with their jaws on the floor.

Haaland has been described as a freak of nature, but while he is blessed with the ideal genetics – a footballer father and a heptathlete mother – his phenomenal physical condition is not down to chance.

From his diet to his sleep pattern through to his post-match massage routine, Haaland's daily regime is meticulously planned and a key reason why he has scored a stunning 52 goals this season in 52 games, firing City to the Premier League title, the FA Cup and the Champions League final.

Getty'He eats like a bear'

Haaland has experienced a huge growth spurt in recent years, fuelled by his insatiable eating habits. The striker says he consumes around 6,000 calories a day (adult men are supposed to consume around 2,500) and eating is a huge part of his life.

Norway team-mate Josh King said he had never seen anyone consume as much food as Haaland, remarking: "He just eats like a bear". And there is something animalistic about the striker's eating habits. While vegan diets have been become common among modern footballers, Haaland is an unashamed lover of meat.

That might have something to do with growing up in a rural community in Bryne, Norway, where he would help out his grandfather, a potato and pig farmer. But the type of meat he eats is unusual. As well as liking steak, Haaland eats cow's hearts and livers. Even Dwayne Johnson, better known as The Rock, expressed surprise when he learned of Haaland's diet.

The striker explained his eating habits in the documentary . "Eating quality food that is as local as possible is the most important," he said. "People say meat is bad for you, but which? The meat you get at McDonald's, or the local cow eating grass right there?"

AdvertisementGetty ImagesNo booze – but plenty of filtered water

Haaland also indulges in pasta, a former favourite dish of footballers but which has fallen out of fashion in recent times. His father, Alfie, cooks him lasagne the day before each home game, which helped him score back-to-back hat-tricks against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest. And he is a regular at Italian eateries in Manchester, with one restaurant opening specially for him so he can eat in private, away from the public glare.

While a fair few City players indulge in nightlife – Guardiola remarked that his side "drunk all the alcohol in Manchester" after winning the title – Haaland is not known for drinking much booze.

"He is the best professional I have ever seen" said Jack Grealish of the Norwegian. "His mindset is something you won't see again. He does everything. Recovers; in the gym; 10 hours of treatment a day; ice baths; diet. That's why he is what he is. But I swear, I couldn't be like that!

"We have a great friendship, but he will point at me after a game and say: 'Hey. Don't you go out tonight partying'. I just tell him to shut up and go and sit in his ice bath."

But Haaland still takes a big interest in what he drinks. He insists on drinking filtered water, while also drinking kale-infused milk, calling it his "magic potion".

Getty Taking sleep seriously

As well as taking his diet seriously, Haaland is passionate about getting a good night's sleep, calling it "perhaps the most important thing in life". Cristiano Ronaldo, for example, has taken a huge interest in sleep patterns, talking of the benefits of taking regular naps. Haaland is more traditional, preferring to get to sleep by 10.30pm and turning off his technological devices long before he climbs into bed. But he also uses modern technology to help him get the rest he needs.

He puts on orange, blue-light glasses before going to bed which hide natural light, and wears an Oura ring on his finger to measure the quality of his sleep and his heart rate.

GettyLate-night massages to stay injury-free

Sleep and diet are crucial to any elite player's performance, but injury can derail the most promising of seasons and even wreck a career. Haaland had a checkered injury history before arriving at City, missing 16 matches for Borussia Dortmund last season, mostly with muscle injuries.

But he and the club have worked hard to keep him fit and relatively injury-free. Guardiola has talked openly about the club's concerns about his injury history and credited the medical staff and physios for keeping him in shape.

Haaland has been unavailable for only three games this season, recovering quickly from each setback. The club asked sports therapist Mario Pafundi to accompany him on international duty with Norway to ensure he kept the same routine.

Haaland also takes his own initiative to stay injury-free. After the Champions League quarter-final first leg victory against Bayern Munich, he headed straight to the training ground – conveniently located opposite the road from the Etihad Stadium – for an hour-long massage.

Haaland, you bow to Rashford today! Manchester derby winners & losers as United show they're title-race ready

Manchester United came from a goal down to beat Man City 2-1 in the derby and move to within a point of Pep Guardiola's side in the table.

Are Manchester United now in the Premier League title race? That's the question that was floating around Old Trafford after the Red Devils came from behind to beat City 2-1 and cut the gap to the defending champions to just a point.

City had humiliated Erik ten Hag's side back in October when the teams met at the Etihad, but the Red Devils enjoyed a slice of revenge here and continued a fine run that means they have lost just once in 19 games since that 6-3 defeat.

Marcus Rashford, who else, was the star of the show once again for the Red Devils. The England international shrugged off an injury scare to inspire his team to a second-half comeback.

Substitute Jack Grealish had headed City into the lead, but United responded with two goals in four minutes late in the second half to snatch the win.

Bruno Fernandes equalised in controversial style, with Rashford clearly in an offside position, but the goal was allowed to stand and suddenly United were back in the game. Four minutes later, Rashford swept home Alejandro Garnacho's cross to cut the gap to leaders Arsenal to just six points.

Here's GOAL's winners and losers!

GettyWINNER: Marcus Rashford

The England international continued his prolific run of form by scoring his eighth goal in his last seven games to secure United a 2-1 win and three valuable points.

Rashford had been lively in the first half, twice going close to scoring, but gave the home fans a giant scare when he went to ground just before the half-time whistle after appearing to pick up an injury.

He managed to keep going, however, and ended up being key to their victory once again. Debate will rage about his contribution to Bruno Fernandes' equaliser, as he was clearly offside, but he made sure he didn't touch the ball and allowed the Portugal international to sweep home instead.

There were no doubts at all about Rashford's winner. The forward was alive to the threat created by Alejandro Garnacho and stuck out a leg to poke home his 16th goal of an increasingly stellar season.

AdvertisementGettyLOSER: Erling Haaland

City's summer signing ran riot the last time these two sides met at the Etihad back in October, netting three times and becoming the first player to score three successive Premier League home hat-tricks.

Yet it was a different story entirely at Old Trafford. Haaland barely had a kick, had to listen to Man Utd fans taunting him throughout the game, and has now gone three matches without a goal.

Haaland might have been licking his lips ahead of the game too, after seeing United boss Ten Hag start with left-back Luke Shaw alongside Raphael Varane in the heart of the backline.

Yet United managed to isolate the striker and, other than a blocked shot and a vague appeal for a penalty, he contributed very little during the 90 minutes.

GettyWINNER: Bruno Fernandes

Man City looked set to do the double over their local rivals after Grealish had opened the scoring but were pegged back when Bruno Fernandes equalised on 78 minutes with an assured finish.

City were furious about Rashford's contribution but could do nothing about Fernandes. The Portugal international whipped an excellent finish past Ederson to score another crucial goal and put United right back in the game.

The captain then ran straight to the linesman, who had his flag up, to remonstrate with the decision. Fernandes knew full well he was onside when he ran onto Casemiro's pass and the decision eventually stood.

He may not be providing the numbers from a couple of seasons ago just yet, but today was a huge moment as the 28-year-old looks to inspire an unlikely title challenge.

GettyLOSER: Man City's title hopes

Saturday's defeat means United moved to within a point of City in second place in the table and leaves Pep Guardiola's side still five points behind leaders Arsenal, and having played a game more than the Gunners.

It's not a fatal blow to City's hopes of retaining the title by any means but it will make their task that much harder. Arsenal will also know they can move eight points clear with a win over Tottenham on Sunday in the north London derby. Motivation indeed, not that it will be needed against Spurs.

City's quality and the strength in depth of Guardiola's squad means it would be foolish to write the defending champions off after 18 games. However, it does mean they really can't afford to drop too many more points between now and the end of the season if they are to finish top of the pile once again.
